He was shown as brother William Groten in the will of Shadrack Groten. William was named in his father's will on 24 September 1774 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as son William Groten in the will of William Groten, wife Amy.¹ He inherited land in 1774 at tract A35, Pungoteague Creek, Accomack Co, VA. In 1759 Esther Lecatt, wife of Charles, gave a deed of release to William Groten for 102 acres which "he had purchased of Charles Lecatt." The land was at the southeastern or lower end of the tract. In 1774 Groten left to his son William, who 3 years later left to his brother Jonathan. In 1784 Jonathan sold to Thomas Jacob, and 10 years later he resold to Samuel Trader, who was accumulating land in that vicinity.² William made a will on 6 June 1777 at Accomack Co, VA. It was in this year that Rachel (Bagwell) Kellam, widow of Jesse Kellam, placed 170 aces of tract A66 (east of Locustville) in trust with her father-in-law John Kellam. This was for her life, to allow her to bring up her children, and then it was to go to a son, Thomas Bagwell Kellem. In 1808 at her request the land was surveyed as 168 acres, with the notation that it was formerly the land of John Bagwell, supposed to be dec'd. This was the same land that John Bagwell bought from Gertrude Harmanson in 1729. Then in 1747 he sold to William Kellam and 6 years later he and his wife Susanna resold to Thomas Bagwell.
