The tax records for Somerset County in 1730, 1733 and 1734 show Ephriam Vessells is shown as a dependent in the home of James Vessells. (NOTE: The assumption is that he had become age 16 in order to be listed as a dependent.)2 
Land bought*28 August 1744He bought land on 28 August 1744 at Cedar Island, Accomack Co, VA. Henry Hickman, George Hickman and Edward Hickman sold this tract to Ephraim Wessells for 30 pounds, a tract of 50 aces called Cedar Island "lying at the northermost end of Jobs Island running toward Roger Hickman's Parcel. Another deed, recorded in Sept 1744, sold 10 additional acres on Cedar Island to William Young Junr. This 10 acres was called the residue of 60 acres, 50 having been sold to Ephraim Wessells, and appears to have been the entire inherited tract.3 
Land bought*1749Ephraim bought land in 1749 at Accomack Co, VA. It was in this year that Ephraim Vessells bought 50 acres of tract A109 (west of Parksley) from Mark and Sarah Ewell. He also bought another 2 acres of A109 from Richard Justice (Whitelaw, p. 1108-9). In 1767 Ephraim Vessells bought 15 acres of A111 (near Guilford) from Benjamin and Susannah Royal (Whitelaw, p. 1114)..4

Biography*Ephraim Vessels Sr. is listed in the 1800 Acc Co Census as over 45 (b. before 1755) with a wife of the same age, 3 males: one 10-16 (bc 1785-90) and two 16-26 (bc 1775-85), 4 females: two under 10 (bc 1790-1800), one 10-16 (bc 1785-90) and one 16-26 (bc 1775-85), and 4 slaves. In 1790 Ephraim Wessells bought 107 acres of A114 (just north of Parksley) from Spencer and Elishe Hickman. The land was between the branch and the Parksley road. In 1814 Ephraim Wessells left it to a son Thomas and nearly 40 years later, after the death of a Thomas H. Wessells, a survey showed 96 acres (Whitelaw, pp. 1121-2). In his will written 20 Sep 1813 he named: a wife Amey; sons Ephraim, Isaac, Thomas (Thomas got the 85 acres purchased from Thomas Cropper, guardian to the heirs of my brother Elijah Wessels); daughters Nancy Wessels and Polly Onions; executors were his 3 sons Ephraim, Issac and Thomas. Witnesses were John Wessels Senr., Robert Taylor and Charles Bagwell. Securities for probate were John Wessells, Isaiah Johnson, and Robert Taylor.

Death*1904Mary died in 1904 at Berkley Section, Norfolk, VA. Mrs. Anne French, wife of Captain W.H. French, of the French Wrecking Company, of this town, died yesterday morning at 5:40 o'clock at her home on Pearl Street after a brief illness of pneumonia. The deceased was born in Onancock, VA, in 1838 and was in the sixty-sixth year. She moved to Norfolk, where she lived some time before becoming the wife of Captain French, subsequently moving to Berkley. During her residence here (Berkley) she made numerous warm friends, who will be pained to learn of her death. Mrs. French was the daughter of the late Captain William and Mrs. Elizabeth Sparrow, of the Eastern Shore. She leaves four children to mourn their loss, two sons - George W. Glenn and W.N. French - and two daughters - Mrs. George M. Old and Mrs. Leroy M. Lewis. She was an active and consistent member of the Main Street Christian Church and will be greatly missed by that congregation (Virginian Pilot, 7th - Year & Month missing from cutout)..1

She is survived by one son: Fonteen Trader of Bedford, two grandsons, Chad and Brian Trader and three great grandchildren, Kameryn, Courtney, and Brian Trader, II, and several nieces and nephews. Other than her parents, Emily was preceded in death by her husbands, Fonteen Trader, Earl Howard and Carroll Marshall. A graveside service will be held 11:00 am on Friday, September 2, at Downing's Cemetery in Oak Hall, VA, Mr. Wayne Hill will officiate. Arrangements are by the Thornton Funeral Home, 24183 Chadbourne Street, Parksley, VA.

Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday, July 5th, conducted by Rev. C.C. Elzey and Rev. E.C. Wilmer and interment was in Grotons Cemetery. The active pallbears were Messrs Newman White, Wm.
