Sarah was born circa 1732 at Worcester Co, MD. She married Thomas Marshall, son of John Marshall and Mary Michael, before 1748.2 She married Col. Zadock Purnell, son of Maj. John Purnell and Elizabeth Rackcliffe, circa 1754.2 Whitelaw shows N89 sold in 1750 by David Stott, Sr. to Thomas Marshall. In 1753, Thomas left N89 to his wife, Sarah, and then to daughter, Sarah. In 1765, David Stott's son, John, directed in his will that the land be sold and it was the same 30 acres purchased by Thomas Marshall in 1750. Whitelaw wonders if Thomas' wife Sarah married David Stott or his daughter, Sarah, married David Stott. John Stott was of age at the time of his father's will, as he was executor, and John's mother was still living in 1764, as provisions for the land 'his mother lived on' were made in the sale by his estate. David Stott died in 1758 and his son, John was of age. Thomas Marshall's daughter, Sarah, was born in 1748 and was too young to have been the mother of John Stott. David Stott couldn't have been married to either of these Sarahs. With information available, the only other possibility would be Sarah, the wife of Thomas' grandfather, John. If, indeed, this Sarah was a second wife and much younger, she could well have married David Stott after John Marshall's death in 1720 and been living in 1764. This would explain the land coming back to Stott; however, a closer study of deeds and transactions might clarify. Zadock Purnell's father left his "Genezzer," "Strife," "Mill Angle," and "Penewell's Choice." A picture of "Genesar" can be found in Paul B. Touart's "Along the Seaside" on page 234. Built about 1730, it is situated on the south end of Sinepuxent Neck. Zadock received a portion of this tract which was later distributed to the descendants and heirs of his siblings. From various properties listed in Ruth Dryden's Worcester Land Records, these heirs include: Isaac Ayres, Sewell Turpin, John Bishop, Thomas N. Williams, Samuel Ennis & William Ennis, heirs of Zadock Purnell sold "Burton's Chance" and "Dioce"; John, Elizabeth, Zeporah, Ester, children of Thomas Purnell, sold rights of Uncle Zadock "Genezar;" Boaz Ennis & Mary, Samuel Ennis & Rachel sold right from Zadock; John Bishop, Edward Robins sold rights from Zadock; Zadock Purnell Gibbs of KY sold rights from Zadock; Zadock Marshall & Peggy, Joshua Prideaux, Zeporah P. Fassitt, Sally White, Elizabeth P. Marshall sold rights from Zadock; Walton, Elizabeth & Thomas, of Thomas Purnell, sold rights that Zadock Purnell had as heir to his mother Elizabeth Rackliffe, daughter of Charles Rackliffe. Mary S. Gillis (granddaughter of Zadock's sister, Atlanta), wife of Joseph, was named an heir and joined with her husband to convey her right to Sen. Zadock Purnell in 1807. Zadock served as county clerk in Worcester Co. militia in 1748. Captain by 1767, Lt. Col, Worcester Militia 24th Bn., January 6, 1776. Colonel Sinepuxent Bn., august 30, 1777 to March 23, 1778; resigned due to advanced age. Served in the Lower House of the MD Legislature 1758-1761, 1768-1770, and attended the Maryland Convention in 1775. He signed the Association of the Freemen of Maryland on July 26, 1775. He took the Oath of Allegiance in Worcester Co. in 1778 in Buckingham Hundred before the Hon. Thomas Purnell. Zadock rendered patriotic service by supplying corn for the use of the military on June 14, 1780 and July 10, 1780, and supplying port on September 20, 1781. (Henry C. Peden, Jr., Revolutionary Patriots of Worcester & Somerset Cos. MD, Willow Bend, Westminster, MD, 1999, p. 240-1).3

Thomas was born circa 1727 at Northampton Co, VA. Thomas was named in his father's will on 19 February 1744 at Northampton Co, VA. He was shown as my son Thomas Marshall in the will of John Marshall, wife Mary..1 He married Sarah Marshall, daughter of Isaac Marshall and Sarah Peale, before 1748.2 Whitelaw shows N89 sold in 1750 by David Stott, Sr. to Thomas Marshall. This would explain the land coming back to Stott; however, a closer study of deeds and transactions might clarify.3 He made a will on 20 October 1753 at Northampton Co, VA. Thomas died in November 1753. Thomas's will was probated on 11 December 1753 at Northampton Co, VA.

Robert was born circa 1716 at Northampton Co, VA. Robert was named in his uncle's will on 28 December 1723 at Northampton Co, VA. He was shown as Robert James, son of my brother Thomas, in the will of Francis James, wife Elizabeth.2 In Jan 1733/34 Ann James by her guardian William Smith, complains that her father Thomas James, Gent., died intestate leaving her, his daughter Ann and her brother, his heirs. He was possessed of 2 Negro women named Mary and Betty and one Negro boy named Robin all living. She is advised that she is entitled to one half of the value of the slaves. However, her brother Robert denies that she has any right to the half interest in the slaves. He, being under age, claims he is unable to divide and pay the said Ann her moiety. All are contrary to equity; the said Ann is abiding by the strict rules of the Common Law. The said Robert is called to Court to answer.3 In Dec 1737 Phillip Jacob, planter and Ann his wife and daughter of Thomas James who died intestate in 1726, show that Thomas James died possessed of sundry Negro slaves: Betty, Bob, Mary, Cush and Glasgow. He left 2 children - Robert and your petitioner's wife Ann. The widow Bridget afterwards married a certain William Smith and had administration of Thomas' estate. A distribution was made by the court on her prayer. She was assigned as dower Cush and Glasgow. Moll, daughter of the slave Mary, was born after the said Thomas' death and before the distribution in which she was not considered. Ann, who was then an infant, has received no part of the slave, Moll. Bridget has since died and as heir-at-law Robert James has claimed Cush and Glasgow. He hes refused to make any distribution to his sister Ann Jacob, nor will he give her one moiety of the slave Moll. Robert James is called to answer. He states that he will not give any part of Cush and Glasgow who belong to him as heir-at-law. However, he is agreeable to divide the Negro, Mull.4 He married Ansley Savage, daughter of Nathaniel Savage and Sarah Spiers, circa 1743 at Northampton Co, VA.5,6 Robert witnessed a will on 9 January 1744 at Northampton Co, VA. It was on this date that Daniel Eshon and Robert James witnessed the will of Spencer Johnson, wife Sarah. At probate Robert James renounced his legacies. (NOTE: Since he was not named in the will, he was evidently the husband of Johnson's daughter-in-law (meaning step-daughter) Anzley James who was named in the will.).6 He married Sarah Marshall, daughter of Thomas Marshall and Patience 'V' (-----), on 5 June 1751 at Northampton Co, VA. Jacob Marshall was the security on the M.L.B. of Robert James and Sarah Tilney, widow. Mathew Moor witness..7 He married Elizabeth (50) Christian, daughter of Dr. Michael Christian and Rose (26) Powell, 15 Dec 1753 (bond) at Northampton Co, VA.1,8,7 Robert died before 13 February 1759 at Northampton Co, VA.1,8,9 In May 1759 in N'hamp County Court, Elizabeth James, widow of Robert James petitions in behalf of William, Peggy, Robert, Michael & Bridget James children of the dec'd. The said Robert died intestate leaving several slaves: Glasgow, Cush, Daniel, Joshua, Dido, Abraham and Grace. The plea is for Thomas James, son and heir-at-law to the dec'd Robert to pay the above named children their shares of the slaves. Thomas James, an infant is represented by Nathaniel Savage, his guardian. He agrees to the division, after laying out the dower of the said Elizabeth. Case dismissed for want of prosecution.5
