Anecdote*1964 In 1964 an article appeared in a local newspaper titled "The Lankford Family of Lankford's Island" (near Guard Shore). It was written by Mr. Finney Somers as told to him by Mrs. Stella Scott Judefind (1875-1970), an 89 year old widow of a Methodist Minister and also a resident of Parksley. She was the daughter of the late Arinthia Lankford and John Thomas Scott and the great granddaughter of the original Selby Lankford, who is mentioned in the story. Mrs. Judefind stated that these notations on the Lankford family history were from memory as given by her mother who died in June 1901. According to Mrs. Judefind three small English boys with their nurse were washed a-shore in a terrific shipwreck off our Atlantic Coast (about 1800) on their way to or from the West Indies. Selby Lankford remained on Virginia's Eastern Shore, one was taken to Princess Anne, MD and other to Norfolk, so the Lankfords from those towns sprang from the same source. (NOTE: This part of the story proved to be inaccurate as when Selby Lankford Sr. died in 1866 his son reported that Selby's father was Solomon Lankford and there was a Solomon Lankford on the 1787 tax list in the upper part of Accomack Co, then known as Accomack Parish, and there was a Solomon Lankford on the 1733 & 1738 tax list for Somerset Co, MD, along with many other Lankfords. Selby is also a common family name in Somerset and Worcester Counties where this family evidently originated.) Mrs. Judefind continued the story by saying that Selby Lankford grew to manhood and married Amy Lewis of Hunting Creek. He bought an island near Guard Shore, built a house on it and always lived there. It is known as Lankford's Island to this day. Those were the days of slavery and Selby had a few. There were Pete and Violet, who, I think, were brother and sister. Violet had two children George and Fannie, and a grand-daughter whose name was Rachael. Rachael was about my age and a delightful playmate. The island had a rich soil, and vegetables, flowers and fruit grew in abundance; also there were pigs, poultry and cows. It was a little kingdom by itself, and Selby was lord of it all.16
