John Floyd I1

M, b. circa 1640, d. before 28 July 1687
ChartsAncestors of Charles Harold Burton
John Floyd I was born circa 1640.1 Note: the surname of Floyd is derived from the Welsh name of Lloyd which in turn came from the Welsh "Llwyd", meaning "grey". The name has been spelled variously as: Floyde, Flude, Flood, Floodd, Flud, Fludd, Fluid, Floid, Floide, Flode, Flod, Floydd and Floyd. The Lloyd progenitors of this family came from Wales. At least one branch settled in Ireland.2 He was named as a headright on 30 July 1660 at Northampton Co, VA. It was on this date that a land certificate was granted to John Wilcocks for 1,000 acres for transporting 20 persons into the county. The full list included Ann Wilcocks, Rose Yardly, Mary Avery, Cornelius Johnson, John Custis, Wm Marshall, Robt Marklockson, Henry Yardley, Wm Burton, Arien Ames, John Wilcocks, Wm St. Johns, Mary Barber, Ann Jeanes, Geo. Jenkins, John Floyd, Florence Pomroy, Wm Taylor, John Fereby & Wm Pryer. (NOTE: He was presumably born in Wales, although nothing of his parentage or early life is known.).3,4 He bought land on 1 May 1668 at Northampton Co, VA. It was on this date that John Waterson and his wife Frances assigned 100 aces of tract N37 to John Floyd. In 1687 Floyd left to son John who later died intestate but seems to have been followed by still another John. In 1789 John and Elishe Floyd of Princess Anne County sold to James Floyd. In 1823 a survey of the land of the late Captain James Floyd showed 127 1/2 acres.5,4 John Floyd was appointed constable of N'hamp County by the county court in 1669. His home plantation, the 100 acres acquired by him from Waterson, et. al. in 1668, was located about two miles south of Cheriton in the present N'hamp County on the water on the eastern side of the peninsula just south of the present small village of Oyster.6 He married Mary Berry (Berry?) circa 1674 at Northampton Co, VA. According to Brice M. Clagett of Washington, DC, it has been alledged that John Floyd's wife was born Mary Berry and was a daughter of either William Berry or James and Elizabeth Berry. There appears to be no evidence for this and presumably the allegation is based merely on the fact that a son of John & Mary was named Berry Floyd. That fact alone cannot, of course, be regarded as conclusive proof of Mary's maiden name. William Berry, founder of the family of that name in Southern Maryland, was born on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and was a son of James Berry, who first appears there about 1640.1,7 John Floyd I patented land in 1681 at Northampton Co, VA. It was in this year that a patent for 2,200 acres was granted to Thomas Hunt, John Floyd, Edmund Bibby and George Clarke. In 187 a new patent was granted to the same partners for a total of 3,350 acres called Hogg Island alias Shooting Beach. The next year the island was formally divided as follows: the south end to mary "Lloyd" on behalf of Charles, Berry and Matthew "Lloyd," the deed for which definitely says "Lloyd," but it was later disposed of by Floyd; to Thomas Hunt, the land north of the Floyds; the part north of him to Elizabeth Clarke on behalf of George and William Clarke; and the north end to Bibby. (NOTE: Brice Claget reports that Lloyd and Floyd are interchangeable in Welsh.) In the allotment of the Floyd part it was stated that it was near Coffin's house; perhaps he was the Thomas Coffin who had taken out a patent for Rogues' Island, and as overseer for the owners of Hog Island, he may have been the first person to live the latter. In 1728 Benjamin and Matthew Floyd sold 100 acres to Thomas Bell. In 1746 Samuel Floyd sold 139 acres to Charles Floyd. In 1747 Matthew Floyd sold 139 acres to Berry Floyd. In 1750 There was a formal division of 595 acres of Floyd land: 139 acres to Samuel Floyd; 278 acres to Matthew Floyd Sr., and 178 acres to Berry Floyd.8 He patented land in 1687. It was in this year that a Patent was issued to John Floyd for 400 acres called Prout's Island. In the years following, sales for parts of the island were noted, but no effort was made to trace each component part. In 1815 a Patent was issued to H. W. Cobb for 210 acres of Prout's Island. As time went on, storms cut a channel through the upper part of the island and the north part thus cut off became Prout's Island, while the remainder was called Cobb's Island. The former is now entirely gone. During the last quarter of the past century, a substantial hotel was built on the latter island and it became a very popular resort for some years, but erosion became so severe that finally the project had to be abandoned.9 John made a will on 2 April 1687 at Northampton Co, VA. To my son John my 100 A. plantation whereon I now live, a set of cooper's tools and carpenter's tools. To my sons Charles, Berry, and Mathew all my 1/4 part of Hogg Island to be eq. div. To my dau. Sarah one feather bed. To my dau. Esther one feather bed, but if she dies under 16 then to the rest of her brothers and sister. To my loving wife Mary two feather beds. My sons to be at age at 18 if their mother remarries, else 20, and daus. at 16. To my son John the 1/2 of Prouts Island. To my wife for life the use of 1/3 of my plantation. Wife Mary and my son John extrs. Witt: William Jarvis, William 'TWS' Shepheard, Thomas Hunt.1 According to Brice Clagget the Floyd quarter of Hog Island amounted to 837 acres, and on the whole John Floyd's descendants obeyed his testamentary command that "my desire is that if any of my three son shall not like to live on their part of Hog Island that they sell to their brothers or brother for the just value and . . . sell it to no other person." In the century and a half that Floyds continued on Hog Island, there were many conveyances among the family and, though there were a few to outsiders, these were made up for by new acquisitions. In 1833, by two deeds, 700 acres of Hog Island were conveyed to Joshua Bloore by Esther, Betsy, James, Sally D., Thomas B., Sally, William, Polly and Susan S. Floyd. Eight years previously Shepherd B. Floyd had deeded 125 acres to Eli Dowty. Thus the Floyd ownership of the Island came to an end (except for 100 acres purchased in 1828 by Matthew Floyd from Charles West); but the family has continued in Northampton County and is still prominent there; being noted in recent years for breeding racehorses. A small settlement of oysterman and fisherman remained on the island until the early 1930's, when a great hurricane drove them away. They never returned, and the island is now totally uninhabited.10 He died before 28 July 1687 at Northampton Co, VA. It was on this date that his will was probated.1

Berry or Benjamin Floyd was born circa 1678 at Northampton Co, VA.1 Berry was named in his father's will on 2 April 1687 at Northampton Co, VA. He was shown as my son Berry, under 18, in the will of John Floyd, wife Mary.1 He inherited land in 1688 at Hog Island, N'hamp Co, VA. It was in this year that Mary Lloyd (Floyd) on behalf of (her sons) Charles, Berry & Matthew Lloyd (Floyd), was alloted the south end of Hog Island which had be patented to her husband John Floyd the year before and he had died.2 He married (w/o Berry or Benj) (-----) circa 1720.3 Berry or Benjamin Floyd sold land in 1728 at Hog Island, N'hamp Co, VA. It was in this year that Benjamin & Matthew Floyd sold 100 acres on Hog Island To Thomas Bell.2 He bought land in 1728 at Northampton Co, VA. It was in this year that Berry Floyd bought 150 acres of the Major Joynes part of tract N128 (which is east of Exmore and north of Willis Wharf) from John Eshon. Then in 1750 he left to his son-in-law John Savage, until a granddaughter Esther Savage married or became 21. In 1761 Savage released it to John and Esther (Savage) Custis and 2 years later they sold it to Moses Kellum.4 Berry witnessed a will on 11 April 1733 at Northampton Co, VA. It was on this date William Bell, Berry Floyd & Thomas Joynes were witnesses to the will of Gilburd Henderson, wife Mary. At probate one of the witness' name was given as Benjamin Floyd.5 In Jun 1743 it was recorded in N'hamp Co that Benjamin Floyd accepts credit for 11 bu corn, cakes and beans as well as for making 4 pairs of shoes and mending a pair for the debt owed by John Henderson for land rent. The balance due Floyd was £1.19.8.6 Berry made a will on 26 May 1749 at Northampton Co, VA. To my nephew Berry Floyd 100 A. on Hog Island on the north side of my land, in consideration of 100 A. (also on the island) conveyed by my brother Matthew Floyd to Thomas Bell. To my son in law John Savage the use of all my lands (excepting the 100 A.), and also the slaves Matt, Venus, Daniel, and Rachel during his life. To my granddau. Esther Savage the 150 A. plantation whereon I now dwell, and ns. Peter and Leah. To my granddau. Sarah Savage the remainder of my Hog Island land, and slaves Bristol and Dublin and the child that Venus now goes with. If my granddaus. Esther and Sarah Savage die under 21, then the land I now live on to my nephew Matthew Floyd son of Matthew Floyd, and my Hog Island land to Berry Floyd son of Matthew. My two granddaus. Esther and Sarah Savage resid. legatees, but if they die under 21 then remaining estate to the five children of my brother Matthew, viz., Charles, Matthew, Berry, Sarah and Mary. Son in law John Savage extr. Witt: John Joyne, John Henderson, William Joyne.3 He died before 11 December 1750 at Northampton Co, VA. It was on this date that his will was probated.3 In Sept 1757 it was recorded in N'hamp Co that on the complaint of Easland Joyne, admx of Edmund Joyne and Comfort Henderson, extrx of John Henderson it is shown that in their lifetime the said Edmund and John became bound as securities for John Savage for his faithful administration of the estate of Berry Floyd as by his will dated 11 Dec 1750. The petitioners fear that they are in danger of suffering damage. The Sheriff of Acc Co is ordered to have the said John Savage appear. Case determined.7

It was in this year that Benjamin & Matthew Floyd sold 100 acres on Hog Island To Thomas Bell.2 Matthew was named in his brother's will on 26 May 1749 at Northampton Co, VA. He was shown as my brother Matthew Floyd in the will of Berry Floyd. However, that date seems to be closer to her birth date.2 Esther was named in her father's will on 2 April 1687 at Northampton Co, VA. ChartsAncestors of Charles Harold Burton
Mary Berry (Berry?) was born circa 1655.1 She married John Floyd I circa 1674 at Northampton Co, VA. William Berry, founder of the family of that name in Southern Maryland, was born on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and was a son of James Berry, who first appears there about 1640.1,2 As of circa 1674,her married name was Floyd.1 Mary was named in her husband's will on 2 April 1687 at Northampton Co, VA. She was shown as a wife Mary in the will of John Floyd, wife Mary.1

Towards the end of the century a John Williams became the owner of the whole tract N24, which contains "Millford," in some unexplained manner. Then in 1801 Peter Bowdoin, then owner of N25, sold Williams a mill property of 2 acres on the branch. In 1805 the will of John Williams, wife Margaret, directed that mill and land were to be divided among his youngest children: Benjamin, Thomas and James, when Benjamin became of age. Then in 1816 a survey for division showed 382 acres.5 John made a will on 10 December 1804 at Northampton Co, VA. It is my will that six hundred pounds which I agreed to give to my son John Williams should be paid out of my estate and when paid it is then my true will and meaning that my son John Williams never should inherit no more of my estate nor his heirs forever. It is my will and desire that my son William Williams should inherit and enjoy all the lands in my upward plantation provided my son William pays to my daughters or their heirs the just and full sum of three hundred pounds. To my son Samuel S. Williams the just and full sum of six hundred pounds. It is my will and desire that the plantation and mill where I now live should be kept during the widow hood of my wife with as many of my Negroes as my executor thinks best for the benefit of my estate for the support and bringing up of my six youngest children till they come of age or marry. And further it is my will and desire that the plantation and mill whereon I live should be equally divided between my three youngest sons Benjamin, Thomas and James Williams when Benjamin comes to age. My will and desire is that all my Negroes should be equally divided between my six youngest children; Sarah, Margaret, Elizabeth, Benjamin, Thomas and James. I do hereby ordain my son William Williams my sole executor. Signed, John Williams. Witnesses: John Goffigon, John Nottingham and Benjamin Scott.6 He died before 9 April 1805 at Northampton Co, VA. It was on this date that his will was probated. Administrator William Williams. Appraisers: John Goffigon, John Nottingham, George Powell and Azariah Williams. Inventory and Appraisement taken on March 19, 1808. Division of Land recorded on June 10, 1816. In conformity to a decree of the worshipful court of the County of Northampton we have divided the land therein named between the parties in the following manner: to Margaret Williams widow of John the Elder in right of her dower, Thomas Williams, Samuel Williams, John Williams heirs, William Williams, Susanna Trower, widow of James in right of dower, Sally Nottingham, Margaret Jarvis, Elizabeth Williams and Margaret Williams, mother of James.6
