Born June 24, 1924 in Saxis, he was a son of the late Oscar and Lennie Evans. Mr. Evans served his country in the United States Army, was a member of the Saxis Holiness Church and was a longtime waterman in the Saxis community. In addition to his wife, Betty, survivors include three children, Frances Parks Kelly and husband Sonny of Saxis, Sharon Evans Hewett and husband Larry of Ash, NC and Curtis Glenn Evans and wife Mary Josephine of Sanford, VA; a sister, Marguerite Burgess of Chincoteague, VA; ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Other than his wife, Manie, and parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Mister and Eliza Martin and three brothers, Raymond, Sherwood and Weston Evans. Funeral services will be conducted from the chapel of the Saxis Holiness Church on Monday, April 30, 2012 at 3:00 pm with the Reverend Robert Daniels officiating. Interment will follow in the Liberty Cemetery. Visitation will be held hour our prior to the service at the church.7,1

Milit-Beg*Charles was a member of the armed forces serving at US Army, World War II. Mr. Charles Moore of the US Army is visiting his wife and brother at Saxis (Pen. Ent., 9 Apr 1943). Mrs. Charles Moore of Saxis has been notified by the War Department that PFC Charles Moore has been wounded in action somewhere in France. Charles J. Moore, of Saxis, has been award the Bronze Star Medal, for outstanding service during the war. After leaving training at Fort McClellan, Ala, Pvt. Moore was transferred to the 76th Division and later was sent overseas where he joined the 79th Division 315th Infantry. He was wounded near St. Lo and, after being hospitalized about 6 months was discharged 24 Mar 1945. The citation accompanying the medal reads, "This is to certify by direction of the President of the United States of America, under the provisions of . . . , a Bronze Star Medal is awarded to Private Charles T. Moore, A.S.N. 33521443, 315th Infantry for meritorious achievement in Ground Operations on or about 18 Jun 1944 in the European Theatre of Operation.".4

Biography*The infant son of Elliott Paige and Arinthia Spence of Saxis died at Memorial Hospital Nassawadox, Wednesday, 28 May 1952. A graveside service was held in Ellis Cemetery, Saxis, Friday, 30 May at 9:30 am by the Rev. Herbert Hall (Pen. Ent., 5 Jun 1952). Naming Arinthia Spence as the mother was an obvious error as Arinthia was Paige's mother. His wife was Nan Earl Holden.

Biography*circa 1829Maria Spence's birth circa 1828 is based on the 1850 Census. However, a marriage record showed her birth as 1834. Her marriage to a Crockett about 1855 is based on her daughter Miranda "Amanda" being listed as a Crockett in the 1860 household of Maria's father John Spence. Maria was in the 1860 household of Robert Marshall, who she married in 1858, with a son James W. Marshall, age 2, and George W. Marshall, age 5 months. The 1931 obituary of this son George W., later referred to as William R. Marshall, listed Amanda Miles as a surviving sister. Amanda Spence, daughter of Maria Spence, married Severn J. Miles in 1874. Maria must have died before 1880 as her husband, Robert Marshall, was listed as a widower.

Biography*Mr. Frank Fletcher Linton, formerly of Sanford, now of Newport News, died on 7 Feb 1943, aged 42 years, buried at Feddeman Cemetery, survivors were listed (Pen. Ent., 12 Feb 1943). A native of Saxis and a barber. Services were at the Sanford Methodist Church by Rev. Bryan (E.S. News, 12 Feb 1943). Evidently he was moved from the Feddeman Cemetery as his is now buried at Downing's Cemetery.

Fisher near Ewell & Abbott's store, Persimmon Point, 1 miles east of Mappsville..2,3
