Mears, age 21, the daughter of Luther J. & Mary S. Mears and that they were married on 26 Feb 1882 by J.W.A. Elliott. However, the Peninsula Enterprise, 2 Feb 1882 issues, shows him as John Tatum and that they were married on 26 Jan 1882..2,3

He was shown as John Tatem the head of HH#407, a 49 year old farm laborer, born Aug 1850 in VA as were both of his parents. Listed with him were the following Tatems: Mary, a 44 year old wife; Rey, a 10 year old son; Lola, an 8 year old daughter; John, a 6 year old son; George, a 5 year old son; Norton, a 2 year old son; and Henry, a 1 year old son. (NOTE: There is a lot of mark overs on the birth dates and ages.)4 
Census head*18 April 1910John was listed as a head of household in the census of 18 April 1910 at Main County Road, Franktown District, Northampton Co, VA. He was shown as John E. Tatum the head of HH#40, a 55 year old teamster, born in VA as were both of his parents. Listed with him was George Tatum, a 19 year old son who was shucking oysters and Harry Tatum, and 11 year old son.5
