He was wounded in the Battle of New Market when the cadets were called to face Union troops during the Civil War. Later he studied medicine at the University of Richmond and at the Medical College of Virginia where he graduated in 1868. He settled in Richmond in 1869 and became an outstanding member of the medical profession of that city.¹ He married Lucy Tucker Whittle, daughter of Rev. Francis M. Whittle and Emily Cary Fairfax, on 19 November 1873.¹ Dr. John Nottingham Upshur married Elizabeth Spencer Peterkin on 11 December 1879.² Dr. John Nottingham Upshur died on 9 December 1924 at Richmond, VA, at age 76.¹

     Dr. Francis Whittle Upshur was born on 4 December 1874 at Richmond, VA.¹ He attended Richmond College where he graduated in 1897. After completing his internship he practiced medicine in Richmond for many years. During World War I he served in the Medical Corps, US Navy, and for a few years prior to his death he was a member of the medical staff of the Eastern State Hospital, Williamsburg, VA.² He married Martha Maury Robinson, daughter of Poitiaux Robinson and Anne Muary, on 20 April 1921.¹ Dr. Francis Whittle Upshur died on 25 October 1945 at age 70.¹

     Maj. Gen. William Peterkin Upshur was born on 28 October 1881 at Richmond, VA.¹ He graduated from Virginia Military Institue in 1902, studied law at the University of Virginia and entered the US Marine Corps in 1904 as Second Lieutant. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor of conspicuous gallantry in Haiti in 1914. At the time of his death he was a Major General and was the Comanding General of the Marines of the Pacific and second ranking officer of the Marine Corps. In 1949 the New York Shipbuilding Corp. began building the ocean liner, President Hayes, for the American President Lines at Camden, NJ. War broke out in Korea in June 1950 and three months later the US Navy acquired her for military service. She renamed the USNS Upshur in honor of this dedicated Marine.¹ He married Lucy Taylor Munford in 1904.² Maj. Gen. William Peterkin Upshur died on 21 July 1943 at Sitka, AK, at age 61.¹ William was buried at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington Co, VA.²

He was given £1,000 pounds.³ He married Maria Teackle Savage, daughter of Thomas Littleton (97) Savage and Mary Burton (162) Savage, on 13 July 1811 at Northampton Co, VA. George Parker was the security on the M.L.B. of Severn E. Parker to Maria Teackle Savage. The were married on 17 Jul 1811.^1,4 Severn was named in his father-in-law's will on 1 August 1812 at Cugly, Northampton Co, VA. He was shown as my son-in-law Severn E.      Frederick Eagle Mayo Upshur was born on 26 August 1837 at Norfolk, VA.¹ He died on 12 September 1837 at Norfolk, VA.¹

     Peggy Eyre Parker Upshur was born on 26 September 1839.¹ She died on 25 May 1841 at Cedar Grove, Acc Co, VA, at age 1.¹ Peggy was buried at Vaucluse, N'hamp Co, VA.¹

     Peter Poythress Mayo was born circa 1800.¹ He married Leah Custis Upshur, daughter of Littleton Upshur I and Ann 'Nancy' (215) Parker, 07 Jul 1824 (bond). A.P. Upshur was the security on the M.L.B. of Peter P. Mayo and Leah C. Upshur. They were married on 9 Jul 1824. The Acc Co marriage records show Peter D. Mago married Leah C. Upshur on 3 Aug 1823.^1,3,4 Peter was named in his brother-in-law's will on 4 March 1830 at Northampton Co, VA. He was shown as my brother-in-law Peter P. Mayo in the will of Littleton Upshur.⁵ He married Anne Elizabeth Upshur, daughter of Littleton Upshur II and Mary Vaughn Wilson, on 27 March 1841 at Northampton Co, VA. John L. Upshur was the security on the M.L.B. of Peter P. Mayo and Anne E. Upshur, daughter of Col. Littleton Upshur dec'd. They were married on 28 Mar 1841.^3,2 Peter was named in his brother-in-law's will on 13 April 1841 at Northampton Co, VA. He was shown as my brother-in-law Peter P. Mayo of Norfolk in the will of Abel P. Upshur.⁶

     Littleton Upshur II was born on 14 August 1783 at Vaucluse, N'hamp Co, VA.¹ He married Mary Vaughn Wilson, daughter of Mayor Thomas Wilson and Mary Vaughn, on 23 December 1810. They made their home at "Pear Plain."¹ In 1811 his father gave him a tract of land a few miles from "Vaucluse" farther up Church Neck on Hungars Creek, know as "Pear Plain." He represented N'hamp Co for several years in both the Virginia House of Delegates and Senate. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 11 of Eastville and a Vestryman of Hungars Church as his father had been. He served as Captain in the 27th Regiment of Virginia Miitia for N'hamp Co in the War of 1812 along with several of his brothers. In later years he was know as Colonel Littleton Upshur and his name was so recorded in many of the records of N'hamp and Accomack Counties.¹ Littleton was named in his brother's will on 19 June 1820 at Northampton Co, VA. He was shown as my brother Littleton in the will of Caleb B. Upshur.² Littleton made a will on 4 March 1830 at Northampton Co, VA. I order and direct that the whole of my property, except specified legacies shall be equally divided amongst all my children, to wit: Ann, Arthur, Juliet, Ellen, Littleton and Thomas Upshur. I appoint my executor, guardian to all my children. If my sister J. U. Elliott should desire to keep my family together my executor is authorized to keep up my farm in the same manner as it is now carried on. I give to my daughter Anne E. Upshur the mahogany wardrobe and washstand which are now in her possession. I give to my son Arthur W. Upshur the gold watch that I usually wear. I give to my daughter Juliet L. Upshur the mahogany wardrobe that stands in my chamber and a set of gilt tea china that was a present to her mother. I give to my daughter Ellen A. Upshur the bureau, wash stand and portable desk that were her mothers. I give to my son Littleton Upshur the whole of my silver plate the gold sleeve buttons and breast buckle that I usually wear. I give to my son Thomas W. Upshur one hundred dollars which I direct my executor to deposit in the savings Bank of Philadelphia until my said son Thomas shall attain to the age of twenty one years. I desire that my executor divide my Library, or such books thereof as he may deem worth preserving amongst my three sons, and my nephew Littleton U. Mayo son of Peter P. Mayo. I appoint my brother Abel P. Upshur my executor and in case of his death or neglect or refusal to qualify then I appoint my brother George P. He died after a painful illness of 9 weeks at his residence in Northampton, Colonel Lyttleton Upshur - the ornament of the Court of which he had long been a member - frequently a member of Legislature - a highly respected and valuable citizen and an excellent man (Richmond Whig, 19 Oct 1832 issue).¹

Allston, in 1855. They lived first in Warrenton, NC. He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, following which he moved to Greenwood, MS where he became Sheriff of Leflore County.¹ Littleton Upshur III died on 15 March 1884 at age 56.¹
