Birth*circa 1826Avera was born circa 1826 at Worcester Co, MD.1
Anecdote*1827 Hannah (Marshall) Ellis could have been pregnant with her husband William Ellis made his will on 13 Sep 1825, but was not aware of it before he died in Octobert 1825, and he did not make a codicil providing for the unborn child. If Hannah had just become pregnant with Avery in September 1825, then he could have been born as late as June of 1826. The guardianship actions involving Hannah Ellis and her other children took place as late as February 1827, so it is unclear why Avery was not mentioned. He must have been the male under five living with Hannah Ellis in 1830.3
Land sold*24 May 1847He sold land on 24 May 1847 at tract Poor Hall, Pitt's Creek Hundred, Worcester Co, MD. Avery J. Ellis of Worcester County sold his interest in the tract of land called "Poor Hall" to Jesse Ellis, the land having been the estate of their father, William Ellis, deceased. A similar deed was found for Matilda Ann Ellis selling her right to Jesse Ellis on 23 Jan 1846.4
Biography*He was listed as Avery in the 1850, 1860 and 1880 Census. However, he was listed as Aaron in the 1870 Census (?). What is believed to be the record of his first marriage to Eliza A. Marshall, daughter of Aaron Marshall, is on p. 46 of Somerset County Marriage Records (1796-1871), transcribed. The husband's first name is dashed implying the compilier could not read the name. This is quite likely, considering his name was Avara. The wife is listed as Eliza Marshall. The date fits with the facts that neither Eliza nor Avery were married in the 1850 Census (they were both living with Aaron Marshall) and their first child, James M. Ellis, was born circa 1852. In a deed dated 7 May 1853, Avery Ellis and his wife Elizer, sold 1.5 acres for $185 to Thomas Marshall, son of Robert, all of Saxes Island, bounded on the North by Stephen Linton, on the East by Edward Pecor, on the South by Absalom Lewis, and on the West by Henry C. Linton (Acc Deeds No. 39, 1853-1855, p. 11). In a deed dated 5 Nov 1853, Avery Ellis paid Thomas E. Marshall $60 for 2 acres of land on Saxes Island, bounded on the North by William Linton, on the East by Sanford Charity, on the South and West by Thos. E. Marshall (Acc Deeds No. 39, 1853-1855, p. 163). In a deed dated 3 May 1861, Avery Ellis purchased from James H. Fletcher and Corbin D. Fletcher 1 & 1/2 acres bounded on the north and west by Pocomoke Sound; east, James Marshall; south, Thomas Marshall; for $125. There was personal property put up as security and payments later (Acc Deeds No. 42, 1860-1862, p. 529). Mr. Avery Ellis died on Sykes Island, on 14 Oct 1895 of kidney troubles, aged 70 years (Pen. Ent., 2 Nov 1895).
Census w/another*1850Avera was listed with another family in the census of in 1850 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as Avery Ellis, a 24 year old laborer in HH#802 headed by Aaron Marshall, a 58 year old farmer with real estate valued at $500. This was on Saxis Island..5
Marriage*August 1851He married Eliza A. Marshall, daughter of Aaron Marshall Sr. and Matilda 'Tinny' Fisher, in August 1851 at Somerset Co, MD.6
Census*1860He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1860 at Saxis Island, Acc Co, VA.7
Marriage*13 February 1867He married Margaret E. Marshall, daughter of Denard Marshall and Elizabeth J. Spence, on 13 February 1867 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as Avara Ellis, a 39 year old widowed oysterman, born in Worcester Co, MD & living in Acc Co, the son of Avara Ellis and she was shown as Margaret E. Marshall, age 19, the daughter of Dennard & Eliz'th Marshall. They were married by J.E. Bundick..8
