Anecdote*18 December 1752 Near the courthouse was the prison, which seemed to need even more repairs than the courthouse. Between 1744 and 1752, the county spent 4233 lbs tobacco on the prison and its accouterments. Aside from general repairs (most of which-worth 2650 lbs tobacco-were made by Robins Barns), George Cutler was paid 100 lbs for making four pair of handcuffs and putting them on the prisoners; for another 10 lbs he mended a prison bar. In 1752, Cutler, Smith Bunting and Jona. Edmonds were paid a total of 380 lbs tobacco for making more irons for the inmates. That same year Joseph Wimbrough constructed a whipping post, a pillory and a set of stocks for 100 lbs tobacco.1
