In Consideration of Which Service the Said Mathias Benston present here in Court in his Proper Person Covenanteth with the Justices of the Same Court in Court Judicially Sitting in Manner and form following that is to Say that he the Said Mathias Benston Shall and Will during the term afd. Learn his Said Apprentice the trade of a house Carpinter and to Read Write and Cypher as far as the Rule of Division Inclusive and at the Expiration of his Servitude Give him a New Suit of Cloaths of Kersey or Narrow Broad Cloath Over and above his Common wearing Cloaths and Likewise find and provide for his Said Apprentice Meat drink washing Lodging and Cloathing Sufficient for Such an Apprentice to have and wear during the term afd. Whereupon the Said Mathias Benston is ordered to Give Security to Comply with the Covenants afd. Thereupon the Said Mathias Benston with Wm. Benston and Wm. Smith his Securitys all present here in Court in his proper person Acknowledged themselves Indebted unto the afd. Riley Slocum in the Sum of thirty Pounds Curt Money of Maryland of their bodys Goods or Chattles Lands and tenements Joyntly and Severally to be made and Levied if it happen that the Said Mathias Benston do not during the term afd. Smith pretended that Benston took this sow and other hogs from Smith's land, but Francis and Mary swore that this sow and other shoats belonging to William Benston came home by themselves. In 1776 William Bratten (wife Sophia) left to his sons Nehemiah and James, but the former was to have it all if the paid James £36, which apparently he did, as Nehemiah appeared as the owner, after the turn of the century. The name sometimes was spelled Braughten.2 
Will*3 February 1776William made a will on 3 February 1776 at Accomack Co, VA. In his will William Bratten gave to wife Sophia all my land during her widow & then to my sons Nehemiah Bratten & James Bratten.
