Mrs. Clara Jane Sterling, 95, of Crisfield died on November 27th in McCready Hospital after a long illness. She was born in Crisfield, daughter of the late Leon and Eliza Ward Sterling. Her first husband Earl Mears, died in 1907, her second husband, Cope Sterling died in 1935. She was a member of the Crisfield Church of God and she is survived by two sons, Earl Mears and Leon Sterling, two daughters, Mrs. Miles Rhodes, Mrs. Vesta Dorman, one brother, Carroll Sterling, all of Crisfield; twelve grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, 12 great-great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Thursday, at 2 p.m. in the Hinman Funeral Home. Rev. James Cauldwell officiated, assisted by Rev. Donald Corbin. Interment was in Asbury Cemetery. The Crisfield Times, Crisfield, Maryland, December 1, 1978, p. 11.1

In 1932 he was elected to the State House of Representatives and re-elected in 1934 and 1936 in North Dakota. Services were conducted in the Charles Wesley Burns Methodist Church of Mandan by Rev. Walter E. Vater, Bismark, ND. State Govnernor John Moses was a pallbearer. Interment was in the Mandan Union Cemetery. Survivors included a widow, one daughter, Mother Olivia Martin Godwin, Washington, DC, 2 brothers, 5 sisters and an Aunt, Mrs. Harry A. Lewis, of Painter (E.S. News, 13 Sep 1940)..1
