John was born circa 1724 at Accomack Co, VA. He married (1st_wife) (-----) circa 1745.3 John (173) Kellam inherited land after 1745 at Accomack Co, VA. Whitelaws says no record of the death of Richard Kellam III was noted, but in later years sales of adjacent lands gave the owner of this property as a John Kellam, who died in 1773 leaving a wife Bridget and a son George as heir-at-law. The latter died in 1819 and the next year his land was surveyed for a division among the numerous heirs; his holding totaled 384 acres, including a large part of the land north of the crossroad which had been acquired by him or his fahter. The home and 7 acres went to a Hulton Kellam, who bought up the interests of some of the other heirs. In 1858 a commissioner sold 300 acres of the late Hulton Kellam to Samuel K. Shield and because of his ownership the post office called Shield's later came into being, as well as Shield's Wharf on the creek, which ceased to exist following the demise of the steamboat traffic. After the death of Shield, his large holdings were divided amon his heirs, followed by some inter-family transactions, resulting in Alfred H. Shield becoming the owner of the home place of 115 acres. In 1938 a commissioner sold the property to Francis C. Duer and his wife Billye Atkinson Duer and 2 years later they sold as 122 acres to Lucius J. and Dorothy D. Kellam, thus bringing this land back into the Kellam family once more. Tract A15B is known as Mount Pleasant. A little salt-box-type house burned in 1938. Its age was unknown, but it may have gone back to 1722 when this part of the land was allotted to Richard Kellam III. The present owners have built a substantial moder home nearby.2 He married Bridget (-----) circa 1760 at Accomack Co, VA.4,3 John made a will on 20 November 1772 at Accomack Co, VA. To wife Bridget whole estate during her widow to bring up my younger children, daughters Peggy, Betty & Susey Kellam & son George Kellam. To grandchildren Peggy Budd, Edward Budd & Comfort Budd a bond of their father's, Thomas Budd for 17 £ & interest. Edward Ker & wife Bridget Exrs, Witt: Hillary Green, Solomon Kellam, William "Buddle" Hughes.3 John died on 27 April 1773 at Accomack Co, VA.4,3 Administration of John estate was filed on 30 July 1776 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that John Kellam's estate with will annexed, unadministered by Bridget Kellam, deceased, the late Exec., to William Ward, Edward Ker, the other Exr. named in said will refusing to act. Whitelaw noted that Thomas, wife Abegal, did not mention land in tract A15 because it had been entailed, but he named 4 sons. Whitelaw assumed the first mentioned son Stephen was the oldest and inherited the land in A15 and that the next definite owner of record was a Thomas Kellam, probably a son of Stephen. However it appears more likely that son Peter was the oldest and this Thomas Kellam, son of Peter, was the next owner.3,4 Peter died before 30 March 1763 at Accomack Co, VA.1,5
