Chancery suit*20 December 1804He was named in a chancery suit on 20 December 1804 at Accomack Co, VA. Complaining to the Justices of the Court, your oratrix & orator Susann West and John Roles West and infant by said Susanna West his next friend (guardian). That a certain Revil West late husband of your said oratrix and father of your orator, now dec'd, was in his lifetime & at his death possessed in his own right of the following slaves, to wit, Jo, Jim, Abram, Ben, Andrew, Letty, Vianna, Emanuel, Shadrack, Israel, Sam & old Israel, and being so possessed upon the 25 Dec 1802 departed this life intestate, leaving your oratrix his widow, and your orator John Roles West , also Maria Hall West & Revil West his children and no more, by reason whereof your oratrix is advised that the said slaves have descended to the said John, Maria & Revil equally to be divided, subject to the dower of your oratrix therein . Your orator & oratrix also represent that it would greatly condense to the interest of them as well as to the interest of the said Maria & Revil to have a division of said slaves made among them, at the same time laying off and setting apart the dower of your oratrix therein. But so it is may if please your worships that the said Maria and Revil being infants of tender years, nothing effectual and binding can be done in the premises without the aid of your worships. In tender consideration whereof and for as much as your oratrix, who is the guardian of said children, cannot rightfully assign dower to herself in said slaves, nor can any division of them be made without the interference of a court of chancery whose cognizance extends to all cases of the nature. To the end therefore that a division of said slaves may be made as aforesaid and the dower of your oratrix therein be assigned, may it please your worships to grant to oratrix & orator the commonwealth writ of spa to the said Maria & Revil to be directed commanding them &c. Signed: Wise for the complainants.
The answer of Maria Hall West and Revil West infants by Thomas Parker their guardian specially appointed to defend the suit brought against them by Susanna West & Jno. Roles West. These defts by their said guardian say that they admit it to be true that Revil West their father died at the time stated by the complainants possessed of the slaves also stated by them. They also admit that said Revil their father left the said Susanna the mother of these defts his widow & the said Jno. Roles West & these defts his children & no more, & that it would be to the advantage of all concerned to have a division of said slaves made & dower therein assigned as is prayed for by the complainants. They have no objection to the said assignment & division but being infants can give no consent or do any act obligatory or effectual made by the superintendence and directions of your worships, to ----- decree in this case they humbly submit it themselves. Signed: Thos Parker.
In obedience to an order of the Court of Accomack County to as directed , requiring us to assign the dower and to divide the slaves of the estate of Revil West dec'd, we have proceeded to do the same in the following manner, Viz. to the widow we have assigned as downer Joe, Emanuel, Shadrack, Letty, Lsam(?) and upon the division of the remaining slaves among the children, John Rowles West drew Jim and Vianna; and to pay to Mariah West the sum of one pound, thirteen shillings and four pence; Revel West drew Marsham and Ben, and to pay to Maria West the sum of six pounds, thirteen shillings and four pence; and Mariah West drew Andrew and your Isreal and is to receive from Jno. R. West the sum of one pound, thirteen shillings and four pence and from Revel West the sum of ten pounds, thirteen shillings and four pence. Old Isreal being and old man very chargeable and finding difficulty in justly assigning him to any one of the parties, in our considered at more comonant with the premises of justice and right that he should remain undivided and be supported during his life by all the parties agreeable to their respective interests, that is the widow Susannah West during her life and the less of said negro Isreal to pay one third of the expenses of keeping him and the remaining two-thirds of the expense be equally borne by Jno. R. West, Revel West & Mariah West. Given under our hands this 20 Dec 1804. Signed: William Gibb Sen, Jno. S. Ker & William Seymour.6

Will - Father's*28 May 1847Margaret was named in her father's will on 28 May 1847 at Accomack Co, VA. In his will Henry Bagwell gave to daughter Peggy Douglas Bagwell the whole of my estate, but this is not to effect the dower of my wife Catharine in my estate. If both daughter & wife die without issue, slaves to go free. Wife Catharine & friend Robert J. Poulson Extrs. Witt: James J. Ailworth & John B. Ailworth. Prob: James W. Custis, Edward P. Chancery suit*June 1850She was named in a chancery suit in June 1850 at Accomack Co, VA. Robert J. Poulson, guardian of Peggy Douglas Bagwell, plaintiff against Peggy Douglas Bagwell & others, defendants, in Chancery. On motion of the plaintiff by her counsel, John C. Hall is appointed guardian 'ad litem' to the defendant Peggy Douglas Bagwell, who there upon appeared by her said guardian and filed her answer to which the plaintiff replied generally. And the defendants John C. Hall and Catharine his wife appeared and filed their joint answer. Whereupon this cause came on to be heard by consent of the adult defendants by their counsel and of the infant defendant by her said guardian 'ad litem' upon the bill, the said answer, replication, exhibit and examinations of witnesses and was argued by counsel: On consideration whereof, the Court being of opinion that the interest of the infant defendant Peggy Douglass Bagwell manifestly requires the sale of her real estate in the plaintiff's bill described, and that by such sale the rights of others will not be violated, doth adjudge, order and decree, that Robert J. Poulson be and he hereby is authorized to make sale either at public auction or by private contract in such lots and parcels as he may deem best of the Tavern House & Lot in Drummond Town, adjoining the lands of Edmund R. Allen and others ___ also of the lot of land containing nine (9) acres, more or less, adjoining the lands of Thomas Lilliston and others and also a lot or parcel of wood-land, containing eighteen (18) acres, more or less, adjoining the lands of Henry Melson and others, in this county, whereof Henry Bagwell died seized and possessed, upon the following terms, that is to say ___ upon a credit of six, twelve and eighteen months from the 1st day of January 1851, in equal instalments, with interest thereon from the said day, __ That a lien be retained on the said premises, and that the purchaser or purchasers thereof execute separate bonds with satisfactory personal security for each instalment of the purchase money, __ That the purchaser or purchasers respectively bear the expense of writing and recording all necessary and proper deeds of conveyance and that the current year's rents be reserved and that the purchaser or purchasers, respectively, be entitled to the possession of the premises on the 2nd day of January next. __ And it is further ordered that the said Robert J. Poulson as to the sale of such of said lots or parcels of land as he may sell at auction, give at least twenty (20) days previous public notice of the time and place of such sale by advertisements posted at the front door of the Court House of this County and in the neighborhood of the premises and sale. And it is further ordered that the said John C. Hall and Catharine his wife be allowed one sixth (1/6) of the net proceeds of said sales in lieu of their right of dower in right of said Catharine in the said premises, upon their uniting in said sale and conveyances when made.4
Census w/mother*1850Margaret was listed with her mother in the census of in 1850 at St. George Parish, Acc Co, VA. She was shown as Peggy D. Bagwell, age 4 in HH#236 headed by Jno. C. Hall, a 55 year old constable with real estate valued at $45,000. Also listed was Catharine Hall, age 30, who was evidently her mother..1
Land deed named in*30 January 1852She was named in a deed on 30 January 1852 at Accomack Co, VA. Robert J. Poulson, guardian of Peggy Douglas Bagwell, sold woodlands Peggy was devised by her father, lately dec'd, containing 18 acres near the Court House, adjacent to Henry Melson & others, on 20 Sep 1850 to James T. Melson, James H. Coleburn and William H. Parker for $48.51 per acre for a total of $873.18. The deed spelled out in detail which buyer got what acreage and described each part in detail but did not show who formerly owned the land or when her father bought it.5
Land deed named in1 September 1853She was named in a deed on 1 September 1853 at Accomack Co, VA. Decree of Circuit Superior Court of Law & Chancery of June term 1850. In a Chancery Cause Robert J. Poulson, guardian of Peggy Douglas Bagwell, plaintiff, and her and others, defendants, a sale was ordered of land she was seized & possessed from her father Henry Bagwell, who lately died seized of the land, including a certain tavern lot at the Court House, adjoining the land of Edmund R. Allen & others. Poulson sold the Tavern House & lot on 20 Sep 1850 to John S. Lilliston. (There is no entry in the Deed Bk index for this sale. This must be the land Henry Bagwell bought 1 June 1837 from Thomas Lilliston and his wife Julian and is Whitelaw's tract A91E, see Whitelaw page 995 & 999.)6
Marriage*circa 1868She married Edmund R. Bagwell, son of Dr. Thomas P. Bagwell and Sarah Hamilton 'Sally' Wise, circa 1868.7,2

The information was provided by Anna B. Simmerman of Accomac, VA (who was her daughter).2
Burial*Margaret was buried at Mt. Holly Cemetery, Onancock, Accomack Co, VA. The tombstone book shows her as Margaret Douglas Bagwell, wife of E.R., 30 Jan 1846 - 14 Sep 1916.8
Anecdote* Based on her middle name being Douglas, it seems logical that she could be a descendant of Col. George Douglas (1695-1758) and his wife Tabitha Drummond (1707-1761). They had a daughter Margaret 'Peggy' Douglas (1736-1808) who married first Col. John Wise (1723-1769) and married second Ayres Gillett (1730-1779), but their children are otherwise accounted for. She had a sister Tabitha Douglas (1738-aft.1778) who married Col. John Wise's brother Tully Robinson Wise (1725-1778) and they had a son George Douglas Wise (1760-1839), and their children are also otherwise accounted for.
