Elmer was born on 4 July 1916 at Accomack Co, VA. He married Anita Jamison circa 1939.2 Elmer Thomas Crowson died on 11 January 2010 at Rock Hill, SC, at age 93. Elmer Thomas Crowson, 93, passed away Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, in Rock Hill, S.C. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held Saturday, Jan. 16, at 2 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church with Dr. Shelton Sanford officiating. Burial will be private in the Liberty Cemetery, Parksley, VA. Fondly nicknamed "Mr. South Carolina" by generations of Winthrop University students who vied for a seat in his State History course, Crowson was past president of the South Carolina Historical Association and served for many years as State Historian for the SC Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. A lifelong scholar of Southern history, Crowson wrote a number of books and saw many dozens of his articles published in journals.Although fascinated by South Carolina history, Crowson was a native Virginian who descended from members of the Virginia Company. He was born at Tall Pines, Crowsontown, on land granted his ancestors in 1666. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Lula Brown Justis and James Henry Crowson Sr. and Jr. Recruited to run track at the College of William and Mary, he earned BA and MA degrees there and an MA at the University of Virginia. His doctoral studies were at American University. Prior to joining the Winthrop faculty in 1953, he taught at Staunton Military Academy, Bullis Naval School, Presbyterian College of N.C., and Blackstone College. He received invitations to join the faculties of the United States Naval Academy and William and Mary, but selected Winthrop because he believed Rock Hill was a better place to raise his family. Winthrop was the South Carolina College for Women, and Crowson was a powerful advocate for women's self-sufficiency. He encouraged students to think for themselves, urging them to strive for the best possible education and financial independence. Crowson brought distinguished lecturers to campus, took classes to Columbia for legislative visits, and required students in various courses to read and discuss the Wall Street Journal, the Congressional Record, the New York Times and the state newspaper among others. He encouraged his students to participate in their communities and their government, to become citizens in the truest sense. His students continued to correspond and visit with him until his death, many sharing their successes and fondly recalling Crowson's lectures. A number of classes voted him either "Most Valuable Male Professor" or runner-up before the award was discontinued in the 1960s. At Winthrop, Crowson held himself to the same standard of excellence that he held his students. He served on every faculty committee at some point, chairing many including the Committee on Academic Tenure and Freedom and the Executive Board of the Winthrop Christian Association. He reviewed projects on S.C. for the National Endowment for the Humanities and helped spearhead the creation of Landsford Canal as a state park, writing its history and giving its dedication address. For students, he sponsored the History Club, the International Relations Club and the Collegiate Council for the United Nations. A devoted student of military history, Crowson worked summers with the National Park Service to identify, research, protect and preserve Civil War battlefields. The NPS used Crowson's study of the Second Battle of Manassas to set up the field for its 1961-62 centennial observances and Crowson received a U.S. Department of the Interior Citation for his NPS Dorgan House Study. He was the recipient of the Sons of the American Revolution's MacArthur Patriot's Medal for Outstanding Contributions to the Society and the Sons of Confederate Veterans' Bonnie Blue award for contributions to Southern history. He had been active in numerous genealogical, professional and civic groups. Retiring in 1983, Crowson returned to Winthrop as trustee in 1998 at his former students' urging. Winthrop was in turmoil, with an administration in conflict with the faculty, which had returned a vote of no confidence in the administration. As a member of the Board of Trustees, Crowson fought to prevent the sale of Winthrop Farm land for development purposes, often standing in public opposition to the Winthrop administration and other board members. Concerned that the board was heavily populated by trustees with Rock Hill ties, he lobbied S.C. officials to change the board selection process to produce a more state-wide representation. And, finally, Crowson worked to bring awareness to the deteriorating conditions faced by the faculty in hopes of reversing that trend. Although suffering with cancer, he persevered and saw his goals realized. Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Anita Kathleen Jamison; daughter, Susan Crowson Hite; sons, Thomas Jonathan Crowson and Richard Henry Crowson; six grandchildren; and two great-grandsons. The family will receive friends at Westminster immediately following the memorial service and other times at the home. Memorials may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1300 India Hook, Rock Hill, S.C. 29732. Arrangements by the Williams-Parksley Funeral Home.

There is no record of the death of John Turnall, but a deed in 1751 clears up the succession. A James & Elizabeth Ryal sold 250 (150?) acres to Charles Rew, the document stating that John Turnall had left the land to his nephew Roger Hill, who was the son of his sister Margaret and her husband Richard Hill, and that Elizabeth Ryal was the only heir, as daughter of Roger Hill. The next year Charles Rew of North Carolina sold as 134 acres to Southy Simpson, and the year following he and his wife Comfort resold to James Stran. The date of his death was undiscovered, but he was succeeded by a son William Stran, who thus became possessed of most of the originial 300 acres patented to Roger Ternon..2,3
