Biography*In an interview with her grand duaghter, Lovie (Bonawell) Marshall, in 1977, she (Matilda Emily) was identified as a daughter of John Spence. It should be noted that, Lovie was born almost 30 years after Matilda's death and Lovie's information was based on what she was told by her mother Amanda "Mendie." However, it does tend to substantiate the Acc death record. However, the other option is that Matilda was the 10-15 year old daughter of Aaron Marshall, Sr. in the 1840 Census. She would have been 14 in the 1840. This assumption is based on two facts: 1) Revel J. Lewis, 27, and wife Matilda, 24, were living next door to "Dennard" Marshall in 1850 (Denard was the first son of Aaron Marshall, Sr.) and 2) Revel J. Lewis married Elishia A.M. Marshall on 29 Jan 1845 (Acc Mar Reg #1, p. 75). There are several possibilities that could explain this conflict. One would be that Revel J. Lewis married Elishia Marshall, daughter of Aaron, in 1845, she died very shortly thereafter and he then married Matilda Spence later that year. The timing would have had to have been that close, because their first child, Amanda "Mendie" was born 16 Mar 1846. The other possibility would be that Matilda's full name would have been Elishia A. Matilda Spence and that she married a Marshall, who died, and then she married Revel J. Lewis in 1845, and was listed on the marriage record by her married name instead of her maiden name. However, both of these possibities involve other marriages by either Matilda or Revel and neither of them has been found. As far as tracing all the descendants of the Bayside Marshall's are concerned, it makes little difference because in either case the descendants of Revel and Matilda are included. This is because Revel himself was the grandson of Samuel Marshall, Sr. (through his mother "Milly" Marshall, daughter of Samuel, Jr., son of Samuel, Sr.) and Matilda, if she were a daughter of Aaron Marshall, would have been also been a grand daughter of Samuel Marshall, Sr. (through her father Aaron, son of James, son of Samuel, Sr.) If Matilda was the daughter of Aaron, she would have married her 2nd cousin, Revel Lewis.

Death*18 October 1856Matilda died on 18 October 1856 at Accomack Co, VA. She was shown as Mitild Lewis, who died at the age of 30 years. She was the daughter of John Spence and the wife of Revel J. Lewis, who gave the information. The record was filed 9 Jul 1857 (Acc Co Register of Deaths, 1853-70, p. 13, ln. 11)..1

According to his own statement he was 112 years old."9
Anecdote20 November 1888 According to the Richmond Dispatch of this date, the news from Onancock, November 17, 1888 - Captain John Spence, the oldest inhabitant of Accomack county, died several days ago at his home on Sykes's Island. His exact age is not known, but from documentary evidence in his posession he could not have been less than one hundred and seven years old. Captain Spence contented that he was one hundred and twelve years old, having been born, as he claimed, in 1776, the year of American independence. He cliamed that, omitting the election of 1808, he had voted in twenty-one presidential elections, his first vote having been cast in 1797 and for Thomas Jefferson in 1800. This beats the record of Colonel Charlton, whose death at his home in Montgomery county at an advanced old age was recently reported in the Dispatich, and who is said to have voted in nineteen presidential elections. Sykes's Island, Captain Spence's home, is the banner Democrate precinct in the Sate, having cast 62 votes at the last election - all solid for Cleveland, Thruman and Kendall.10

Biography*Barry was born on Virginia's Eastern Shore on Saxis Island, in Accomack Co, VA, Oct 31, 1940 (Halloween) and died in Washington, NC, April 11, 2018. He moved with his family to Newport News, VA, when he was about 1 year old. His family moved back to Saxis on two different occasions, when he was in the 4th grade and 7th grade. He attended Saxis Elementary School, where grades 1, 2 and 3 were taught in one room by one teacher and grades 4, 5 & 6 were taught in another room by another teacher. He attended the 7th grade at Atlantic High School in Oak Hall, VA, now the location of Arcadia High School.
During his time at Saxis Island, he listened to his grandmother, Rachal O'rella Linton Byrd, talk about the family and conditions of the past. He tried to work some of those stories into his family genealogy. He started his genealogy work after his grandmother died in 1967. In 1970, he took a genealogy class at Thomas Nelson Community College, Hampton, VA, and has pursed this hobby with great passion ever since. He began with an extensive card file system, in his efforts to trace his families. Originally, he was only going to trace his 4 grandparents' lines. He began computer genealogy in 1979 when he purchased an Apple II computer and the program Genealogist's Right Hand. He worked with this and other Apple compatible programs until he and his cousin, M.K. Miles, also of Saxis Island, teamed up to work on their Saxis families using Roots III software about 1978. That was the start of a partnership that lasted 40 years.
He was amazed that he was able to find 25 (out of a possible 32) of his great-great-grand parents, which included one line from Annapolis, MD, that he was not able to trace further back. He was equally amazed by the amount of historical and genealogical information he was able to compile about Saxis and its people. For instance, he found an article in the Peninsula Enterprise, 23 July 1887, written by a drummer boy about Pocomoke Neck and Sykes (Saxis) Island. He was pleasantly surprised when he found that he (and many of today's residents of Saxis Island) could trace his ancestors to a Revolutionary War soldier, some of the first settlers of Virginia's Eastern Shore, English Royalty and the Roman Emperor Charlemagne.
Barry was always a sticker for references and insisted on a source for every piece of information they entered into their MilesFiles database, which is on the Eastern Shore of Virginia Public Library Web Page (http://espl-genealogy.org/MilesFiles/site/index.htm). That's why their database of almost 100,000 names has over 2,500 sources, cited almost 400,000 times.
His hope was that when they were unable to continue their pursuit that someone younger would pick up the quest and continue to expand on their efforts. His cousin, M.K. Miles, who continues to expand the MilesFiles, shares that sentiment.
Barry & M.K. Miles published 8 books together:
1 Tombstones of Upper Accomack County (15,000 inscriptions) (with Mary F. Carey)
2 Marriages of Accomack County (1854-1896)
3 Wills of Accomack County (1800-1860)
4 Civil War Soldiers of the Eastern Shore of Virginia (both black & white)
5-8 Four Volumes of Colonial Families of the Eastern Shore of Virginia
Barry also published 2 books of his own:
9 Cemeteries of the City of Hampton, VA (formerly Elizabeth City County)
10 Cemeteries of the City of Newport News, VA (formerly Warwick County)
They also helped Kirk Mariner publish his 9th Eastern Shore of Virginia history book:
11 Almost An Island, The History of Saxis, Virginia.
