Mrs. Gladys Marie Long Birch, 70, wife of the late Delbert Wayne Birch, passed away Sunday, August 7, 2016 at her home in Sanford, VA, surrounded by loving family. She was born on September 12, 1945, in Sanford, a daughter of the late Philip Charles Long and Ina Pearl Onley Long. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Delbert Wayne Birch, and a brother, Robert (Bobby) Long. Gladys is survived by her daughter, Diana Kio and husband, Shane of Sanford; two grandchildren, Carolyn Marie Kio and Christopher Wayne Kio, all of Sanford, VA; three brothers, Walter Long, William (Bill) Long and Carson Long all of Pocomoke; two nieces, Karen Long of Parksley, VA and Jennifer Ritchey of Pocomoke; a nephew, Eric Long of Pocomoke and many great nieces and nephews. Gladys was an active member of Sanford United Methodist Church. She served as secretary for the Sanford United Women’s Division and enjoyed helping at vacation Bible school. She loved playing dominoes, crocheting, painting and going on family picnics. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother. Friends and family will miss her spunk and strong will. The family would like to thank the nurses and caregivers of Intrepid Hospice for their tender and loving care, especially Pat and Vanessa. A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, August 10th at 2:00 PM from the Sanford United Methodist Church with Rev. William Jefferson officiating. Interment will follow in the Groton’s Cemetery in Hallwood. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Sanford United Methodist Church, 23279 Saxis Road, Sanford, VA. Arrangements are by the Thornton Funeral Home in Parksley, VA.
