John William Duncan, Dead - Popular Onancock Postmaster passes away suddenly, funeral Tuesday. With the sudden passing of Mr. John William Duncan at his home last Sunday evening, Onancock lost one of its most outstanding citizens. Dr. Duncan had throughout his life made his personal integrity his first thought. For that reason the public recognized his sterling worth and his advice was often sought in both pubic and private affairs. He was the son of the late John William and Elizabeth Kellam Duncan and would have been 61 on the 13th of October. After finishing school at the Margaret Academy, Mr. Duncan joined the U.S. Marines and was stationed for four years in Cuba and Panama. Upon leaving the service he had a government position in Washington. This he resigned to go into partnership with his father in the jewelry business in Onancock. When his father Mr. Duncan continued the business and "Duncan's Jewelry store" became the outstanding store of its kind on the Eastern Shore. Due to ill health he retired from business. However, June 1935 he began to serve the public again, this time as postmaster of Onancock and he held that position at the time of his death. He served several terms as a member of the town council and also as a member of the board of stewards of Market Street Methodist Church. He was a member of Chesapeake Lodge No. 158 A.F. & A.M. Past High Priest of Jewel Royal Arch Chapter 49, Past Commander of Malta Command 24, and a member of Khedive Shrine, Norfolk, VA. Funeral services were conducted at his late residence Tuesday afternoon at 4 o'clock by the Rev. R.M. Robertson and burial was in the Onancock cemetery. The Knight Templers acted as a guard of honor at the home and at the grave. The pallbears were: Mr. William C. Taylor Jr. of Newport News, Judge Jeff Walter of Onancock, Mr. William Kellam of Craddockville, Dr. John W. Robinson, Dr. John W. Ross, Mr. W.E. Moore, Mr. G.R. Belote and Mayor Farring Scott of Onancock. Mr. Duncan is survived by his widow, Mrs. Suzanne Lankford Duncan, a son Mr. William Lankford Duncan of Waynesboro, two granddaughters Misses Suzanne Lankford and Margaret Piele Duncan of Waynesboro, and two sisters Mrs. H. Eugene Bell of Greenbackville, and Mrs. William C. Taylor Sr. of Newport News. Among those attending the funeral from out of town were: Mr. and Mrs. William C. Taylor Sr., Mr. and Mrs. William C. Taylor Jr. and son William III of Newport News; Mrs. H. Eugene Bell of Greenbackville; Mr. and Mrs. Allen D. Bell of Norfolk; Mr. and Mrs. William Kellam of Craddockville; Miss Mamie Turner, Belle Haven; Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Taylor, Temperanceville; Mrs. Harry Eichelberger, Keller; Mr. W.A. Dorrier of Waynesboro; Miss Amanda Lankford, Princess Anne, MD; and Miss Frances L. Taylor, Capeville.^1,4 John was buried at Onancock Cemetery, Onancock, Acc Co, Va.¹

     Mary Suzanne Lankford was born on 10 June 1890 at Somerset Co, MD.¹ As of 7 January 1913,her married name was Duncan.¹ She married John William Duncan Jr., son of John William Duncan Sr. and Elizabeth 'Bettie' Kellam, on 7 January 1913 at Accomack Co, VA. She was the daughter of the late William T. and Cornelia Josephine Lankford and was born in Somerset Co, MD. For the past 83 years Mrs. Duncan had been a resident of Onancock. Mrs. Duncan was a member of Holly Trinity Episcopal Church, Onancock, the Accomack County Woman's Club and the Garden Club of Accomack County. She is survived by a son, William Lankford Duncan of Waynesboro; two granddaughters, Mrs. Benjamin Stubbs Cooper of Hyattsville, MD and Mrs. Charles Herbert Moffitt III of Chimayo, New Mexico; and 4 great-grandchildren. The pallbearers were Hartwell F. Taylor Jr., William Custis, Oliver P. Boyer, George Lee Fosque Jr., Jack Selby and John G. Rogers.^1,5 Mary was buried at Onancock Cemetery, Onancock, Acc Co, Va.¹

He was shown as Everett Nottingham, a 24 year old farmer, the son of Edward W. & Annie Nottingham and she was shown as Lola Fitchett, age 21, the daughter of William J. & Georgianna Fitchett.² Everett Nottingham died on 1 February 1939 at age 79.¹ Everett was buried at Cape Charles Cemetery, Cape Charles, N'hamp Co, VA. His tombstone shows him as Everett Nottingham, 24 July 1859 - 1 Feb 1939.¹

     Lola Fitchett was born on 15 November 1861 at Northampton Co, VA.¹ Lola was listed with her parents in the census of 1870 at Capeville, N'hamp Co, VA. She was shown as Lola Fitchett, age 8 and attending school, in HH#374 headed by Wm. Fitchett, a 32 year old farmer.³ She married Everett Nottingham, son of Edward W. Nottingham Jr. and Ann Elizabeth Nottingham, on 15 November 1883 at Northampton Co, VA. He was shown as Everett Nottingham, a 24 year old farmer, the son of Edward W. & Annie Nottingham and she was shown as Lola Fitchett, age 21, the daughter of William J. & Georgianna Fitchett.² As of 15 November 1883,her married name was Nottingham.² Lola Fitchett died on 10 February 1946 at Northampton Co, VA, at age 84.¹ Lola was buried at Cape Charles Cemetery, Cape Charles, N'hamp Co, VA. Her tombstone shows her as Lola F. Nottingham, 15 Nov 1861 - 10 Feb 1946.¹

     Nancy Major was not found in Acc Wills 1800-1886 or N'hamp Wills 1800-1860 as Nancy or Ann Major. She was born circa 1803 at Northampton Co, VA.¹ She married William C. Watson on 4 September 1821 at Northampton Co, VA. Wm. Savage was the security on the M.L.B. of William Watson and Nancy Major. They were maried on 6 Sep 1821.¹ As of 4 September 1821,her married name was Watson.¹ Nancy was named in her mother's will on 8 November 1823 at Northampton Co, VA. She was shown as Nancy Watson in the will of Sophia Turner and at settlement the list of Legatees included Thomas E. Addison for daughter Nancy Watson.²

     Harriett P. Hadlock was born circa 1812 at Northampton Co, VA.¹ As of 5 April 1830,her married name was Matthews.¹ She married Lewis R. Matthews on 5 April 1830 at Northampton Co, VA. John T. Wilson was the security on the M.L.B. of Lewis R. Matthews and Harriet P. Hadlock, daughter of Robert Hadlock who gave consent. John W. Leatherbury witness. They were married on 6 Apr 1830.¹ Harriett was named in her father's will on 7 July 1831 at Northampton Co, VA. She was shown as my daughter Harriett (under 21), who I had by Fanny Turner, in the will of Robert Hadlock. He also named John Addison & Lewis R. Matthews Extrs. (NOTE: Evidently Lewis R. Matthews had already married his daughter Harriett.).²

     Robert Hadlock was born circa 1770.¹ He bought land after 1794 at tract N126, Exmore, N'hamp Co, VA. It was sometime after 1794 that John Carpenter sold 16 acres of tract N126 to Robert Hadlock and the south bounds for it were to be a continuation of the course of the present Hadlock crossroad to the westward of the bayside road. The next year that part was surveyed as 21 3/4 acres. Hadlock was a merchant and established a store on his land which resulted in this section becoming a thriving center and it soon lost it old name of TB in favor of the present one of Hadlock.² He bought land in 1810 at tract N91, Nassawadox, N'hamp Co, VA. It was in this year that Ralph Stott and his wife Joanna Stott sold 20 acres of tract N91 to Robert Hadlock.³ He sold land in 1823 at tract N91, Nassawadox, N'hamp Co, VA. It was in this year that Robert Hadlock sold as 8 acres of tract N91 to Anne Dowty and this was also later acquired by Upshur.³ Robert made a will on 7 July 1831 at Northampton Co, VA. I give and bequeath to Fanny Turner the use and benefit of the house and lot now occupied by Jane Ward adjoining the lot of John Henderson. I give and bequeath to my daughter Harriett by Fanny Turner the use and benefit of my whole estate real and personal until she arrive to the age of twenty one years, at which period I give the whole estate herein before given to my said daughter. The property herin given to Fanny Turner during her life, at her death I give to my daughter Harriet. I hereby constitute and appoint John Addison and Lewis R. Matthews executors. Signed, Robert Hadlock. Witnesses: John Addison, Levin J. Thomas, Wm C. Watson and William Wyatt Jr.⁴ He died before 18 November 1831 at Northampton Co, VA. It was on this date that his will was probated.⁴

     Fanny Turner was born circa 1790 at Northampton Co, VA.¹ Fanny was named as an heir on 7 July 1831 at Northampton Co, VA. She was shown as Fanny Turner in the will of Robert Hadlock. He gave her the use and benefit of the house and lot now occupied by Jane Ward adjoining the lot of John Henderson. He also named a daughter Harriett, who he had by Fanny Turner.¹

     Sophia Turner was born circa 1785.¹ Sophia witnessed a will on 20 August 1803 at Northampton Co, VA. It was on this date that Thos Parramore Senr, Sarah Mathews, Peggy Howell and Sophia Turner witnessed the will of Ezekiah Warren, wife no name.⁴ Sophia made a will on 8 November 1823 at Northampton Co, VA. I give to my beloved brother James Turner two hundred and fifty dollars (which is in the hands of Guy, Reavil & Parramore). I give to my sister Peggy ?Ewin the balance of the money that will be in Guy, Reavil & Parramore's hands after paying my brother James Turner his money left him. I give to Ritter Booll. I give to Miss Mahala Waterfield. I give to Nancy Watson. I give to Fanny Turner. I give to Thos Waterfield's wife. I give to Sally Matthews. I give to Margaret A. Matthews. I give to Elizabeth Turner. I give to Nancy Addison. I give to Susan W. Matthews. I give to Rosey & Sukey Matthews. The balance of my estate I leave to my brother James Turner.
