Death*before 10 August 1869He died before 10 August 1869 at Oak Hall, Accomack Co, VA. From the Newtown Gazette - Horrible Murder in Accomac County, Virginia - (Date missing) The quiet neighborhood of Oak Hall was startled on the morning of the 23d ult., on hearing of the brutal murder the previous night of Mr. Ayres W. Tatum, who resided near that village. It appears from the statements of his wife that the family, consisting of herself, husband and child, had retired on the night of the murder at the usual hour; that Mr. Tatum arose about five o'clock and went to the cookhouse, for what purpose she could not tell, that he had been there but a short time when she heard him exclaim, "Lord have mercy!" that she immediately rushed to the kitchen and found her husband weltering in his blood, that under the fear and distress of the moment, she also states, in proceeding from the door, she saw a man run from behind the house. What adds to the mystery of the crime is the fact that Mr. Tatum was a very quiet and inoffensive man, much liked by the community in which he moved, and was supposed to have been entirely devoid of enemies. It is not reasonable to suppose that gain could be the murderous object, as the deceased was possess of but moderate means, and nothing seems to have been taken from the house. This heinous crime has occasioned much excitement which, with the varied suspicions of the public, will, perhaps, be allaved by the action of the authorities. P.S. - Since the above was put in type, we have learned that the above case has been brought before Justice Henderson, who, upon consideration of the evidence, issued a writ for the arrest of a Negro man as the murderer, and the wife of the deceased as an accomplice. It appears that the deceased was murdered with his own axe, as it was found lying close by him in a bloody condition. Two or three stabs were discovered about his body. Neighbors report frequent disagreements between Mr. Tatum and his wife. It was generally thought she disliked her husband and that she was the cause of all their family disturbances. Her evidence before the Magistrate, we understand, was given in contradictory and suspicious manner.
From the 10 Aug 1869 Alexandria Gazette - Arrest of an Alleged Murderer - A Negro man sporting the sobriquet of "John Walkabout" was recently arrested in Chincoteague Island, on suspicion of being concerned in the murder of Ayres Tatem, of Accomac County, VA, some three or four years ago - Our readers of Accomac and also of this vicinity will probably call afresh to their minds the horrid transaction, when we state that Tatem's wife was tried and convicted her being mainly circumstantial, she was subsequently pardoned by the then military Governor of the State, and soon after remarried. John, however, since his arrest, has made a clean breast of it, and says that Mrs. Tatem hired him to murder her husband to make room for him who now legitimatley shares her bed and board. (NOTE: Walkabout insisted that she was to pay him about $300 for the deed. He was hanged for the murder in 1870. Shortly after Sarah Ann returned home and married her cousin Zadock T Taylor. Later they moved to Whitestone, Lancaster Co, VA, where she died in 1911.)6
Anecdote*8 August 1870 Another Execution in Virginia (Special Correspondence of the Baltimore Sun) Hanging of John Walkabout, Colored, at Drummondtown, Va., for Murder. - He dies protesting his innocence - Circumstances Connected with the Murder - A Former Confession and Subsequent Denial of the Crime, &c. Drummondtown, Accomac County, Va., Friday, August 5th, 1870. John Walkabout, colored, convicted of the murder of a farmer of this county, named Tatum, some eleven months ago, was hanged here today. There was some mention of the murder at the time of the occurrence; Tatum's wife was convicted as an accomplice in the crime, and sentenced to imprisonment for five years, but subsequently pardoned. Walkabout escaped from custody and was at large for a long time, and his trial, conviction, sentence and execution followed in quick succession. At precisely twenty minutes past one o'clock today Walkabout was launched into eternity, in the Drummondtown jail-yard, in the presence of about 150 spectators. On the scaffold he stated that there was a time when he could have acquitted himself by informing on the murderer, but now everything was over; he had closed his book and had nothing more to say. The particulars of the murder for Walkabout was hanged are interesting. - HISTORY OF THE CASE - About ten or eleven months since, the inhabitants in the vicinity of Oak Hall and Horntown, in Accomac County, Va, were thrown into the wildest state of excitement, caused by the murder of a Mr. Tatum, residing about midway between the above named places, and about sixteen miles from Drummondtown, the county seat. Mr. Tatum, the murdered man, was a native of Accomac County, and was about 29 years of age. He was of good family, quiet and inoffensive, and was much respected by all who know him, and two or three years since married a Miss Taylor, of the same county, and they went to live on a farm owned by Mr. Tatum, near Oak Hall. He also owned the adjoining farm, and the two farms were estimated to be worth from ten to twelve thousand dollars. - MRS. TATUM AND WALKABOUT - On the night of the murder, about 11 o'clock, Mrs. Tatum called at the house of the nearest neighbor about two of three hundred yards distance, and informed them that something wrong was going on over at the house and requested one of the men to go over. The neighbors believing she had been quarreling with her husband, she had been told to go home and behave herself. She, however, insisted on some one going, and one of the men consented, taking her with him. The house was soon reached, and on entering it the neighbor found himself in darkness. A candle was soon found and lighted, and he commenced an examination of the premises. The woman here stated that she had left a household vessel in the room adjoining during the day, and a short time after she and her husband retired she requested her husband to get it. He immediately arose and went into an adjoining room, when, she states, she heard a blow struck and a sound like the fall of a body, and, becoming alarmed, she seized her child and hastened to the nearest farmhouse. On entering the room indicated the body of Tatum was found, with an axe buried in his skull, which had nearly cut the head in two. He had been struck while in the act of stooping to pick up the vessel from the fireplace. A window on the right of the murdered man was raised, and tracks were discovered leading from the window, showing the escape of the murderer. - ARREST OF MRS. TATUM AND WALKABOUT - The authorities were immediately notified, and a day or two after Mrs. Tatum was arrested, and several days later Walkabout was also arrested, and both fully committed on the charge of murder. The woman was assigned to an attic at Adair's Hotel, at Drummondtown, and Walkabout was confined in the jail at the same place, which is a very old but secure one. - AN ALLEGED CONFESSION AND ESCAPE - In the cell with Walkabout was another negro, confined on the charge of theft, and the two at once set upon and attempt to escape. The prison is built of brick, and secured between the walls with broad strips of iron about three inches apart. The building is about 75 or 80 deep by 20 feet front, one story high, and contains three cells, with one cell opening into the other. These cells as a general thing are unlocked during the day, and prisoners permitted to mingle with each other, and during Walkabout's first confinement he confessed his guilt to a negro woman whom he was acquainted with, who was also a prisoner in the jail. Some seven or eight days after his arrest Walkabout and the negro man confined with him effected their escape by cutting a hole through the roof of the prison, and remained at large some four or five months. - MRS. TATUM'S CONVICIONT AND PARDON - In the meantime Mrs. Tatum's trial came off, and she was found guilty of murder in the second degree, and sentenced to five years confinement, but was pardoned by Governor Wells before being sent to Richmond. She returned to her home, where the murder a short time before had been committed, and before a month had expired married again, this time her cousin being the happy man. - RECAPTURE OF WALKABOUT - Walkabout after his escape made his way to Chincoteague Island, some thirty miles distant, where he was not known, and remained there until he heard of the pardon of Mrs. Tatum, when he crossed from the island to the mainland and started bright and early on the morning of the next day to find Mrs. Tatum, and on the road was met by and old man, who spoke to Walkabout and asked him where he was going, who replied that he was going to see Mrs. Tatum, who owed him $300. He hurried off and notified several farmers who started in pursuit of him, but Walkabout got wind of what was going on and reached Mrs. Tatum's house first, where it is said he got a small sum of money and again succeeded in eluding his pursers. He returned again, however, in ten or twelve days, and was again recognized and followed to Mrs. Tatum's. A second part was dispatched to Drummondtown and notified the sheriff, who, with the assistance of several citizens, surrounded the house and capture Walkabout, who was taken back to his old quarters at Drummondtown jail. Here he was kept in irons until the day of his execution. -TRAOIL, CONVICTION AND EXECUTION - The woman to whom Walkabout confessed was produced by the prosecuting attorney, who stated in her evidence that Walkabout said that Mrs. Tatum and he had arranged the murder during the day, and she had promised him $300 if he would kill her husband. On the other hand, Walkabout has denied it, and protested his innocence to the last. His trial only lasted one day, and resulted in a verdict of "guilty of murder in the first degree," and he was sentenced to be hanged, and the Governor appointed Friday, the 5th day of August, as the day of execution. Every effort was made by his counsel to obtain for the condemned man a reprieve, but the Governor steadily refused to grant it, and the sentence was carried out today as above stated.7

Anecdote*August 1869 From the Newtown Gazette - Horrible Murder in Accomac County, Virginia - (Date missing) The quiet neighborhood of Oak Hall was startled on the morning of the 23d ult., on hearing of the brutal murder the previous night of Mr.
Later they moved to Whitestone, Lancaster Co, VA, where she died in 1911.)5
Census w/husband*1870Sarah was listed with her husband in the census of 1870 at Atlantic District, Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as Zeddoc Taylor the head of HH#76, a 22 year old farmer with real estate valued at $400 and personal property valued at $400. Listed with him were Sarah Taylor, age 31; John Tatum, age 12; and Osco Tatum, age 4.6
Anecdote8 August 1870 Another Execution in Virginia (Special Correspondence of the Baltimore Sun) Hanging of John Walkabout, Colored, at Drummondtown, Va., for Murder.
