Death*18 June 1917He died on 18 June 1917 at Columbia, Richland Co, SC, at age 83. Robert E. Lee hired Prof. Joynes to teach at Washington College (now Washington and Lee University) after the Civil War. He was a noted scholar and textbook author. According to J. Wm. Joynes he was clerk of the Confederate War Department, author of textbooks translated from Latin, French and Greek, professor in various colleges in Virginia, Tennessee and South Carolina, including William & Mary in Williamsburg (where in the Wren Building his name appears on a marble plaque honoring professors and students who fought for the Confederacy). He also helped organize Withrop College for women in Rock Hill, SC.1,2 
Burial*Edward was buried at Elmwood Memorial Gardens, Columbia, Richland Co, SC. Inscription: Scholar, Teacher, Author, Professor University of S.C. 1882, Emertius 1908, One of the founders of Columbia City Schools and of Winthrop College.1

In his will Levin Joynes gave to wife Ann the use of my respective children's legacies until my sons arrive at 14 years of age & my daughters at 18 years or marriage. To son John Joynes the plantation where I now live containing by estimation 318 acres & for want of issue to my son Levin Joynes. To son Levin Joynes the land I hold under 2 several deeds from Thomas Grinalds & John Smith, together with 34 acres purchased of the heirs of Clement Parker, Jr., & for which no deed has been executed, containing in the whole 334 acres, & for want of heirs to my son Thomas Robinson Joynes. Should Levin inherit the land devised my son John, in that case this divident of land shall likewise go to my son Thomas Robinson & his heirs. In his will John Rogers gave to wife Ann Rogers the use of one half of my land during her natural life. At her death I give the same to my daughter Susanna. I give and bequeath to my daughter Susanna Rogers all the remainder of my estate. In case my said daughter Susanna should die under lawful age and without issue I then give all that I here give her unto my brother Robert Rogers' children. I desire that my wife have the use of one half of my still and the appurtenances during her life to distill her own liquor in and that the said still may be set up on my land if she should think proper.
