Susannah was born circa 1730 at Accomack Co, VA. She was named as the mother of a bastard child in February 1748/49 at Accomack Co, VA. Susannah Justice had a son whom she attributed to George Parker–who later claimed the child was a mulatto. The court ordered her to bring the child in, and in July the court dismissed Parker’s complaint against Susannah, implying that they believed Susannah, not Parker.2 She was named as the mother of a bastard child on 1 January 1755 at Accomack Co, VA. Susannah Justice made oath that George a Male Bastard Child of which she is this Day Convict was begotten on her body by Southy Littleton and Ordered that Process issue against the said Southy returnable to the next Court (on page 79 (29 January 1755): Church Wardens against Southy Littleton The said Southy being brought to the Barr being Charged with being the Father of Susannah Justices Male Bastard Child and failing to give Security to keep the Parish Indemnifyd by reason of any Maintenance or bringing up the said Bastard Child Ordered that he be Committed to the Custody of the Sheriff till he give good and sufficient Security in the Sum of fifty Pounds and the payment of the Costs. Susannah Justice made oath that Nanny a Female Bastard Child Born of her Body was begotten by John Holt Ordered that Process Issue against the said John returnable to the next court (on page 70 (29 January1755): William Baker as Security with said John Holt Recognized in the sum of fifty Pounds to said Churchwardens for to bear the Parish Harmless for Maintaining a Female Bastard Child of Susannah Justices named Nanny & Ordered that the said John pay the Costs.3 Susannah was named in her father's will on 12 May 1757 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Ralph Justice named Sarah Justice, daughter of Susannah, in his will. (NOTE: He did not name Susannah as a daughter.).1 She was named as the mother of a bastard child on 31 October 1758 at Acc Co, VA. In the Action of Debt brought by the Church Wardens against Susannah Justice The said Defendant this day Came into Court & Saith that she Cannot gainsay but that she is Guilty of having the Bastard Children as she by the said Church wardens is charged Whereupon Its Considered that she make her fine with the said Church Wardens by the Payment of fifty Shillings or Five hundred Pounds of Tobacco & Cask & that she pay the Costs of this Prosecution. Costs Clks 187 Shs 50 Nt 214 & 15/or 150 lbsTobo. The said Susannah this day in Court paid the above Fine & Costs. The Said Susannah likewise this day made Oath that Jonathan Ailworth is the Putative Father of Elijah & Leah two Bastard Children lately born of her body of which she was this day Convict & Ordered that Process Issue against the said Jonathan returnable to the next Court” (Elijah and Leah may have been born as early as 30 May 1758, when the church wardens started looking for Susannah (p. 243), though the wardens were also known to bring charges against women with unborn children. It seems clear that these children were twins; Susannah paid only one fine.).4
