Court - namd in suit*27 May 1762He was named in a lawsuit on 27 May 1762 at Accomack Co, VA. Partners Eyre, Bowdoin & Smith (attorney: Littleton Dennis) sued George Topping, who failed to appear. Isaac Smith swore to the account; they were to recover £4:10:04 ½ plus costs (CaSa: 28 May 1762).1

The churchwardens of St George’s Parish brought action against John Topping as the putative father of the child with which Rebecca Kelly (single woman) was pregnant. Topping and his security (Jno Hannaford) each posted a £50:00:00 bond to ensure that Topping did not leave the county and that he would appear “from term to term” till the child was born. He was to abide other orders that the court might make and be on his good behavior.1

Topping, who posted the bond with John West as security, was also to pay court costs of 271 lbs tobacco.2

Anecdote*circa 1860 A replica of the oyster boat, the William H. Van Name, that carried oysters from the York River to N.Y., was built by Capt. Tom Kenny using a pen knife to carve the sails and boat. The background is the fort at Port Richmond, Staten Island, N.Y. It was given to Capt. Cornelius Corson (1830-1896) about 1860. Ninety years later it was given to John R. Chandler (1921-1996) of Onancock, by his grandmother Sarah Maria Corson Hogg (1867-1954), who was Capt. Corson's daughter. In 2017 it was purchased by William Hogg Chandler Jr., a great-great grandson of Capt. Cornelius Corson.
