John was born circa 1660 at Accomack Co, VA.1 He deeded land in 1694 at tract A162, Jenkins Bridge, Acc Co, VA. It was in this year that John and Tabitha Custis deeded 500 acres to John Custis of Pocomoke, the document stating that the sale had been made in 1683. It was on Crooked (Holden's) Creek immediately east of A161, extended about half way up to Bullgegger Creek, and was bounded on the east by the present road north from Jenkins Bridge and a continuation of that course to the head bounds. In 1697 he was known to have married Bridget, the widow of William Taylor II (A141), but the next year she was dead and there was no known issue. He disposed of his land in two parcels. Apparently the land had been surveyed and found actually to contain 574 acres, as in 1699 Custis sold 374 acres to Thomas Jenkinsson, it being the western part of his land. If is from this family that the present village of Jenkin's Bridge takes its name.3 He married Bridget Rackcliffe, daughter of Charles Rackcliffe and Elizabeth (-----), circa 1697.3 On 3 Jan 1699/1700 in Accomack Court
at the last court it was ordered that the sheriff take Mr. John Custis into custody till he posted security to swear at this court to an account of the estate of William Taylor, deceased. The sheriff (Capt. Thomas Welburne) had returned an endorsed copy of the order, declaring that he had summoned Custis to this court to answer, with Capt. Henry Custis assuming to be security. Mr. Tully Robinson (attorney for Elias Taylor), objected to this, saying that the sheriff should have taken security from Custis himself. Since the sheriff had failed to perform according to the order, the case was continued to the next court. Welburne was ordered to perform the contents of the order or be answerable for damages.4 John made a will on 25 January 1700 at Somerset Co, MD. To Matthew Scarborough and his wife Hannah and their daughter Ann. To John Scarborough, William Golethrap and Daniel Richardson. To Sacker, son of John Parker: land in Accomac County. Mentions John Webb. Extr. Matthew Scarborough. Witt: Nataniel Hopkins, Comfort Ayres, Henry Ayres and James Bratten.5 John was named as a guardian on 4 June 1700 at Accomack Co, VA. Elizabeth Atkinson (widow of James Atkinson and now wife of Henry Allin) requested that because of "her husband's improvidence & neglect in not maintaining her said son John (who was eight years of age ye 18th of October next) might be committed to ye care & tuition of Col. John Custis, who being present in court rendered himself willing (in reference to his wives [sic] relation to the said Elizabeth) to take the said John until he arrived to lawful age." The court approved the arrangement.2 John died before 11 March 1706 at Somerset Co, MD.5 He deeded land as a gift in 1706 at tract A162, Jenkins Bridge, Acc Co, VA. In 1718 Sacker Parker sold to Thomas Jenkinson Jr. 200 acres which he said had been left to him by the will of John Custis (of Pocomoke). The will was recorded in Somerset Co, MD. When Gen. John Custis originally deeded the next part of the whole tract he defined it as being "adjacent to the land set aside for my Cozen John Custis," so there a definite relationship between the two. It is known that William Cusis (A66), a brother of Gen. John Custis, acquired a stepdaughter Frances Stockley when he married his first wife, and that she married Edward Sacker and they had a daughter Bridget who married John Parker II (A59), and further that Sacker Parker with their son. It is therefore believed that this John Custis of Pocomoke was a son of William Custis (A66) and his first wife and therefore a half-brother of Frances Stockley Sacker, and that he left the 200 acre balance to of his land to his grandnephew.1 Aappraisers of Col. John Custis (Pocomoke-A162)'s estate were named on 3 May 1707 at Somerset Co, MD. It was on this date that William Stevenson and John Porter were named to appraise the estate of John Custis.6

At the seaboard it was north of the piece later sold to Black and from there extended westward along his land and the rest of the Custis land to its head line. In 1688 Francis Sacker died intestate, and a few months after his brother William became sole owner, he left it to his cousin Elizabeth Custis, the daughter of his uncle Henry Custis, who was a half-brother of Sacker's mother Frances (Stockley) Sacker. Delight was born circa 1661 at Accomack Co, VA.1 He served on a jury on 2 March 1702/3 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as Delight Shield and was named to a grand jury for the next year.2 On 6 May 1704 a cattle mark was record for Delight Shield.3 According to Whitelaw in 1705 a contract was given to Delight Shield to build the first Accomack County Courthouse (other than a tavern) on tract A91, which is today the town of Accomac. The following is from McKey's Volume 10 of Accomack County Orders. Beginning a process that dragged on for four years, the county clerk, in June 1705, was ordered to search the records for anything concerning the county's rights to the land belonging to the courthouse. In August the following was noted: Whereas the Courthouse of Accomack County being very much out of repair, and is thought by this court past repairing, therefore ye court have considered of ye same (and) do think fit to erect & build a new Courthouse containing in length forty-five foot & twenty foot in breadth withinside and accordingly do order and appoint Col. Tully Robinson, Capt. George Hope and Robert Snead to inquire & inspect into ye charge of ye building of ye same and whether it be convenient to be built with brick or timber and likewise to treat with workmen for ye building of ye same. The appointed men were to meet and take proposals from any workmen that presented themselves and report to the next court so "further measures may be taken for ye performing and effecting and speedy building of ye same." In October, 1707, Delight Shield was ordered to "procure tar to tar ye outside of ye courthouse." Seven months later (4 May 1708), the court, no doubt weary of waiting for their new accommodations, "sat at ye usual courthouse and ordered that Delight Sheild, ye undertaker for ye building of ye new courthouse, should be sent for, who appearing, ye court asked him if ye courthouse were finished. Ye said Delight made answer it was not finished, but he had made it fit so that if they pleased they might keep court there." Adjourning for half an hour, the court proclaimed that "all persons that had anything to do at this court should appear at ye intended new courthouse and ordered that ye court should set (sic) there." Though used that afternoon, the new courthouse must have been a long way from completion. One year later, almost to the day, Delight Sheild petitioned that he had built a courthouse for the county by contract; he asked "that the workmanship thereof and appurtenances may be viewed by workmen and if found sufficient according to contract, then for the county to receive it. If not found sufficient according to contract, then he will make good what is wanting, to perform the same." The next month men were appointed to examine the workmanship, but it wasn't till February 1709/10, that the county received the courthouse and the matter officially came to an end. At that court Tully Robinson (and the others charged with finding a builder) were discharged from their trust; "The court gave them thanks for ye care and trouble in that affair." At the same time, Delight Shield, who "did undertake to build a Court House for this county and finished the said work" was discharged from one bond for building the courthouse-and found himself posting another to "mend and make good that part of the chimney that is broke against the window and to put up two shingles where they are wanting." Protective of their new building, the court then "ordered that no person that shall come to this court to sell liquor or other things as a sutler shall bring or sell the same any nearer this Court House than the road or the same distance, and that no person whatsoever make any fires any nearer the Court House than aforesaid."4,5 He married Elizabeth Custis, daughter of Capt. Henry Custis (Ravenswood-A68A) and Rachel Revell, circa 1705.6 In 1706 Charles Bayly and John West, the new owners of the Baggle land, offered the county the privilege of errecting a new prison, stocks and a pillory near the old one; this was accepted and a new prison 16 feet square was authorized. Presumably Delight Shield was the contractor and it also would have been approximatley at tract A91P.7 Delight witnessed a will on 14 January 1708 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that William Custis, Francis Wharton & Delight Sheald witnessed the will of James Alexander, wife Ann.8 On 6 Jan 1712/13 Col. William Custis (surveyor of the highways in Delight Sheald's former precinct) went before Col. Tully Robinson (a justice) and complained against John Rodgers, his son William Rodgers, William Parker, William Spires, Delight Sheald, Jona. James, Richard Sheald and James Taylor, all of whom had been summoned to meet Custis at "the Bridge neare Mr. Burton" on 26 September, for the purpose of maintaining the highways according to the law. According to Custis, the named men refused. After a full hearing, the court determined that the men had not refused to obey the court order; the men were discharged and Custis had to pay court costs.9 He bought land on 6 March 1721/22 at Accomack Co, VA. Delight Shield bought 300 of tract A121 along the north side of the road through the present Modest Town from Rev. William Black & his wife Sarah. On 4 Sep 1722 Delight and his wife Elizabeth sold the western half to Peter Rogers and 7 years later they sold the eastern half to Solomon Whaley, carpenter.10,11,12 He sold land on 4 September 1722. Delight Shiels sold 150 acres to Peter Rogers.13 On 4 Dec 1722 Rose Bager was presented in the May court for fornication and bastard-bearing and was ordered taken [into custody]. Now in court and questioned about the paternity of her child Rose swore that Delight Sheild was the father. Ordered that Delight Sheild be taken into custody till posting a bond for his appearance at the next court and for his good behavior. Richard Sheild came into court and agreed to pay the fine of Rose Bager (single woman) for fornication and bastard-bearing. Ordered that Sheild pay 500 lbs tobacco to the churchwardens (at the laying of the next levy) along with court costs. Richard Sheild acknowledged himself bound to the churchwardens to keep the parish from the cost of supporting the child born to Rose Bager (single woman). 2 Apr 1723 - At the December court Rose Badger appeared to answer the presentment of fornication and bastard-bearing. Questioned about the paternity of the child, she swore that Delight Sheild was the father. The sheriff was ordered to take Sheild into custody, and he now appeared. After being questioned, he pleaded not guilty, but on the strength of Rose Badger's oath, the court decided that "he was Guilty of ye sd fact Laide to his Charge of adultery." Ordered that Sheild (at the next laying of the parish levy) pay 1000 lbs tobacco to the churchwardens.14 On 6 May 1722/23 Delight Sheild petitioned to have Thomas Wayly (an orphan, aged six years last November) bound to him till attaining legal age. Ordered that the churchwardens bind Thomas Wayly to Sheild, who agreed to give him what was directed by law and teach him to read, write and become a house carpenter.15 Delight was named as an appraiser of an estate on 3 April 1723 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that it was ordered that George Cutler, Thomas Burton, Delight Sheild and Richd Sheild, or any three of them, inventory and appraise the estate of John Weily and Thomas Taylor dec'd before the next court.16 On 3 Nov 1725 Capt. Mitchell Scarburgh, attorney for "ye: King," filed a complaint against Delight Sheild for assaulting Wm: Sheild. Ordered that the sheriff summon Delight to appear at the next court to answer the allegations. William was to be summoned to give evidence. On 8 Dec 1725 Capt. Mitchell Scarburgh, attorney for the King, informed the last court that Delight Sheild had assaulted William Sheild. After examining the evidence, the court fined Delight one shilling sterling, costs and fees. He was to remain in custody till posting a bond for good behavior and payment of the fine.17 Delight was named as a guardian on 7 November 1727 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that William James chose his guardian Delight Shield, who posted bond.18 On 6 Mar 1727/28 David James acknowledged his power of attorney to Delight Shield.19 On 9 Jan 1728/29 upon the petition of Delight Shield (guardian of William James, orphan), Nathaniel Savage and his wife were ordered to deliver all of the orphan's estate to Shield.20 He sold land on 3 June 1729 at Accomack Co, VA. Delight Sheild acknowledged his deed for 150 acres (?) to Solomon Whaley. Elizabeth Sheild (wife of Delight) relinquished her rights of dower.21,22 On 30 May 1730 Delight Shield and Rosanna Badger were charged with incontinent living.23 On 8 Jul 1730 the grand jury presented Delight Shield and Rosanna Badger for incontinent living. They were to be taken into custody till posting a bond of £25 sterling to ensure that they would not cohabit with each other in the future.24 On 4 Jan 1731/32 nine-year-old Ruben Rogers and four year-old Peter Rogers (both orphans) were bound to Delight Sheild to learn the trade of house carpenter. (NOTE: They were the sons of Peter and Rachel Rogers.).25 Delight made a will on 16 November 1742 at Accomack Co, VA. To son William Sacker Shield. To son John Shield. To Abel Badger. She was shown as daughter Rebeca Revell in the will of Edward Revell, wife Frances. She was given plantation at Nickawamson containing 500 acres, pewter marked R.R.3 As of circa 1688,her married name was Coleburn.1 She married Robert Coleburn I, son of Col. She was shown as my daughter Rebecca Coleburne in the will of Mrs. Frances Revell who died at the house of Mr. Robert Coleburne.5 Rebecca was named as the executor of a will on 7 June 1698 at Accomack Co, VA. Although not named in her husband's will she was shown at probate as Rebecca Coulburn, widow of Robert, when she qualified to settle his estate..6 As of circa 1699,her married name was Wharton.7 She married Francis Wharton Jr., son of Francis Wharton Sr. and Elizabeth Welburne, circa 1699. Inventory of the Estate of Robert Colbourne states that Rebecca is now the wife of Francis Wharton (Acc Co Wills, 1692-1715, Part 1 p. 481)..7 Rebecca Revell patented land in 1699 at Accomack Co, VA. According to Whitelaw, Edward Revell (wife Frances) lived at tract A52B and in 1687 left his 500 acres to his daughter Rebecca, who married Robert Coleburn, but he did not live long. In 1699 Rebecca Coleburn, widow, discovered a surplus of 100 acres in her land, so she took out a patent for it as a narrow strip along the Jackson part. She gave the 100 acres to her daughter Rebecca, who married Edward Revell II. In 1728 they gave to William Coleburn and in 1752 he (wife Temperance) left to his son Spencer under certain conditions, otherwise it was to go to his son William. The records following are not clear, and it is believed that Spencer retained the land, but in 1778 he died intestate and no record was found of his wife or children. Then in 1788 a Revell Coleburn sold 100 acres which had been left to him by his father (no record found). The buyer was Zorobabel Kellam, whose daughter Sabra married Thomas Coleburn.8 Rebecca died circa 1710.2
