Birth*13 October 1920John Almer Goffigon III was born on 13 October 1920 at Delaware. On 23 Aug 2017 Dan Goffigan noted that his still living grandma (Antoinette Goffigan) and his father stated that John Almer Goffigan III was born in Delaware on 13 Oct 1920. While my Great Grandma was in labor or close to it, my Great Grandfather (John Almer Goffigan Jr.) wanted his "son born on Virginia soil". So, he loaded her up in New York and began traveling towards the Eastern Shore. Well, they didn't make it to Virginia and John Almer Goffigan III was born in Delaware!2,3

He saw significant combat (documented in what remains of his journal, located with Dan's Uncle Dennis) on the USS Monssen (DD-436). Furthermore, the USS Monssen was sunk during the Battle of Guadalcanal. My Grandfather survived the sinking and treading water for a long period of time (many of his shipmates were taken by the elements or sharks). He was one of the few survivors that was rescued sometime later.3
