Land sold1839He sold land in 1839 at Pastoria, Acc Co, VA. It was in this year that James Melson sold his 6 acres of tract A103 to Colomore C. Hinman and 5 years later he and his wife Lovey H. sold to Dr. William T. Core. The house is shown in Whitelaw as tract A103B, called the Core Place. The house with 2 brick ends probably was built by James Melson following his purchase in 1800. The end wall of the parlor is paneled, and on each side of the fireplace are cupboards, with 20-pane glass doors with arched mouldings over the top row. The mantel is plain except for a delicate reeding, which also appears around the window frames and the room has a horizontal board wainscoting. The wainscoting in the dining room is vertically paneled, and the mantel is plain. To the right of it the wall is paneled, with a cupboard simiiar to those in the parlor; at one time the wall on the other side had the same treatment, but that woodwork has since been removed.4

Melson with Levi Dix, James Eichelberger & Colmore C. Hinman securities. NOTE: The original record seems to be dated 31 Jan 1842 and reads "On the motion of Elizabeth S. Melson, $5,000 bond, with Levi Dix, James Eichelberger & Colmore C. Hinman security, administartion granted on the estate of James Melson dec'd."9

Bagwell gave to son Thomas Bagwell the land on which I now reside containing 206 acres & 20 acres of swamp land, being part of the land I purchased of John M. Poulson, adjoining the heirs of Revell Dix & Negro man Charles, one boy Kiah... 1/3 of my water grist & saw mill & 1/3 of 7 acres adjoining Poulson's mill. To daughter Margaret R. Bagwell the land I purchased of Thomas Cropper being the land formerly of George Bundick & 20 acres in the swamp it being part of the land I purchased of John M. Poulson adjoining son Thomas Bagwell & Negro boy Henry & one girl Ibby & one bureau. Extr. to pursue the Suit in Chancery against Thomas Cropper to recover a deficiency in the quantity of land I purchased of him. To daughter Margaret 1/3 part of water grist & sawmill & 1/3 of 7 acres adjoining Poulson's mills. To wife Margaret ... & my Negro woman Rose & at my wife's death or marriage Rose to be free or the liberty to serve any of my children if she will not accept her freedom. If my wife claims her dower in my mill at Assawoman & the 22 acres in the same neighborhood, my son Thomas & my daughter Margaret, out of the estate devised to them, shall pay to the trustees herein appointed for my daughter Sarah P. Burton & her children a sum annually equal to the annual value of the dower so claimed to be applied to the use of my daughter Sarah & her children. Burton. Negroes Abel, Solomon & Sabra his wife to be free on the condition now prescribed by law, otherwise the said Negroes shall be at liberty to serve which of my children they please. To friend William Bagwell & to my son Thomas Bagwell in trust for the use of my daughter Sarah P. Burton & her children, that tract of land on which John B. Burton now resides & the residue of that tract of land which I purchased of John M. Poulson of which I devised to my son Thomas & daughter Margaret 20 acres each, the residue to be about 100 acres. To said trustees my water grist mill & 22 acres near the head of Assawoman Creek & my Negro woman Nanny & Easter & boy Colly & the property conveyed to me by John B. Burton to receive the payment for his bonds for $873.78 dated 2 Jun 1821 for the use of my daughter Sarah P. Burton during her natural life without her husband, the said John B. Burton, having any control over the same. My trustees to pay Revell Twiford the annuity of $15 which he is entitled for his interest in the land above devised to said trustees. It was in this year that Henry Greenalds (wife Catherine) died intestate and was succeeded by a son Elijah, who in 1818 (wife Sarah) left to his son Southy the part between the creek and the neck road, and to his son William that above the road; after the death of William a few years later, his part was bought by Southy. In 1844 he and his wife Maria Grinnalds sold a 200-acre plantation to Shalmaneser Davis.2

Will - Witnessed*28 October 1843Southy witnessed a will on 28 October 1843 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Polly Ayres, Margaret Ayres & Southy Grinnalds witnessed the will of Lavinia Lewis.14 
Land sold*1844Southy sold land in 1844 at Accomack Co, VA. It was in this year that Southy, the son of Elijah Greenalds, and his wife Maria Grinnalds sold a 200-acres plantation to Shalmaneser Davis..4 
Death*before 30 September 1844He died before 30 September 1844 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Robert A. Young was named to settle the estate of Maria Grinnalds. Edward J. Young and Isaiah W. Bagwell were the securities. (NOTE: He was evidently dec'd by this date, as he would have been named to settle his wife's estate. However, Turman shows he died in 1856, but does not show a reference for this, but does show that a record of Southy after 1844 is being sought.)15,2
