     Alexander was born on 11 August 1750 at Accomack Co, VA.¹ Alexander West built West's Fort in western (now West) Virginia, and probably the most famous of the western Virginia Wests. So much has been written about his activities as an Indian Scout that only a brief summary is given here. Despite his fame, much uncertainty surrounds his private life. Several have written that he was married twice but no record of this first marriage has been found.² He married Malinda 'Linney' Hughes (Hughes?) circa 1780. She was a sister of the famed Jesse Hughes. She was a daughter of Thomas Hughes Senior, who settled on on Elk Creek in (now) Harrison County, West Virginia. He was killed by Indians on Hacker's Creek in 1778. Leaving a daughter Sudna who married Captain William Lowther, another daughter who married Alexander West and 2 sons Elias and Jesse.^3,2 Alexander (351) West married Mary Straley on 19 January 1796.² Alexander died before June 1834 at Lewis Co, WV.¹
