Birth*circa 1590Temperance was born circa 1590 at Hethersett, County Norfolk, England.1
Marriage*29 April 1609She married Richard Barrow on 29 April 1609 at St. Gregory at St. Paul's, London, England.1
Married Name29 April 1609 As of 29 April 1609,her married name was Barrow.
Anecdote*June 1609 Temperance sailed for Virginia in June 1609, a passenger on the Faulcon, which had a more successful voyage than the Seaventure, arriving at Jamestown in August 1609. Perhaps her husband, Richard Barrow, was on the Seaventure in this same expedition, and was drown during a hurricane as there is no record of him arriving at Jamestown.1,3,2
Marriage*circa 1613She married Sir George (1) Yeardley, son of Ralph Yeardley and Rhoda Marston, circa 1613 at Jamestown, VA. The Yeardleys went back to England but returned to Virginia in 1619, arriving in mid April. Since Sir George Yeardley was then Virginia's new governor, the houshold resided in urban Jamestown..4,2
Married Namecirca 1613 As of circa 1613,her married name was Yeardley.
Anecdote1622 On 10 March 1622 Lady Temperance Yeardley witnessed the will made by John Rolfe, who also lived in Jamestown. When a census of the colony's inhabitants was complied on 16 Feb 1624, Lady Temperance, Sir George, and two of their children (Argoll and Elizabeth) were residing in Jamestown in a household that included a substantial number of servants. When a muster was compiled on 24 Jan 1625, the Yeardley household was still residing in urban Jamestown and included the couples three children (Argoll, Elizabeth and Francis) and 24 servants, eight who were African. Lady Temperance seems to have been a women of considerable intelligence, for she took a relatively active role in her household's business affairs. In Sept 1625, when Captain Jones's African servant was a member of her household, the Governor's Council ordered her to pay him 40 lbs tobacco for his work. In January 1627 one of the Yeardleys' servants negotiated with John Upton (a newly freed indentured servant) about renting Lady Temperance's land at Black Point. Although court records indicate that the land was Lady Temperance's, in fact she and Sir George and purchased it in 1625. This raises the possibliity that she was managing his financial affairs because he had become seriously ill. On 12 Oct 1627, when Sir George Yeardley made his will, he left his wife Temperance, life-rights to the dwelling they occupied in Jamestown and all of its contents. The rest of his personal and real estate was to be liquidated and divided into three equal shares, with Lady Temperance receiving a third. On 29 Oct 1627, when Sir George Yeardley added a codicil to his will, he asked that his wife sell his land and houses on Jamestown Island. He died shortly thereafter. On 16 Nov 1627, Lady Temmperance Yeardley renounced her dower interest in Flowerdew Hundred and Weyanoke, properties her late husband had sold to Abraham Peirsey. By 8 Feb 1628, Lady Temperance had begun settling her late husband's estate and making arrangements to sell his property. Even before she commenced serving as executrix, she sued to collect debts that were owed to Sir George. In Feb and Mar 1628 she surrendered the cattle that were part of the governor's stipend and asked for an accounting of Southhampton Hundred's finances. Lady Temperance Yeardley married interim Governor Francis West in late March 1628. Because she had not finished settling Sir George Yeardley's estate, his brother, Ralph, was named administrator. On 1 Feb 1630, Francis West, as Temperance's widower and heir, brought suit against Ralph Yeardley in an attempt to recover his late wife's dower share of Sir George Yeardley's estate, which West claimed was worth as least £3,000 and included land, servants, tobacco and other goods.2
