     Capt. Francis (2) Epes was born before 14 May 1597 at Ashford, Co Kent, England. It was on this date that he was baptized.² He was in Virginia by Apr 1625 when he was elected from Shirley Hundred to sit in the Assembly at James City on 10 May ensuing but was missed in both the census of 1623/4 and the muster of 1624/5. Ensign Frances Epes testified 9 Jan 1624/6 in the controversy between Mr. Thomas Paulett and the Rev. Greville Pooley. He was appointed commissioner fo rthe Upper Parts, 8 Aug 1626, and commander of forces with Capt. Thomas Pawlett to attack the Weyanoke and Appomattox Indians, 4 July 1627. There is no record of him in Virginia between 7 March 1628/9 and 21 Feb 1631/2. He probably returned to England with his wife and two sons, for on 8 Sep 1630 "Thomas, son of Francis Eps and Marie was born" in London.² He married Mary 'Marie' (-----) circa 1626.² Back in Virginia, Francis Epes was a member, 1631/2 of the House of Burgesses for Shirley Hundred, Mr. Farrar's and Chaplain. On 26 Aug 1635 as Capt. Francis Epes he was granted 1700 acres in Charles City County on Appoxmattox River, a portion of which tract remained in the family until 1978.² Capt. He also held land on Shirley Hundred Island, now Eppes Island, according to two patents to others.² He consolidated his land, 4 Oct 1668, in a patent for 1980 acres.² He died before 30 September 1674 at Virginia. He was evidently dec'd by this date when his son and heir John Epes renewed the patent in his own name.¹

At a meeting of the militia at Westover, 12 June 1661, it was ordered that a trained band, with addition of horse, report to Fort Henry upon occasion of alarm and there be commanded by Capt. Francis Eps, one of the captains of "the Guards of the Counties." He moved to Henrico County soon after, was a justice there by 4 Feb 1664/5 and served as Burgess, 1670-76. On 27 Oct 1673 Maj. Francis Epes was granted 927 acres, 2 roods and 16 poles of land in Henrico County on the north side of Appomattock River on Swift Creek.² Col. He was shown as Francis Epes, aged 49 or thereabouts and on 20 Aug 1678, that he was aged 50 or thereabouts, and was presumably born in Virginia.² He died before 28 August 1678 at Henrico Co, VA. It was on this date that Elizabeth Epes of Burmodii Hundred, widow, wrote the first of her two wills. On 2 Dec 1678 Mr. Richard Cocke Sr., aged 38, deposed that Col. Francis Epes the day before he died gave his estate to his wife and four children. The same day William Randolph, aged 28, deposed that he at Col. Francis Epes' house one or two days before his death, he being dangerously wounded, and had no time to make a will but that he wanted his estate to go to his wife and four children, and he hoped his brother would seat one of them at Cawsons and that Lanclands would serve one of the boys.³

He was living on the Eastern Shore with his brother William Epes, 16 Feb 1623/4, but seems to have returned to England before the muster of Feb 1624/5.¹ Peter was named in his father's will on 10 August 1625 at Ashford, Co Kent, England. He was evidently in England when his father wrote his will, but no later records of him have been found in England or Virginia.¹

     Elizabeth Littlebury (Littlebury?) was born circa 1635.¹ As of circa 1661,her married name was Epes.¹ She married Col. Francis (7) Epes, son of Capt. Francis (2) Epes and Mary 'Marie' (-----), circa 1661. She was Mrs. Elizabeth Worsham, widow of William Worsham of Henrico County.¹ Elizabeth made a will on 28 August 1678 at Henrico Co, VA. She made two wills, in this first will she provided for her Worsham children, John Worsham, Elizabeth, wife of Richard Kennon, Mary Worsham and Charles Worsham.¹ Elizabeth made a will on 23 September 1678 at Henrico Co, VA. In her second will she provided for her Epes children, William, Littlebury and Mary Epes. She appointed her son-in-law Richard Kennon and her son-in-law (meaning step-son) Francis Epes her Extrs.¹ She died before 1 October 1678 at Henrico Co, VA.¹

     Francis (14) Epes was born in 1659 at Henrico Co, VA.² He gave a deposition on 1 August 1691 at Henrico Co, VA. He was shown as Francis Epes, aged about 32 years (which puts his birth at 1659), but was probably older since, as administrator of his fahter's estate following his death in Aug 1678, he should have been 21.² He died before 2 February 1719/20 at Henrico Co, VA. It was on this date that on the motion of William Randolph, surviving trustee for Bermuda Hundred Town, Francis Epes was appointed trustee in the stead of his fahter, dec'd.²

In 1701 in spite of the fact that Thomas Pettit had exchanged all of his land here with his brother Francis, Thomas and his wife Elizabeth now sold the balance of 140 acres to Carpenter. These two purchases by hiim were the beginning of an accumulation of land in this vicinity by the Carpenter family, which finally included the N86 land as well. She was shown as daughter Peggy Blacknell dec'd in the will of William Jarvis Senr, wife Sarah. He gave her children one part among the all on condition that they shall not carry them my Negroes to the wester shore of across the Chesapeake.
