Southey was born in August 1716 at Accomack Co, VA.2 On 6 Nov 1716 the grand jury presented Mary Lettleton for fornication and on 6 Mar 1716/17 the sheriff reported that he had summoned her and others, that they failed to appear at this court. Ordered that the sheriff take them into custody and keep them till they entered a bond for their appearance at the next court.1 Southey was an apprentice on 5 December 1733 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that it was ordered that Southy Littleton (orphan) be bound to Mark Littleton to learn the trade of carpenter..3 Southey was an apprentice on 6 February 1734 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that it was ordered that Southy Littleton (orphan, aged 17 years last August) be bound to George Bundick to learn the trade of a weaver..2 He married Betty Thomas, daughter of Samuel Thomas (bricklayer) and Elizabeth 'Betty' (-----), circa 1738 at Accomack Co, VA. According to Whitelaw, Samuel Thomas, bricklayer, died intestate in 1737 and was succeeded by a daughter Betty who married Southy Littleton. On 3 Jan 1737/8 his daughter Betty Thomas (orpahn of Samuel Thomas) selected Isaac Dicks Jr. as her guardian, with Henry Satchel & John Simpson security.) (NOTE: Someone was usually at least age 14 to be allowed to chose a guardian.) In a court case on 30 Nov 1743 over this land it was brought out that Samuel Thomas left a widow Betty still living on the land..4,5 Southey was named as administrator of an estate on 4 July 1738 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that the verbal will of James Gray was proved by John Dix & Southy Littleton. Southy Littleton qualifed to settle the estate. James left his whole estate to Solomon Gray & Betty Thomas..6,7 On 16 Jul 1739 in Acc Co, VA, processioning of boundary lines included the Line between Southy Littleton & Rachel Thomas beginning a Stake near Parkers Mill Dam & from thence by a Line of mark'd Stakes to a red Oak Standing on the Line between Sd Land & the Land of John Drummond; the line round the Acre of ground for use Thos Gibbons's Mill formerly by Onions Mill and the line between Southy Littleton & Joseph Taylor beginning at a red Oak Corner tree and from thence by a line of mark'd to a Maple tree Standing in Parkers Mill Branch.8 He served on a jury on 28 January 1742 at Accomack Co, VA.9 On 24 Feb 1741/2 Southey Rew petitioned against Southey Littleton, who admitted owning £1:11:00 plus costs. Mary Jenkins attended five days as witness for Rew. On 1 Apr 1742 Southey Littleton attended one day as a witness for John Gilchrist against Samuel Stakes. On 22 Feb 1742/3 Richard Faldo (lessee of John Drummond Jr.) bought action of ejectment against John Aldo. Sheriff Southey Rew swore that Elizabeth, the wife of Southey Littleton (tenant in possession) was served a copy of the declaration; unless someone came next court to make himself defendant, possession would be awarded to the plaintiff. On 29 Jun 1743 Charles Rew swore that the conditional order was served and Southy Littleton was made defendant. The case was referred to the next court for trial.10 He served on a jury on 1 September 1743 at Accomack Co, VA.11 He had a child bound to him on 28 May 1754 at Accomack Parish, Accomack Co, VA. Ordered that Jacob aged Seven Years Last December and Samson aged four Years Last December Mulatto Children of Esther Perkins be bound by Church Wardens of Accomack Parish to Southy Littleton till Lawful age to Learn the Trade of a Shoemaker he the said Southy first giving Security for Performance of said indenture.12 On 26 Aug 1760 in Acc Co, VA, Southy Littleton was paid £8.06.6 on an account of Geo. Abbott, orphan, the Account of Rebuilding the Mill. Col. Thomas Parramore was Geo. Abbott's guardian.13 On 31 Jan 1764 Southey Littleton took out a mortgage for £30 paid by William Drummond (both of Acc Co, VA) for 2 beds & furniture, 2 Mares & 1 colt, 2 spinning wheels, 4 pewter dishes, 3 pewter basins & 1 dozen plates and silverware, all my carpenter tools. Signed Southey Littleton and witnessed by James Henry & John Fitzgerrald.14 Southey patented land on 13 December 1769 at Onslow Co, NC. It was on this date that Southey Littleton Sr. obtained a grant of 300 acres of land on Mill Swamp in Onslow Co, NC. On 12 Jul 1790 when he sold 146 acres of this land to Josiah Henderson it was described as on Mill Swamp, up the little N.E. of New River at the head of Buck Branch, down Steel's Branch at the dividing line of William Wilkins Taylor. On 7 Nov 1785 his son Southey Littleton Jr. sold 200 aces of this land to William W. Taylor..15 On 28 Jul 1775 in Onslow Co, NC Southey Littleton was a witness to a land sale by Stephen Hadnot to Edward Starkey. On 11 Apr 1775 Southey Littleton purchased 50 acres from for £15 on the west side of north east branch of the New River. On 9 Feb 1776 Southey Littleton and John Starkey Jr. were witnesses to a land saled by John Starkey Sr. to John Meccina. On 12 Jun 1778 Southey purchased 140 acres from Daniel Everington for £30.16 Southey deeded land as a gift on 14 April 1778 at Onslow Co, NC. It was on this date that Southey Littleton Sr. gave his son Southey Littleton Jr. 200 acres of land at Michael Russell's line..17 Southey patented land on 25 October 1782 at Onslow Co, NC. Southey patented 100 acres on 25 Oct and another 100 acres on 28 Oct 1782..16 Southey deeded land as a gift on 13 January 1789 at Onslow Co, NC. It was on this date that Southey Littleton gave his son Zachariah Littleton two tracts of land on or near N.E. branch of New River. Matthews has departed this life & since which time I have purchased a tract of land of Miss Rosenna Upshur & al do hereby ratify & confirm the following as apart of my said last will & testament; to wit The tract of land which I purchased of Rosenna Upshur & al being a part of the same tract which I bot of Mason, I give & bequeath to my son Henry A. Mathews. My further will and desire is that my mother Mary Mathews receive from my executor before named out of my estate the sum of seventy dollars annually during her life. Signed, Lewis R.
