Josias Willis I was born circa 1698 at Northampton Co, VA.2 Josias was named in his father's will on 25 March 1719 at Northampton Co, VA. He was shown as son Josias in the will of George Willis, wife dec'd. He was given 100 acres that came by his mother. He was shown as Josias Willis, son and heir (at law) at probate.2 He married Esther (-----) circa 1720.3 On 17 Nov 1722 John Dillicoat's petition shows that there are two orphan children living with Josias Willis. The children are brother and sister to the said John's wife. He complains that they are muchly abused by Josias and his wife. At the Feb Court William and Leah Moore(sic) (Willis) were put under John Dillicoat's care.4 Josias Willis I was named as the executor of a will on 4 February 1727 at Northampton Co, VA. He was shown as my friend Josias Willis and named Extr in the will of Thomas Ellegood, planter, single person.5 Josias was named in his brother's will on 5 February 1727 at Northampton Co, VA. He was shown as brother Josias Willis in the will of George Willis, single person.6 He was named in a land dispute in October 1727 at Northampton Co, VA. It was on this date that it was recorded that processioners were stopped by Josias Willis in Jan 1725. The line inquestion was a division line between Willis and Matthew Freshwater. No obvious outcome.7 He inherited land in 1728 at tract N41, N of Rd between Chariton & Oyster, N'hamp Co, VA. According to Whitelaw Josias Willis inherited the 100 acres his father gave his brother Goerge, it being the 100 acres bought from the Rues in 1709. So he now had the entire 200 acres.3 In Aug 1728 Josiah Willis petitions that his sister, Leah Wilis is in a languishing condition and is advised by her physician to be salivated. She cannot pay for it unless the Court orders her estate or what is left of it now in the hands of John Dellicote to be delivered to the petitioner or some other of her friends in order to pay the charges. No action shown.8 Josias was named as administrator of an estate on 12 August 1735 at Northampton Co, VA. It was on this date that administration on the estate of Peter Dillicoat was granted to Josias Willis, uncle of the dec'd. Josias Willis petitions that Peter Dellicoat died within age without issue. He asks as nearest of kin (uncle) for administration on the estate.9,10 In May 1737 Jonathan Aleworth's petition shows that John Delicoat (Dillicot) left two children, Peter and Margaret, both now dec'd. Josiah Willis is Admr for Peter's estate and th estate of Margaret in the hands of Elizabeth Delicoat, widow and Admtrx of the above John. The petitioner being next of kin to the said John, prays that the estate of Peter may be ordered out of the hands of Josiah Willis and Margaret's estate out of the hands of Elizabeth Delicoat. Petition-wanted.11 In May 1738 William Burton petitions that Josias Willis owes him 9 barrels and 3 1/2 bushels of Indian corn. A promissory note from Josias Willis, planter, to Jonathan Aleworth Sr. of Accomack County for the said corn is signed over to Burton in April 1738.12 He sold land in 1739 at tract N41, N of Rd between Chariton & Oyster, N'hamp Co, VA. It was in this year that Josias Willis & his wife Esther sold 50 ares at the west end to Major Guy and 3 years later Willis alone sold hiim the 150 acre balance.3 In Jun 1739 the petition of Moses Stripe shows that Josias Willis is indebted to him for £1.13.4 in corn at 20 pence per bushel and refuses payment. The account shows that the debt is for work done for him by agreement. Judgment for the Deft.13 In Aug 1742 Thomas Scott complains that Joseas Willis owes him for 5 3/4 yds checked linen, 1 felt hat adn half of the sugar that was in a molasses cask - £1.12.8 1/2 - Judgment for Plf.14 Josias was named as an heir on 25 March 1745 at Northampton Co, VA. It was on this date that Richard Respes, Henry Smaw, John Richards, Josias Willis and Thomas Downs were named in the will of Major Guy and given all they owe me.15 In Sep 1753 Henry Smaw sues both Leah Madocks and Josias Willes Sr. The said Leah owed for 3 purchases of yard goods. On the other hand the said Josias' account from 1749-51 showed several items of general merchandise but primarily charges for quarts of rum.16 He died between 1772 and 1773 at Northampton Co, VA. He evidently died between 10 Mar 1772 when his son Josias Willis Jr. was named as an appraiser of the estate of Robert Widgeon and 12 Aug 1773 when his son Josias Willis (no longer referred to as Jr.) was named to appraise the estate of Powell Johnson.17,18
