Samuel Mifflin (Quaker) was born circa 1728 at Accomack Co, VA.2 Samuel was named in his father's will on 7 September 1740 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as son Samuel (under 21) in the will of Edward Mifflin, wife Mary. He was given my plantation in Northern Liberties of Philadelphia near Schoolcill whereon my father John Mifflin lived, containing 270 acres. Whereas there is a dispute with my brothers & sisters children about part of my above given plantation near Philadelphia, which if the recover their claim I desire that my son Samuel Mifflin may have £200 in lieu of what they recover.1 Samuel had a guardian named on 29 May 1744 at Accomack Co, VA. Widow Mary Mifflin was appointed guardian to Samuel Mifflin, Southey Mifflin and Anne Eyre (all minors) to defend them in Daniel Mifflin's suit. On reading the bill, the parties agreed that William Beavans, William Gore, Covington Corbin and John Walker (or three of them) should decide on an equal distribution of the slaves of Edward Mifflin (decd.) and his personal estate. They were also to audit the accounts of administration.2 On 30 Sep 1747 in Acc Co Court the action of Daniel Mifflin vs. Mary, Sam'l, Southey, Miflin & Anne Eyre (dec'd), the previoius division confirmed.3 He married (-----) (-----) circa 1750.4 Samuel Mifflin (Quaker) died before 18 June 1772 at Accomack Co, VA. She was a "sharp" dresser even into her 90's and her favorite color was pink. She was short in stature, with gray hair and beautiful smooth skin. Her first husband was Wesley A. Boxom, Jr. "Bud" who was 26 years older than Odelle. After Bud died, she married Elton B. Guy who was from Cape Charles. Odelle's nickname was "Auntie" as her niece and nephews affectionately called her. She had a Boston terrier named Trixie that she adored. She lived for many years in Wilmington Manor Gardens in New Castle, DE. Odelle was involved with the Eastern Star for many years and Elton was a Shriner so they spent much of their time at the Nur Temple on Route 13 in New Castle, DE. She loved dressing in formal attire and attending the various balls held by the Eastern Shore or Shriners. She read her bible every day and loved to watch Dr. Charles Stanley preach on TV. She was a lifelong Phillies fan and LOVED the Philly Phanatic. She loved playing cards, especially solitaire. She made the best roast beef dinner, butter beans and the 1-2-3 cake with fudge frosting. Her sweet tea was the best. She loved visiting her friend Margaret Belote in Greenbush, VA. She died of congestive heart failure after being discharged from the hospital without her Lasix medication. By the time this mistake was discovered it was too late. Fluid had built up around the heart and lung and she died in Elkton Hospital, Elkton, Maryland. She had an open casket and even in death she looked like an angel…a beautiful 96 year old angel. (Provided by Leilani Walker).2 Odelle was buried at Gracelawn Cemetery, New Castle Co, DE.1

Warner Mifflin (Quaker) was born on 21 August 1745 at Pharsalia, Accomack Co, VA.2 He married Elizabeth Johns, daughter of Kensey Johns and Susanna Galloway, on 14 May 1767 at Philadelphia, PA.2 Warner was named in his grandmother's will on 18 June 1772 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as my grandson Warner Mifflin in the will of Mary Mifflin, widow. He was named as one of the Extrs.3 Warner Mifflin, reformer and prominent member of the Society of Friends, was the eldest son of Daniel and Mary Warner Mifflin. He was born in Accomac County, Va., in 1745, and died at Chestnut Grove, 16th October, 1798. He was the great-great-grandson of John Mifflin, of Warminster, Wiltshire, England, who with his son John came to America prior to 1679. They are first heard of at Burlington, N. J., but subsequently, in 1680, they took up three hundred acres of land on the east bank of the Schuylkill on the Duke of York's patent. This grant was confirmed by William Penn in 1684. The tract was called Fountain Green, and is now part of Fairmount Park. Warner Mifflin was early interested in the slaves, and in a pamphlet entitled " The Defence of Warner Mifflin Against Aspersions cast on him on Account of his endeavours to Promote Righteousness, Mercy and Peace Among Mankind," he gives an interesting account of his conversion to anti-slavery views through a conversation with one of his father's slaves. He " determined never to be a slave-owner." Yet he became possessed of slaves through his wife Elizabeth Johns, and of others, from among his father's, who followed him into Delaware. Convinced, however, that he would " be excluded from happiness if he continued in this breach of the Divine Law " he freed all his slaves in 1774 and 1775, and his father followed his example. Thomas Clarkson, the leader and historian of the anti-slavery movement in England, said of Warner Mifflin that " he was the first man in America to unconditionally emancipate his slaves." From this time until his death his efforts to bring about emancipation were untiring. Through his labors most of the members of his Society liberated their slaves. He traveled from State to State pireaching his anti-slavery doctrines among his people, and in the course of his life visited all the Yearly Meetings on the continent. In 1782 he appeared before the legislature of Virginia, and was instrumental in having a law enacted that admitted of emancipation. In 1783 he presented a memorial to Congress respecting the African slave-trade, and he subsequently visited, in the furtherance of his work, the legislatures of Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware. In 1791 he presented his noted " Memorial to the President, the Senate and the House of Representatives of the United States " on the subject of slavery, and published a short time afterward his " Serious Expostulation with the members of the House of Representatives of the United States," in. relation to the principles of liberty, and the inconsistency and cruelty of the slave-trade and slavery. As a member of the Society of Friends, Warner Mifflin was opposed to war. He was chosen by his people to present their views to Generals Howe and Washington. He traversed the British lines without a passport, and subsequently made his way to General Washington, undaunted by the hatred of the Americans for the Quakers and in danger of being treated as a spy. He also bore testimony in favor of temperance, and consistently with his peace principles refused to handle the continental currency issued in aid of the Revolution. He died of yellow fever, caught while ministering to the victims of the epidemic in Philadelphia.4 He married Ann Emlen (Quaker), daughter of George Emlen and Ann (-----), on 9 October 1788 at Philadelphia, PA.2 Warner Mifflin (Quaker) was named in a land cause on 18 October 1793 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as a son Warner Mifflin in the will of Daniel Mifflin, wife no name. He was given 5 shillings together with what he has already had, which I consider his full proportion of my estate.6 He died on 16 October 1798 at Chesnut Grove, Camden, Kent Co, DE, at age 53. He died of yellow fever.2 Warner was buried at Motherkill Burying Ground, Camden, Kent Co, DE.2 His estate was probated on 17 January 1799.2
