Birth*3 September 1809Thomas was born on 3 September 1809 at Accomack Co, VA.3
Biography*Thomas Bayly Cropper was a sea captain and participant in the California Gold Rush of the 1850s. Cropper commanded a number of transatlantic merchant ships. Between 1832 and 1838 he sailed out of Philadelphia on the Montezuma, the Algonquin, and the Susquehanna from the spring of 1838 through 1848, he sailed out of New York on the Columbus, the New York, and the West Point at least after 1838, and perhaps earlier, he was employed by Charles H. Marshall of New York.4
Marriage*1 April 1843He married Rosina Mix on 1 April 1843 at New York City, New York Co, New York. He was shown as Capt. Thomas B. Cropper and she as Rosina Mix..2
Census head*29 August 1850Thomas was listed as a head of household in the census of 29 August 1850 at 18th Ward, New York City, New York Co, NY. HH#677 was headed by Thos. B. Cropper, a 40 year old ship master with real estate valued at $8,000 born in Virginia. Listed with him were Rosina Cropper, age 29, born in NY; Cath. Cropper, age 6, born in NY; Rosina Cropper, age 4, born in NY; John Cropper, age 1/12, born in NY; Margaret Digman, age 20, born in Ireland; Bridget Digman, age 18, born in Ireland.5
Death*2 March 1855He died on 2 March 1855 at San Francisco, San Francisco Co, CA, at age 45. Capt Thomas Bayly Cropper married Rosina Mix, daughter of Elisha Mix and Elizabeth Burbridge/Burbidge, on April 1, 1843 in New York City, NY. Their children included Thomas Henry, John, Rosina Mix and Katherine Elizabeth. A manifest with him as Master of the Ship New York arriving in NY from Liverpool on November 16, 1844 is found to include his family. His children were well traveled, and his daughter Katherine lived in France, Switzerland and lastly Rome for an extended period of time, where she died. Her siblings John and Rosina also traveled to Rome for an extended period of time with her. Thomas purchased this lot for his family at Green-Wood on Sept 8, 1849. His address at the time was 63 16th Street, New York. His original date of burial is noted as Oct 19, 1855, as is that of his young son Thomas Henry who died in 1850, transferred here from the New York Marble Cemetery in Manhattan. His date of birth and death are based on a pedigree found in the Colonial Wars Registers of Connecticut Men commencing from John Cropper, his son, under the section of Lynd Harrison No 24 Gen 565 pg 53-55. On October 18, 1855, a notice was published of his death in San Francisco which reflected it happened in April though the cemetery records indicate the date above. His burial was so delayed due to having to be sent from San Francisco to New York. His son John died in 1906 leaving a widow, Anne McLane Cropper. His daughter Katherine Elizabeth died in Rome in 1930 and her remains were shipped back for burial here. His daughter Rosina Mix died in Geneva, Switzerland in 1921 but not record of her return for burial here has been found. Apparently neither Rosina nor Anne's remains were sent back to the US for burial, though Anne had indicated she desired to be buried with her husband in the affidavit shortly after Katherine's burial. Birth*7 April 1820Rosina was born on 7 April 1820 at New York.1
Marriage*1 April 1843She married Capt. Thomas Bayly Cropper, son of Gen. John Cropper Jr. and Catherine (269) Bayly, on 1 April 1843 at New York City, New York Co, New York. He was shown as Capt. Thomas B. Cropper and she as Rosina Mix..2
Married Name1 April 1843 As of 1 April 1843,her married name was Cropper.
Census w/husband*29 August 1850Rosina was listed with her husband in the census of 29 August 1850 at 18th Ward, New York City, New York Co, NY. HH#677 was headed by Thos. B. Cropper, a 40 year old ship master with real estate valued at $8,000 born in Virginia. Listed with him were Rosina Cropper, age 29, born in NY; Cath. Cropper, age 6, born in NY; Rosina Cropper, age 4, born in NY; John Cropper, age 1/12, born in NY; Margaret Digman, age 20, born in Ireland; Bridget Digman, age 18, born in Ireland.3
Death*11 February 1864She died on 11 February 1864 at Manhattan, New York Co, NY, at age 43. Daughter of Elisha Mix and Elizabeth Burbridge of Connecticut with extended ancestry there and back to Treats, Websters, Turners, etc. based on pedigrees found in the Colonial Wars Registers of Connecticut Men commencing from John Cropper, her son, under the section of Lynd Harrison No 24 Gen 565 pg 53-55. She married Thomas Bayly Cropper on April 1, 1843 in New York City. They had 4 known children: Thomas Henry, John, Katherine Elizabeth and Rosina M(ix?). All but Rosina are buried together here. Rosina was 34 and single in the 1880 census living with brother John and sister Katherine and Mathilda Vaughn, buried here also, was their servant. Mathilda died of cancer at the age of 48 y 10 m 4 d. Her last residence was 67 East 14th, New York. New Ancestry records document that daughter Rosina Cropper died in Geneva, Switzerland on October 23, 1921, while living in Rome. Her sister Katherine took control of remains and effects but it seems she was never sent home for burial with the family here. Thomas Bayly was a sea captain, as a manifest with him as Master of the Ship New York arriving in NY from Liverpool on November 16, 1844 is found to include his family. His children were well traveled, and his daughter Katherine lived in France, Switzerland and lastly Rome for an extended period of time, where she died. He purchased this lot for his family at Green-Wood on Sept 8, 1849. His address at the time was 63 16th Street, New York. His original date of burial is noted as Oct 19, 1855, as is that of his young son Thomas Henry who died in 1850, probably transferred here from another cemetery in Manhattan. Their son John died in 1906 leaving a widow, Anne McLane Cropper. Her daughter Katherine Elizabeth died in Rome in 1930 and her remains were shipped back for burial here. Her daughter Rosina Mix was last known to be living in on July 1, 1907 when she cabled the cemetery from Rome regarding a vault remodel. She died prior to Feb 11, 1931, according to an affidavit filed by Anne McLane Cropper, widow of John, while she was living in Paris. Apparently neither Rosina nor Anne's remains were sent back to the US for burial, though Anne had indicated she desired to be buried with her husband. It is not known whether Rosina ever married, but it is probably unlikely. Based on the cemetery records, this Mix/Cropper line ended with her children. Rosina exchanged letters with her first cousin, John William Burbridge of Walterboro, SC through the mid 1800's. The letters she received make up the Rosina Mix Papers in the Southern History Collection at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Trail. They were quoted in the book "Becoming Bourgeois: Merchant Culture in the South, 1820-1865 (New Directions in Southern History)" by Frank J Byrne. The collection of letters can be viewed online at this link: http://www2.lib.unc.edu/mss/inv/m/Mix,Rosina.html It is interesting because John is the only family member who moved to the South from his original roots in Connecticut and fought on the Confederate side in the Civil War.
