It was in this year that he was called John Mears, the younger, in the deed in which his parents gave him the Richard Armitrader land. This tract of 150 acres was located north of the present road from Keller to Wachapreague, north of Grangeville and south of Oak Grove Church (Whitelaw, p. 790 and map).. He married Mary 'Molly' Beach, daughter of Joseph Beach and Mary (-----), circa 1762 at Accomack Co, VA. John and Molly Mears lived in the Fair Oaks section of the county on land inherited from his grandfather Richard Armitrader. This homestead was in the same neighborhood as Cottrels Ridge, the home of Joseph Beach, father of Molly..³ John was named in his mother's will on 20 April 1784 at Accomack Co, VA.⁵ He made a will on 17 December 1784 at Accomack Co, VA. To son Richard 100 acres, 300 gallons of cask and one half his still and worm. To son Abel Mears the remainder of my land containing 50 acres and one half his still and worm and 300 gallons of cask. He was shown as under age 18 in his father's will of 1682..^3,4 John was named in his father's will on 16 December 1682 at Accomack Co, VA.³ John Mears lived at the original Mears Plantation on Beaver Dam Branch, southeast of the present town of Keller, VA. His name appeared on Accomack County Tithable list in 1692.⁵ He married Margaret Garrison, daughter of Richard Garrison and Rose Kellam, circa 1692.^1,4 John was named in his mother's will on 28 July 1703 at Accomack Co, VA.⁶ John deeded land as a gift on 1 April 1729 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that John Mears gave to his "beloved" son, George Meras, 50 acres of land on the north side "of the plantation I bought of Major Hitchens (Acc Co Deeds, Wills & Etc., 1715-1729, p. 315). Should son George die without heirs, the land was to revert to his father. On the same day, John Mears gave son John Mears 150 acres "near head of Machipungo Creek upon a place called the beaver dam branch joining up land of John Willis.. He made a will on 14 August 1745 at Accomack Co, VA. To son Thomas plantation where I now live containing 150 acres, reversion to my grandson John Meers, son of John. To son John Meers plantation where he now lives containing 150 acres that my father Bartholomew Meers gave me. To son Mark Meers plantation purchased of Major Hitchens with 50 acres of land adjacent, also 50 acres adjacent it off the tract where I now live. To son Thomas the choice of his guns and the biggest table, and all the corn, wheat, tobacco and cider produced on his plantation the year he died. NOTE: From his will it appears John Mears devised several hundred acres more than he owned. He did not mention son George, who had apparently died since 1729, with his 50 acres reverting back. The land he left son John was apparently the same land he had deeded him in 1729, while the land left son Mark seems to have been only the entire 170 acres purchased of Major Hitchens.

     Margaret was born circa 1674 at Accomack Co, VA.² She married John Mears, son of Bartholomew Mears (I) and Mary (-----), circa 1692.^3,4 Margaret was named in her father's will on 23 February 1709 at Accomack Co, VA. She was shown as a daughter Margaret Mears in the will of Richard Garrison and John Mears witnessed the will..^1,5

     Bartholomew was born circa 1641.¹ The progenitor of the Mears family of the Eastern Shore of Virginia was Bartholomew Mears, who came to Northampton (now Accomack) County by 1655. His name was given as a headright by William Taylor when Taylor was granted 300 acres of land near the head of Occohannock Creek on 11 Mar 1655 (Nugetn, Vol. I, p. 331). Taylor was eligible for 300 acres for having paid the transportation costs to bring 6 persons to the Virginia Colony, Bartholomew Mears being one of them. On 26 Mar 1662 William Taylor and Bartholomew Mears were together granted 500 acres for the transport of 10 persons (Nugent, Vol. I, p. 419). The land was bounded on the east by land of John Evans and "part of the Beaver Dams of Matchipungo Creek" and on the west by lands of the head of Occohannock Creek. On 5 Apr 1666 Bartholomew Mears was granted 300 acres in the same area for the transport fo 6 persons (Nugent, Vol. I, p. 551). On 4 Oct 1668 he and William Taylor divided their 500 acre patent, Taylor being deeded 300 acres by Bartholomew Mears and holding the remaining 200 acres (Acc Co Deeds & Wills, 1664-1671, p. 94). Bartholomew Mears received a new patent on 9 October 1672 for his entire 500 acres (Nugent, Vol. II, p. 119). Whitelaw, p. 749-751 locates this patent as approximately half way between present day Painter and Keller, to the east of US Route 13. The land was crossed by Beaver Dam Branch of Machipungo Creek, which later became known as Otter Dam Branch, before being called Mears Branch, and is shown on present day maps as Frog Stool Branch. On 25 Oct 1679, Bartholomew Mears, planter, bought 355 additional acres from John Cropper of Somerset County, MD for 1600 pounds of tobacco, "the plantation whereon John Kellam now dwelleth at head of Occohannock Creel (Acc Co Wills & Deeds, 1676-1690, p. 167). Whitelaw, p 600, places this land to be west of present day US Route 13, south of Pungoteague. With this purchase Bartholomew Mears owned 855 acres.^2,3
He married Mary (-----) circa 1664. He married before 4 Oct 1668 as the deed he gave to William Taylor on that date was cosigned by his wife, Mary Mears..⁴ Bartholomew was on the list of tithables at Accomack Co, VA, for in 1668. His name was on the Tithable list in 1668 with two tithables and by 1675 had increased to five tithables. After his death in 1682 the name of "widow Mears" was on the list through the year 1691..² On 21 Nov 1671 Bartholomew Mears, aged 30 years, gave a deposition in Acc Co Court as the line between the lands of Edward Harmon and those of Richard Kellam (Acc Co Orders, Wills & c., 1671-1673, p. 32). This would put his birth at 1641 and he would have been only age 14 when he came to Virginia. He would then have been only 21 when he patented the 500 acres with William Taylor in 1662 and age 25 in 1666 when he patented his own land. On 17 Apr 1677 the Acc Co Court ordered that Nathaniel Mason, "servant to Bartholomew Mears," was to serve his master "one year more" (Acc Co Orders, 1677-1678, p. 36) and on 20 Feb 1678 a servant girl of Mears, Margaret Cowley, was judged to be 14 years old (Acc Co Orders, 1677-1678, p. 116). On 17 Dec 1679 Bartholomew Mears was appointed "surveyor of the highways from John Willis to ye extent of the County Southerly upon ye Sea Side" (Acc Co Wills, Deeds & Orders, 1678-1682, p. 147). He made a will on 16 December 1682 at Accomack Co, VA. To godson John Rogers. To Samuel, the son of William Williams. He married before 4 Oct 1668 as the deed he gave to William Taylor on that date was cosigned by his wife, Mary Mears..¹ Mary was named in her husband's will on 16 December 1682 at Accomack Co, VA. She was shown as wife Mary Mears and made Extr of the estate of Bartholomew Mears. She would have been on 34 years old at this time, but did not remarry..² On 17 Nov 1688 Mary Mears gave a deposition stating that her age was about 40 years old (Acc Co Orders, 1682-1697, p. 151). He died a single person without heirs between the will of his father and the will of his mother. His brother John Mears owned the home plantation when he died in 1747 (Whitelaw, p. 751)..²

     Richard was born circa 1672 at Accomack Co, VA. Richard was named in his father's will on 16 December 1682 at Accomack Co, VA.¹ He married Margaret (-----) circa 1700.² Richard was named in his mother's will on 28 July 1703 at Accomack Co, VA.³ Richard sold land on 1 January 1704 at Accomack Co, VA. On 1 Jan 1704 Richard Mears and his wife Margaret sold the 150 acres that he heired from his father to William Savage and seemed to disappear from Acc Co records after that (Acc Co Wills Etc., 1692-1715, part 2, p. 68)..

     Robert was born circa 1674 at Accomack Co, VA. Robert was named in his father's will on 16 December 1682 at Accomack Co, VA.¹ Robert was named in his mother's will on 28 July 1703 at Accomack Co, VA.² On 11 Jan 1707 Robert Mears and wife Anne, of Northampton County, VA, sold 100 acres to Thomas Window Senr. and 100 acres to Thomas Window Junr (Acc Co Wills Etc., 1692-1715, part 2, pp. 254 & 257). After this date he too seemed to disapear from Acc Co records. He married Anne Nottingham, daughter of Richard Nottingham I and Elizabeth Haddon, before 30 May 1709 at Northampton Co, VA. It was on this date that the estate of John Davis was administered to Ann Mears, widow of the dec'd. John Marshall & Luke Johnson were securities. Appraisers were Luke Laylor, Jacob Dewey, George Dewey and John White Sr..^3,4

     Elizabeth was born circa 1665 at Accomack Co, VA. She married George (6) Freshwater, son of George Freshwater Sr. and Elizabeth (3) Bibby, circa 1680.¹ Elizabeth was named in her father's will on 16 December 1682 at Accomack Co, VA. She was shown as daughter Elizabeth, wife of George Freshwater, in the will of Bartholomew Meers..¹ Elizabeth was named in her mother's will on 28 July 1703 at Accomack Co, VA. She was shown only as one of my children Elizabeth in the will of Mary Meers. She didn't show surnames for any of her children. But it does prove that her daughter Elizabeth, who had been mentioned in her husband's will about 20 years earlier, was still alive..³ Elizabeth was named in her husband's will on 26 October 1717 at Northampton Co, VA. She was shown as wife Elizabeth Freshwater in the will of George Freshwater.⁴ Elizabeth made a will before 14 August 1733 at Northampton Co, VA. Her will was undated. To my son George Freshwater. To my son Thomas Freshwater. To my son Mark Freshwater. To my son Matthew Freshwater. To dau. Elizabeth Rascoe 225#t due me from Mr. John Holbrook. To my dau. He married Elizabeth Mears, daughter of Bartholomew Mears (I) and Mary (-----), circa 1680.² George was named in his father's will on 19 March 1687 at Northampton Co, VA. He was shown as son George Freshwater in the will of George Freshwater Sr.³ George made a will on 26 October 1717 at Northampton Co, VA. To my sons George and Thomas Freshwater the land whereon I live and all my land which I have purchased adjoining it, and my island called Holloways Shole, to be eq. div. To my sons Mark and Mathew Freshwater my 200 A. bought of Gorton Hunt to be eq. div. Remaining estate to my wife Elizabeth Freshwater, my son Thomas Freshwater, son Mathew Freshwater, dau. She was shown as a wife Ann in the will of Charles Parkes, blacksmith.² As of 29 March 1697,her married name was Cowdrey.^3,1 She married Thomas Cowdrey, son of Benjamin Cowdrey, on 29 March 1697.^3,1 Anne was named in her husband's will on 25 May 1698 at Northampton Co, VA. She was shown as wife Ann in the will of Thomas Cowdry. He also named brothers-in-law Benjamin & Robert Nottingham to oversee.³ As of circa 1700,her married name was Davis.⁴ She married John Davis circa 1700 at Northampton Co, VA.⁴ She married Robert Mears, son of Bartholomew Mears (I) and Mary (-----), before 30 May 1709 at Northampton Co, VA. It was on this date that the estate of John Davis was administered to Ann Mears, widow of the dec'd. John Marshall & Luke Johnson were securities. Appraisers were Luke Laylor, Jacob Dewey, George Dewey and John White Sr..^5,4 As of 2 July 1709,her married name was Scott.⁶ Anne Nottingham married William Scott I, son of Thomas Scott and (-----) (-----), on 2 July 1709. It was on this date that administration on the estate of Ann Scott was granted to William Kendall, Jr. and Gauton Hunt as marrying Joan and Ann Park, daus. of the dec'd.      Mark was born circa 1705 at Accomack Co, VA.² Mark was named in his father's will on 14 August 1745 at Accomack Co, VA.¹ Mark died in February 1773.³ Administration of Mark's estate was filed on 24 February 1773 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that George Meers was named to settle the estate of Mark Meers. Jonathan Meers & Andrew Meers were the securities.³ According to Whitelaw, when Mark Mears died intestate in 1773 he was succeeded by a George Mears, who in 1795, wife Peggy, left all his land to a son John. In 1798 this son John sold 106 acres by survey to Francis Savage. The bounds mentioned a schoolhouse, which would have been about where the old road turns northwest towards Keller.⁴

     Thomas was born circa 1695 at Accomack Co, VA.² Thomas was named in his grandfather's will on 23 February 1708/9 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as Thomas Mears in the will of Richard Garrison, wife no name.³ He married Peggy (-----) circa 1725.⁴ Thomas was named in his father's will on 14 August 1745 at Accomack Co, VA.¹ He made a will before 28 March 1775 at Accomack Co, VA. His will was not dated. To son Southy Meers plantation where I now live for life, reversion to my grandson Covington Mears. He married Rachel Kellam, daughter of Edward Kellam and Sarah Watson, circa 1725.² Bartholomew bought land on 31 August 1743 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that he bought 60 acres from John Nock for 25 pounds of tobacco (Acc Co Deed & c., 1737-1746, p. 365). His land was located in the area of Gargatha and south of Modest Town. It extended up the highway almost to present day Nelsonia (Whitelaw, p. 1161).. Bartholomew was named in his father's will on 14 August 1745 at Accomack Co, VA. He was named heir-at-law of John Mears, when his father's will was probated, showing he was the oldest son. He was left no land by his father. In 1745 when his father wrote his will, Bartholomew Mears had married and bought land elsewhere..¹ He made a will on 4 July 1761 at Accomack Co, VA. To son Meshack plantation where I now live with the land I bought of John Nock & should he offer to sell same the said land to go to my son Robert Mears. Wife Rachel Mears. Son Shadrick Mears.
