Rachel Cook left 40 acres each to her daughters Esther Russell and Sarah Russell; no evidence was found that Rachel had had a Russell husbanc, so each of the daughters may have married a Russell. The bequests were life interests only, with reversion to a son Benjamin Royal, who inherited the balance. In 1767 Benjamin and Susannah Royal sold 15 acres to Ephraim Vessells and 50 acres to Andrew Russell, the two pieces being at the south end of his inheritance; neither was traced further. In 1772 the Royals sold a balance of 131 acres to William Andrews.3

Biography*Although she was shown as Tabitha C. Hinmon in her father's will and in her husband's will, it appears that she and her children all went by the name Clayton after her husband's death. According to Whitelaw, after she inherited the land from her father Thomas Kelly in 1784, records usually showed her husband George Clayton Hinman as simply George Clayton, but when he died in 1800 he signed his will George C. Hinman. His wife Tabitha survived him, and for reason unknown she and the children all took the name of Clayton, instead of Hinman.
Birth*circa 1750Tabitha was born circa 1750 at Accomack Co, VA.
Marriage*circa 1774She married George Clayton Hinman circa 1774.1
Married Namecirca 1774 As of circa 1774,her married name was Hinman.
Will - Father's*23 January 1781Tabitha was named in her father's will on 23 January 1781 at Accomack Co, VA. She was shown as daughter Tabitha C. Hinman in the will of Thomas Kelly. She was given 1/2 of my land where I now live & 1/2 of my marsh on Guilford Creek. Kelly named George Clayton Hinman to be the Extr. of his will..1
Will - Husb's*22 December 1799Tabitha was named in her husband's will on 22 December 1799 at Accomack Co, VA. She was shown as wife Tabitha Hinmon in the will of George C. Hinmon. Hinmon named his wife Tabitha and son Dennis C. Hinmon Extrs. However, Dennis Clayton (not Dennis Clayton Hinmon) qaulified as Extr. at probate. George Clayton Hinman1

M, b. circa 1750, d. January 1800
Last Edited15 Jul 2001
Biography*Although he was shown as George Clayton Hinmon in his father-in-law's will and in his own will, it appears that his son Dennis, his wife Tabitha and his other son George all went by the name Clayton after his death. According to Whitelaw, after his wife Tabitha inherited the land from her father Thomas Kelly in 1784, records usually showed George Clayton Hinman as simply George Clayton, but when he died in 1800 he signed his will George C. Hinman. His wife Tabitha survived him, and for reason unknown she and the children all took the name of Clayton, instead of Hinman.
Birth*circa 1750George was born circa 1750 at Accomack Co, VA.
Marriage*circa 1774He married Tabitha C. Kelly, daughter of Thomas Kelly and Tabitha Tatham, circa 1774.2
Anecdote*23 January 1781 On 23 Jan 1781 he was named as George Clayton Hinman in the will of Thomas Kelly. Hinman was to have a road along Guilford Creek and was to be the Extr. of Kelly's will. Kelly also named a daughter Tabitha C. Hinman.2
Will*22 December 1799He made a will on 22 December 1799 at Accomack Co, VA. George C. Hinmon named a wife Tabitha and a son Dennis C. Hinmon. To wife Tabitha Hinmon all the land I bought of William Young Sr. during her natural life, then to my son Dennis C. Hinmon, he paying the sum now owing on same. Executors were wife Tabitha and son Dennis. Witnesses were Thomas Evans, George Hope Young and Capt. Epheram Vessels..3
Death*January 1800George died in January 1800.3
Probate*27 January 1800George's will was probated on 27 January 1800 at Accomack Co, VA. Dennis Clayton qualifed. It appears that Dennis and his mother Tabitha and his brother George all went by the name Clayton after this time..3

Last Edited21 Jan 2018
Birth*circa 1742Sorrowful was born circa 1742 at Accomack Co, VA.
Will - Grmoth's*circa 1750Sorrowful was named in her grandmother's will circa 1750 at Accomack Co, VA. She was shown as my granddaughter Sorrowful Booth (Ruth) Underhill in the undated will of Ann Clemens, son Stephen..1
Land inherited*1751She inherited land in 1751 at tract A121, Modest Town, Accomack Co, VA. Mrs. Clemens left part of this tract to Jane Brook Clemens, with first revision to Stephen Clemens, and a final revision to Sorrowful Booth (Ruth) Underhill; the first two were her children and the last a grandchild. Afther the death of Ruth Gray, formerly Sorrowful Ruth Underhill, a survey in 1784 showed 107 acres for her heirs.2
Marriage*circa 1760She married Solomon (of Thos & Tab) Gray (I), son of Thomas Gray and Tabitha Melson, circa 1760 at Accomack Co, VA.2
Married Namecirca 1760 As of circa 1760,her married name was Gray.
Death*before 1784Sorrowful died before 1784 at Accomack Co, VA. Afther the death of Ruth Gray, formerly Sorrowful Ruth Underhill, a survey in 1784 showed 107 acres for her heirs..2
Anecdote* Assumptions on the parents of Sorrowful Ruth Underhill - Her grandfather Peter Cemens died in 1721 in N'hamp Co and her grandmother Ann Clemens was living in N'hamp Co in 1741 when she bought 107 acres of tract A121 near Modest Town. Ann Clemens died in 1751 in Acc Co and left this 107 acres to daughter Jane Brook Clemens, with first revision to son Stephen Clemens, and a final reversion to her grandchild Sorrowful Ruth Underhill, who died by 1784 leaving this 107 acres to her heirs. Ruth's unknown mother, who married an Underhill, was evidently born in N'hamp Co before her father died in 1721 and was probably still in N'hamp Co when her mother Ann Clemens bought the above land. Therefore, she evidently married one of the N'hamp Underhills and Ruth was the daughter of one of the N'hamp Underhills. The most logical choice of the known N'hamp Underhills seems to be Michael Underhill II who was last noted as alive in 1748 in N'hamp Co. This is also based on the assumption that Ruth was probably an only child as her grandmother Ann Clemens named only her as a grandchild in her will. When looking at the known Accomack Underhills, there doesn't seem to be a logical choice. She was the right age to be a sister of Micajah (b.c. 1735) and Capt. William (b.c. 1750), the assumed sons of Salathiel. However, the Rev. War bounty land for the service of Capt. William Underhill went to the children of his brother Micajah, saying they were the only heirs of Capt. William Underhill, implying there were no other living relatives, thus eliminating Ruth Underhill as one of the Accomack Underhills.

Land left*1758He left land in 1758 at tract A100, south of Parksley, Accomack Co, VA. John Melson died intestate and was succeeded by a son Solomon, who in 1774 left a home place of 50 acres to his son Isaac and a balance of 60 acres to his son Daniel. Solomon's acquisition of the 50 acres was not noted, nor how it went from Isaac to Daniel, but in a later survey of adjacent land it then belonged to Daniel and formed the northeast corner of this tract just south of the 46 acres of land he had obtained from Thomas Bayly from the east end of A99. The 60 acres part of his land inherited was the southwest corner of the tract, and it was that, as 72 acres by survey, which he traded to Thomas Bayly, which resulted in the latter owning the western half of the tract and Daniel and Smith Melson between them the eastern half.9
