Birth*12 August 1922Emmett was born on 12 August 1922.
Death*17 November 2017He died on 17 November 2017 at Temperanceville, Accomack Co, VA, at age 95. Emmett Garner Taylor, Jr., 95, of Temperanceville, VA, husband of Jackie Taylor, passed away on November 17, 2017 at his residence. Born on August 12, 1922 on the family farm, he was the son of the late E.G. Taylor, Sr. and Mary Frances Gordy. Emmett spent his early years enjoying farm life and learning from his father. Later, Emmett graduated from Virginia Tech and their ROTC program. He then served in the US Army in WWII in Germany where he attained the rank of Captain and was awarded two Bronze Stars. After the war, Emmett came home where he devoted his life to the family farm, which has been owned by the Taylor Family since 1657. He expanded the farming operation and acreage throughout his life. Emmett loved the water and boating from childhood until very late in life, and one of his great joys was the Suzy-Tee, his sport fishing boat. There were countless off-shore fishing adventures, and family trips such as a trip to the 1964 World’s Fair in New York and Summers spent in Ocean City, MD. Another special part of his life was his beloved Cessna 172 airplane which he was always finding reasons to use. Other than his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Suzanne Taylor Alexander of Salisbury; two sons, William Maxwell Taylor of Los Angeles and Thomas Wharton Taylor of Temperanceville; three step-children, Jan April Grody, Donald Robert Grody and Shirlee Jean Grody; a sister, Betsy Ann Taylor Barnes of Mobile, Alabama; Grandchildren, Susan Kimberley Leverage, Jennifer Taylor Campbell, Morgan Dennis Taylor, Christopher Jon Taylor, Alison Jane Taylor, Lauren Grace Taylor, Edward William Taylor, Thomas Wharton Taylor, Jr; and 8 great-grandchildren. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Jane Taylor Pollitt. A memorial service will be conducted Monday, December 18th at 11:00 AM at the Atlantic Volunteer Fire Company where Emmett was a Founding Member. The Reverend Andrew Matthews will officiate. Lunch will follow the service and we welcome family and friends to join in a celebration and remembrance of Emmett’s life. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Atlantic Volunteer Fire and Rescue,10071 Atlantic Road, Atlantic, VA 23303 or Riverside Hospice, P.O. Box 615, Onley, VA 23418. Arrangements are by the Thornton Funeral Home in Parksley.
