John Kendall Floyd was born on 30 March 1773 at Hungars Parish, N'hamp Co, VA.2 John was named in his father's will on 1 February 1785 at Hungars Parish, N'hamp Co, VA. He was shown as my eldest son John Kendall Floyd (under 21) in the will of William Floyd, wife Esther. He was given my 275 acre plantation (tract N21 on Old Plantation Creek) whereon I now dwell after the death of my wife Esther.1,3 John was named in his father-in-law's will on 9 November 1791 at Northampton Co, VA. He was shown as my son-in-law (meaning step-son) John K. Floyd in the will of Jonathan Ellegood, wife Esther.4 John was named in his uncle's will on 24 January 1799 at Northampton Co, VA. He was shown as my nephew John K. Floyd in the will of Thomas Kendall.5 He was on the personal property tax list in 1800 at Northampton Co, VA. He was shown as John K. Floyd with 5 slaves above 16, 1 slave above 12 & under 16, 4 horses &c.6 He bought land in 1800 at Northampton Co, VA. It was in this year, acting upon definite instructions from John Hollins of Baltimore, John Stratton deeded the whole 535 1/2 acres by survey to John K. Floyd. In 1843 after the death of Floyd there wre some rather involved family transactions. Among his other activities, Floyd had operated a ferry across the bay and among the assets left by him was the schooner General Jackson. It is said that upon one of his visits to the Shore, Bishop Meade came here to take the ferry and had to remain with the Floyds several days waiting for appropriate sailing weather. One morning while he was having prayers with the Floyds, Captain Jake Outten, master of the vessel then in use, rushed in, saying "Bishop Meade, git up off your marrow bones; wind's ready and the tide's ready, and wind and tide waits for no man, not even a bishop." In 1849 finally a commissioner sold the property as 501 acres to Miers W. Fisher. Fisher was an ardent Secessionist and had to leave the Shore during the Civil War and all of his properties were taken over by the Federals during the period of hostilities. This farm was used as an asylum for aged and indigent negroes, and there was a hospital here, perhaps for soldiers as well. In 1873 Fisher left to his daughter Juliette A. Parramore. 1902 By action of her heirs the property was vested in Linnie S., the wife of the late George F. Parramore. 1928 Trustees sold the house and 380 acres to J. W. Chandler and nine years later his estate sold to Ballard Bros. The Townfields house N39A stands in the center of what must have been "the Towne" and its site must also have been approximately that of the first church and courthouse. Near the bottom of the wide-base chimney are bricks marked "JKF" and "1809" to identify the builder, John K. Floyd, and the date of erection.7 He married Ann Stockley Teackle, daughter of Thomas Teackle (IV) and Catharine Stockley, on 26 July 1802 at Northampton Co, VA. Thos Lyt Savage was the security on the M.L.B. of John K. Floyd and Ann Stoackley Teackle the daughter of Thomas Teackle of Acc Co, who gave consent. They were married on 28 Jul 1802 by J. Elliott.8,2 John Kendall Floyd was named in a division of land in 1806 at Northampton Co, VA. It was in this year that William & Frances Floyd deeded a half-interest in the 400 acres plantation (tract N65) that his father William Floyd, wife Esther, left to him and his brother Matthew Floyd in 1785, to his brother John K. Floyd. Presumably his brother Matthew had died intestate because later in the year the land was surveyed for a division of 386 1/4 acres between John K. Floyd and the heirs of Matthew Floyd.9 He sold land in 1806 at Old Plantation Cr, N'hamp Co, VA. It was in this year that John K. Floyd sold the 275 acres of tract N21 on Old Plantation Creek, which had been bought by his grandfather Matthew Floyd in 1751, to a William Floyd.3 In 1809 he built "Townfields" house on his land on Cherition Inlet, just across the water from the town of Cape Charles. This house is still standing, with bricks marked JKF 1809 near the base of the chimney. He owned a schooner, the "General Jackson," and established the first ferry across the bay from the Eastern Shore; its opposite landing was in Hampton Roads. It was John K. Floyd with whom his cousin, Capt. Charles Floyd, of Georgia, had a reunion, the latter's attention having been attracted at Savannah by a handsome schooner which, on inquiry, proved to belong to John K. Floyd. There is a "A Little Family History" by Mary Floyd Hamilton, eldest child of Gen. John Floyd of Georgia; she derived her information from William S. Floyd Jr. of Baltimore, grandson of John K. Floyd.10 John was named in his mother's will on 31 December 1810 at Northampton Co, VA. He was shown as my son Jno K. Floyd in the will of Esther Ellegood.11 John was named in his sister's will on 8 November 1816 at Northampton Co, VA. He was shown as my brother John K. Floyd and named Extr in the will of Susanna Johnson, widow.12 John was listed as a head of household in the census of 1820 at Northampton Co, VA. He was shown as John K. Floyd a head of household.
