Obituary*30 November 1904His obituary was published on 30 November 1904 at Baltimore, MD. Engineer Onley's Body Found (Special Dispatch to the Baltimore Sun) Norfolk, Va., Nov 29, 1904. The body of John R. Onley, a marine engineer, who has been missing for two weeks, was found this morning, floating in the river at Taylor's coal dock. He was 27 years old and came from Accomac county, on the Eastern Shore. His body has been shipped to his old home for burial. The coroner's verdict ascribes the death to accidental drowning.2

Thomas Riley and wife Elizabeth (attorney: Littleton Dennis) complained against Ezekiel Young, Thomas Wise with wife Wise, Thomas Young, John Young (both minor orphans of John Young), John Only, Elizth Only and Tabitha Only (Charles Bagwell representing the last five). Ordered that Smith Snead, John Snead, Thomas Custis and Spencer Drumond (or three of them) divide the slaves mentioned in the bill and report next court. On 28 June 1758 it was recorded that in Thomas Riley with wife Elizabeth vs Ezekiel Young, Thomas Wise with wife Wise, Thomas Young, John Young, John Onley, Elizabeth Onley and Tabitha Onley, the slaves mentioned in the bill were distributed as follows: To Thos Wise and wife Wise – Negro Robin (worth £15) and to pay £3:15:00 each to the Rileys, Ezekiel and Smith Onley’s children. To Ezekiel Young – a Negro girl called Dilly (£15) and to pay £3 each to the Rileys, Onley children, John Young’s children and the Wises. To Thos Riley and wife – a Negro woman called Hannah (£35) and to pay £7 each to Ezekiel, the Wises, the Onley children and John Young’s children. To John Young’s children – £10. To Smith Onley’s children – £13:15:00. Costs were equally shared. Signed by Thos Custis, Spencer Drumond and Smith Snead.1 
Est Settm't Father's*1 March 1763He was named in the settlement of his father's estate on 1 March 1763 at Sussex Co, DE. The petition of Lorance Riley of Sussex on Delaware, yeoman, setting forth that Smith Only late of the county aforesaid dec'd intestate and at the time of his death was possessed of a tract of land in the Broad Kill Hundred in Sussex . . . supposed to contain 200 acres & left issue a son named John Onley (of age) & 2 daughters (unnamed) & the son being of age, your petitioner having made a purchase of the aforesaid John 2 shares as may appear by deed duly affixed. Your petitioner therefore (as the purchaser) order for a division of the land aforesaid. Whereupon the court appointed Mesrs John Spencer Esqr, Willm Fowler, Jno Clowes Jnr, Willm Tull & Lodiwick Warren to divide the land. (Sussex Co, DE, Orphans Court Records, Vol 4, p. 67.)2 
Anecdote*29 March 1763 On 29 Mar 1763 in Accomack Court Ezekiel Young vs. John Only (for attachment) was continued.3 
Anecdote3 June 1763 On 3 Jun 1763 in Accomack Court Rodger Abbot (attorney: James Henry) brought attachment against John Only, who failed to appear. Thomas Riley swore he had nothing of Only’s; Ezekiel Young had nothing at present, but had had “five Plain Stocks, Some with irons in them,” a gouge, chisel, auger, two-foot rule, an old stocking and a file. Abbot was to recover £10 with 5% interest from 25 January 1763. An additional attachment was issued. Also on this same date Ezekiel Young’s attachment against John Only was dismissed; Young’s bond was judged insufficient.4 
Land sold*22 June 1763He sold land on 22 June 1763 at Sussex Co, DE. From John Onley, planter of Sussex Co, DE, to Lawrence Ryley, planter of the same place. For 30 pounds John Onley's part of 200 acres, i.e., 1/2 as per the law as the oldest son. Tract is situated in Broadkill Hundred and was land that Smith Onley died possessed of and was laid out for 200 acres. Land adjoins on the north land in possession of John Holmes, easterly on land in possession of Ezekiel Reed, southerly on land in possession of Walter Reed, and westerly on land in possession of William Carpenter Jr. Smith Onley purchased the land from Daniel Ponder and when Smith Onley died intestate the tract devolved to his 3 children: John Onley, Elizabeth Onley and Tabitha Onley. (NOTE: Elizabeth Onley married Littleton Reed, son of John Reed, maybe Jr., and an Abbott girl.) John Onley appoints John Clowes Sr and John Clowes Jr to be his attornies. John Onley signs. Land bought*28 June 1774John bought land on 28 June 1774 at Matchapungo Creek, Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Joshua Wyatt of Northampton County, twiner and George Cutler of Accomack County, black smith, to John Onely, joiner. That as William Wyatt dec’d left by his will land to be sold for cash & appointed the above Joshua Wyatt & George Cutler Extrs of his will, for 134 pounds, 17 shillings current money a tract of land containing 93 acres adjoining northerly by John Taylor, easterly by John Lingo, southerly by Housen Mapp & westerly on Meers Branch. Whitelaw adds that William Wyatt's executor sold 93 acres to John Onely and in 1794, he (wife Nancy) left it to his son Jesse Only..6,7

It was on this date that Jonathan Garrison & Susannah his wife to John Only for 540 pounds current money all the rights that belong to Jonathan Garrison & Susannah his wife as a dower in all land which the said John Only bought of the Extrs of William Wyatt which formerly belonged to the said William Wyatt and was laid off to be 97 acres on the head of Matchapungo Creek adjoining to the Beaver Dam Branch. Anecdote25 February 1783 The only appearance in the indexes to the Acc Co Order books from 1767 to 1787 were the following entries: On 25 Feb 1783 John Only petition for leave to turn a road. It was ordered that Thomas Custis, Housen Mapp & John Smith or any 2 of them view the same and make a report to the next court of the convenience or inconvenience attending said alteration. On 26 Feb 1783 John Only plantif against Arthur Teackle defendant. Same rule John Teackle of this county entering himself special bail in common form. On 28 Sep 1784 John Only Plantif against Arthur Teackle defendant. Same rule the defendant pleading non assumpsit.13,14

But the true intent & meaning of this writing is that should Joseph Heath fail to pay this amount to John Only with lawful interest from this date then it shall be lawful for the said Only to dispose of so much of the said Negroes by a fair and public sale as will satisfy the aforesaid sum and other expenses attending these presents and that after such sale the money and remaining Negroes (if any) to be returned to Joseph Heath. Elizabeth along with the Walkers were present in court; John and Alice alleged that Elizabeth's mother had given her to them till she attained lawful age. Capt. John Custis (attorney for Onely) objected that the Walkers could not produce an indenture and had no right to keep the child in their service. The court agreed that the "right and property of the said child is in ye father." Elizabeth was to "be wholly at her said father's disposal."6

Anecdote*5 December 1704 On 5 Dec 1704 in Accomack Court Luke Lalor presented a letter of attorney made to him by Susana Watson to acknowledged a deed of gift she made to her son Robert Watson, her son David Watson, her grandson Jno. Watson, her granddaughter Sarah Scott, and her daughter-in-law (David Wattson's wife). The letter of attorney was proved by the oaths of Peter Watkinson and Jno. Onely.3 
Appraiser*4 October 1709John was named as an appraiser of an estate on 4 October 1709 at Accomack Co, VA. Ordered that Edward Kellam, William Kellam, John Meers and John Only (or any three of them) inventory the estate of Thomas Savage before the next court.4 
Land bought*6 September 1710John bought land on 6 September 1710 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Francis Hill of Accomack Co sells to John Onely of same place for 10,000 lbs of tobacco 117 acres which was confirmed by deed by Elizabeth Scarburgh to John Perry dec'd bearing date August 1703 & recorded 12th day of the same in the same year & also 100 acres confirmed by deed made by Tabitha Hill widow bearing date 1704 and recorded on 15 April 1704 to him the said John Perry, and by the will of John Perry dec'd his widow Joan Perry during her life and then to Francis Hill the said will being also upon the records of Accomack by deed of gift made by Joan Perry widow to me Francis Hill for her life baring date 1 Aug 1710 & recorded 19th of the same month & year relation being thereunto and to every of them doth & may more at large appears and manifested the aforesaid 217 acres . . . Singed: Francis (his X mark) Hill. Witt: Wm. Custis & Christopher Broke. Then on 5 Dec 1710 Elizabeth (her X mark) Hill, the lawful wife of Francis Hill relinquished her right of dower in this land. Witt: Wm. Robinson & Jno. Lewis. According to Whitelaw (p. 853) it was in this year that Francis and Elizabeth Hill sold 100 acres to John Only, who died in 1722(sic) actually 1719, leaving a widow Micall and a son William as heir-at-law and that Micall married Jacob Rodgers. According to Turman the land was located between the present villages of Locustville and Onley, north of Burtons Branch, a run of Little Metompkin Creek. According to Whitelaw (p. 861) William Only inherited the whole from his father John, except that in 1719 John and Tabitha Bagwell confirmed to John Only the 117 acre part of his land which Elizabeth Scarburgh had sold to John Perry in 1703. (NOTE: John Bagwell's wife Tabitha was the daughter of this Elizabeth Scarburgh, not a daughter of the John Only who died in 1719, which was reported my Turman.) (NOTE: Whitelaw did not realize that John's son William died in 1734 and left a son William to inherit and then in 1738 John's son Fairfax left his brother William's son William his 1/2 of the land.)5,6,7,8

Whitelaw adds that John & Tabitha Bagwell confirmed to John Only a part of his land which Elizabeth Scarburgh had sold to John Perry. On 1 Dec 1719 Mr. John Bagwell and his wife Tabitha presented and acknowledged a deed for land they sold to John Only.8,9

Report stated that there was 225 acres of land but that it could not be divided without spoiling the whole since part of it was so poor. Lawrence Riley then on 9 Feb 1764 requested that a valuation on the land be performed. The Court so ordered the same persons to perform the valuation. Anecdote*3 June 1763 On 3 June 1763 in Accomack Court Luke Luker sued Joseph Custis, Fairfax and William Only, who failed to appear. The judgment against them and Sheriff Charles Stockly was confirmed for £15 with interest from 28 October 1761 (CaSa: 21 Jun 1763).6 
Anecdote*31 August 1763 On 31 Aug 1763 in Accomack Court John Bandfeild was found guilty of speaking slanderous words against John Bonnewell, who was awarded damages of seven pence. Bonewell’s witnesses: Thomas James, Fairfax Only and Joseph Custis (two days); for Bandfeild: Charles Leatherberry and Robert Maxwell (two days).7 
Anecdote30 December 1763 On 30 Dec 1763 in Accomack Court Thomas Parramore (attorney: Littleton Dennis) sued Fairfax Only and William Only, who failed to appear; they and their bail (John Foster and Tilney Rodgers) were to pay the debt.8
