Death*6 March 1884He died on 6 March 1884 at California at age 70. He was a surveyor and brother of John Thomas. Richard Thomas came to Mariposa County in 1852 from Virginia with his brother, Capt. John W. Thomas. The Thomas Brothers were the main support for their three sisters back in Virginia. John Thomas was a Mariposa County Supervisor from 1860 to 1863. John was also a carpenter and cabinetmaker. He died August 23, 1882, leaving his wife with his family in Virginia. Richard Thomas was elected County Surveyor almost continuously from 1859 to 1884. He also held the position of United States Deputy Mineral Surveyor of Mariposa County. He lived with Green Coop and his brother in 1870. On March 6, 1884, Richard Thomas was traveling home from doing survey work in the lower portion of the county when he attempted to cross the swollen waters of Bear Creek. He and his wagon were swept down stream where he perished. The accident happened at the crossing of Bear Creek on the main road about one mile west of Andrew Zinkand's toll house and residence. R. B. Thomas was 71 years of age at the time of his death.2
Burial*Richard was buried at Mariposa Masonic Cemetery, Mariposa Co, California. His tombstone shows him as R.B. Thomas, 22 July 1813 - 6 Mar 1884. From Va.2
