Land deed named in*21 May 1828He was named in a deed on 21 May 1828 at Wallops Road, between Bloxom & Garatha, Accomack Co, VA. Bridget Custis sold 100 acres on Wallops Road (which she owned in fee simple) to Elizabeth Savage, wife of John Savage (of Rich'd), James Justice (of Ralph) and Catharine Mears, wife of Thomas Mears. It was bounded by Keziah Laws on the S.E. and on the E by James Fox & Sally Ling, on the NE by Sally Ling & John Savage and on the NW by Tinney White & James Justice. Whereas Bridget Custis is seized in right of dower of land devised to Elizabeth Savage by her father to contain 33 acres, in another tract devised as aforesaid (by his father) to James Justice containing 20 acres and a tract devised to Sinah Core of 33 acres, and also in 3 other tracts owned by Thos. S. Bayly in right of his wife (who was Ann Justice of Ralph), Tinny White and Polly Savage, also another tract belonging to the heirs of Henry Custis dec'd. Bridget Custis, for $500 paid by John Savage, James Justice and Thos Mears, do sell unto Eliza Savage, James Justice and Catherine Mears the described lands as follows: (1) to James Justice 30 acres at the NW corner of the lands I own in fee simple & right of dower in lands of James Justice & in lands of Sinah Core & half of my interest in lands of Henry Custis dec'd, (2) to Elizabeth Savage 15 acres on the NE side of tract from James Justice to Wallops Road and my dower right in the lands of Elizabeth Savage and half of my interest in the land of Henry Custis dec'd, (3) to Catherine Mears the remainder of my land supposed to be 50 acres and my dower rights in lands of Thomas S. Bayly and Polly Savage and Tinny White. Witt: John Jackson, Levi Core & George Warner. Signed: Bridget 'X' Custis. (NOTE: The 3 primary recipients Elizabeth Savage, Catherine Mears & James Justice were her children by her first husband Ralph Justice. Thos. S. Bayly married her step-daughter Ann Justice, Sinah Core was another step-daughter, but supposed dec'd by this date, Tinny White was a daughter of her step-son William Justice and Polly Savage was a daughter of her step-daughter Polly Justice, which explains why Bridget had a dower interest in lands they all inherited from her first husband Ralph Justice.)8

Custis guardian to my son James H. & Elizabeth Justice. Witt: John C. Northam, George T. Moore & James J. Fletcher. (NOTE: It is not clear how he was related to Ann Miles, wife of Parker Miles of Saxes Island. Ann's son Jesse Miles' death certificate shows him as a son of Ann Justice. It is interesting that in his will James Justice repeats the statement "to my 3 children named in this will" three times, implying there may be other children not named in the will. He was age 43 when he married Sally Conquest. He would have been age 25 when Ann Miles was born circa 1815, but she was shown as Ann Tyler when she married Parker Miles in 1835.)1
Death*before 28 March 1848James died before 28 March 1848 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that his will was probated. James W. Anecdote1 January 1901 On 1 January 1901, Alfred D. Young and wife Susan J. joined Henry C. Marshall and wife Henrietta T; Franklin P. Mears and wife Mary A; and Nehemiah M. Bloxom and wife Sally L., in selling 69 acres near Nelsonia to Asa J. Bundick for $1,800 (Acc Co Deeds 76, p. 230). The deed. states this was land Mary Bloxom owned when she died and this would be her children and their spouses selling it. Asa J. Bundick bought an additional, adjoining 19 acres from the same people on 29 July 1901 for $600 (Acc Co Deeds 77, p. 85).
Anecdote22 October 1904 Descendants of Alfred D. Young tell that his farm was the one near Mears on which Garland Gladding presently lives. It is on route 687, just north of Wessells Cemetery, as this road continues to Hallwood. It appears to be the farm on which Alfred D. Young's father, David Young, was farming in 1850. While the present house, with a garage and other out-buildings across the road, is of more modern construction, there is a much older house on the farm, facing the road after it makes a right angle turn. There is a graveyard in the field across the road from it in which Northams are buried (no stones).
On 22 October 1904, Alfred D. Young and wife Susan J., sold the northern part of their farm, to their son Frank P. Young for $400 (Acc Co Deeds 82, p. 208). On 31 December 1910, they sold the remaining 19 acres to Clarence L. Taylor for $3,500 (Acc Co Deeds 96, p. 420). Family members tell that Alfred D. Young and his wife moved to Hallwood after their family was grown and they sold the farm.
