Anecdote*5 March 1905 On 5 March 1905 the following article was published in the Richmond Times Dispatch - Captain Thomas Johnson, the patriarch of the Eastern Shore of Virginia, who very recently celebrated his ninety-fifth birthday, is a remarkable specimen of virile old age. His strenuous actions in manual and grasp of an extensive business challenge the efforts. His great ambition is to live to be one hundred years old, and from his active and sturdy appearance this would seem a possible mark. His eyesight is as good as when he was a boy, reads the newspapers regularly and keeps up with the affairs of the world. His activities are surprising. He collects his own rents from an extensive property, and only last fall bought additional land in the town of Onancock and built seven dwellings on it. Captain Johnson retains the old English pronunciation and calls them hausen. He conducts a large warehouse, in which he stores each fall 1,000 barrels of sweet potatoes for a better price in the winter. He attends to the repacking and shipping himself, and may be seen any day driving a cart to the wharf loaded with potatoes for shipment. - OVER NINETY-FIVE - Captain Johnson was born in Accomac county December 7, 1809. At the time of his birth James Madison had just become President of the United States, and Napoleon Bonaparte was at the summit of his power, Thomas Jefferson had just gone into honorable retirement at Monticello, and three years were to elapse before our second war with England began. There were only seventeen States in the Union, with a population of about seven and a half millions, and bold adventurers were beginning to cross the Mississippi in settling the vast Louisiana territory that Jefferson had added to our domain in 1803. About twenty years were to go by before the first railway was built, and more then thirty before Morse could perfect the electro-magnetic telegraph. Captain John in these ninety-five years has seen the most momentous changes take place in all parts of the world. Emperors have risen and fallen and the ways of the world have been wonderfully changed. He early took to the sea and became a skillful navigator. - A BLOCKADE RUNNER - During the Civil War he and others from the Eastern Shore ran the blockade between that region and Richmond, bringing cargoes of goods and medicines that could not be secured within the Confederate lines. Captain Johnson made a great deal of money in this trade. They used to make the old Spotswood Hotel their headquarters while in Richmond, and a good many of the older citizens will doubtless recall the visits of these daring blockade runners. Captain Johnson has been twice married, and by his first wife had five children, all of whom are now living. He has numerous progeny of grand and great-grandchildren. Besides owning several valuable farms, Capt. Johnson possesses more houses and more land in the town of Onancock, than any other man. His home stands on the bank of Onancock Creek, and nearby are anchored his boats which in good weather he makes excursions to Tangier Island, and sometimes to the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay, where two of his children live. He manages his extensive business with ability and takes a lively interest in public affairs, and is an ardent admirer of the ladies. (NOTE: The article includes a full face picture of Captain Thomas Johnson.)1
