Ralph Thomas Whitelaw1
M, b. 21 September 1880, d. 26 March 1950
Ralph Thomas Whitelaw was born on 21 September 1880 at St. Louis, MO.1 He died on 26 March 1950 at N.A.M. Hospital, Nassawadox, N'hamp Co, VA, at age 69. Death Claims Ralph Whitelaw After Operation - Ralph Thomas Whitelaw, 69, of Accomac, died Sunday morning, March 26, at Memorial Hospital, Nassawadox. The son of Robert H. and Mary Westage Whitelaw, be was born in St. Louis, Missouri, 21 Sep 1880. After attending St. Louis schools he went to Amherst College and was graduated in 1902. While at Amherst he became a member of Psi Upsilon fraternity. Upon graduation he went into business with his father, and his brother, R. Malcolm Whitelaw, carried on the family chemical business founded in 1853, until he retired in 1926. He went to France in World War I, serving in the AEF. He had married Miss Paula Oertel on 1 Apr 1922. There were no children. After his retirement he and Mrs. Whitelaw traveled around, looking for the place where they wanted to live. They chose the Eastern Shore of Virginia, and bought pre-Revolutionary "Warwick" at Quinby, which they restored and made into a charming and most livable home. Mrs. Whitelaw died in 1933 and then he built a home next to "Whispering Pines" at Accomac, where he spent the rest of his life. Technically retired, he remained always a busy man, active in many fields. He helped the Eastern Shore of Virginia Chamber of Commerce and did his part in civilian defense during World War II and last year he was instrumental in re-activating the local branch of the Association of the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities. He was generous in doing favors, but chary in asking them. For the past fifteen years he had devoted himself largely to a study of old homes on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Starting from the papers of the late Thomas Upshur at "Brownsville," Northampton County, he and Miss Anne Floyd Upshur carried on their investigations, accumulating a treasure of material about the Eastern Shore, centered on the old home but extending into various related and associated fields. They collected information on more then two hundred Eastern Shore buildings of the seventeenth, eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. They located eight in Northampton and four in Accomack County dating back in construction to the 1600s. One of these, "Winona," has some claim to being the oldest authenticated brick in America. Mr. Whitelaw pursued this research in Richmond and Washington, D.C., as well as among the local records and on the ground. The material for a book was all but complete at the time of his death. A memorial for Mr. Whitelaw was conducted by Rev. Edwin T. Williams at St. James Episcopal Church, Accomac, Monday, March 27 at 11 o'clock. In accordance with his wishes his remains were cremated and his ashes rest at Ferncliff, Ardsley, N.Y. He was a Congregationalist. Surviving members of the family are his brother, R. Malcolm Whitelaw, of Sarasota, Fla., and three nephews, Eugene S. Wilson, of Amherst, Mass., Robert W. Wilson, of Washington, D.C., and M. Hasley Whitelaw, of Jacksonville, Fla.
Whitelaw Will Makes Generous Bequests to Shore - Library, School and Historical Society Given Valuable Research Files - Out of his affection for the Shore were he spent his latter years, Ralph T. Whitelaw expressed his sentiment through his will dated Oct. 3, 1947 and probated March 28, 1950. In this carefully prepared document he does these things. His writings, records, pictures, maps, etc., relating to the Eastern Shore of Virginia, are willed to the Virginia Historical Society, he wrote: "If within six months after my death, the said Society will contract to edit and publish (but not to have already edited and published) my manuscript under the title, "Virginia's Eastern Shore," I then direct my Executors to pay to said Society the sum of $5,000 towards that purpose." If such possible contract eventuates and after legitimate expenses of the undertaking have been covered by sales of the book it was Mr. Whitelaw's wish that the Society divide semi-annually any profit from the sale, between itself and Miss Anne Floyd Upshur, with whom Mr. Whitelaw worked on the book. After Miss Upshur's death, the Society receives all profits, in any. The executors' responsibility in this matter terminates at the end of six months regardless of what may be done, unless limited time is necessary to complete negotiation then pending and the manuscript goes to the society. To Onancock High School he left his scrap books of clippings, reference books on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, its architecture, furniture, etc., because he felt the Callahan Collection was there and Shore information data should be in one place for the convenience of the public. He lelt his library to the Accawmacke Library at Onancock, subject to the first choice by Miss Upshur of books, etc., she desired. Out side the Shore, he made generous bequests to Amherest College, his Alma Mater, to his fraternity and to relatives and friends. The little house by the side of the road in which he lived will be sold by the executors with first choice for its purchase being offered to Albert Dobson of Whispering Pines.1

Dr. James Selby Sudler was born on 12 July 1831 at Bridgeville, Sussex Co, DE.1 He sold land on 20 September 1854. John Ralston Sudler, the widower of Mary Ann Garrison, and her son James Selby Sudler, both of Sussex Co, DE were paid $500 by James Chapman of Accomack for their rights to the Jonathan Garrison land. It would appear that there were problems in clearing the title to the Garrison land, and by this date James Selby Sudler was the only living descendant of Jonathan Garrison who died in 1812. His father had dower rights to the land through his former wife. Nancy Selby Garrison Penniwill was still alive, but her dower rights had evidently ceased with her remarriage. He married Sarah Ann Hitch, daughter of William Hitch and Miranda Short, on 24 July 1856 at Laurel, Sussex Co, DE.1 Dr. James Selby Sudler died on 1 August 1863 at Bridgeville, Sussex Co, DE, at age 32.
