Nicholas (1) Granger

Nicholas was born circa 1610 at London, England. He was shown as age 15 in the Jan-Feb 1624/5 muster..1 On 27 Feb 1618/9 Nicholas Granger was among the 75 boys and 25 wenches listed in the Bridewell Royal Hospital records to go to Virginia. These were children 8 to 16 found running wild in the streets of London, sleeping under stalls and begging, who had bee committed to Bridewell, which served as a house of correction. They were mainly homeless waifs, although some probably were petty pilferers. One of the ships that brought them to Virginia was the George, 150 tons. William Evans, master, which left England in Mar 1618/9 and arrived in Virginia in May 1619. By Feb 1624/5 there were alive in Virginia very few young men who can be identified as Bridwell Boys and of these there are but two, Nicholas Granger and Nathaniel Tatum, from whom descent can be proved.1 On 16 Feb 1623/4 Nicholas Granger is on the list of the living on the Eastern Shore. The muster of Jan-Feb 1624/5 gives, on the Eastern Shore, among the servants of Capt. William Epes, Nicholas Grander, age 15, who came in the George in 1618. His surname appears in early records as Granger, Grainger, Grindger and Gringer.1 He married Elizabeth (-----) circa 1627. Nicholas Granger's wife was probably the Elizabeth Gringer, aged 33 who made a deposition in Mar 1634/5 in N'hamp County..2 On 13 Aug 1638 Alice Robins was reported as saying that if Nicholas Granger had not come to Virginia he would have been hanged; but 9 year olds were not hanged, even in 1619.1 In his will of 1 Apr 1639 Nicholas Harwood remembered goodman Grainger for taking care of him and left funds to buy a cowcalfe for Nicholas Grander, my godson. A certificate for 200 acres, naming his wife Elizabeth as one of the headrights, was given by court to Nicholas Grainger on 3 Aug 1640. On 1 Oct 1647 in N'hamp Co Nicholas Granger deeded a heifer to his daughter Christian Granger. This was witnessed by Henry Armitradinge, who was involed is a similar deed the same day. Those deeds were in contemplation of marriage.1 Nicholas patented land on 20 September 1647 at Northampton Co, VA. It was on this date that Nicholas Grander patented 350 acres in N'hamp Co near the head of Nassawattocks Creek, adjacent to land of Stephen Horsey, but this land apparently was already included in a patent to Col. Francis Yeardley and was lost. He also had another patent for 350 acres on Pungoteague River and Pocomeck Creek which he assigned to Nicholas Waddilow, which is mentioned in a new patent to Waddilow on 2 Apr 1655..1 Nicholas was living on 11 March 1652 at Northampton Co, VA. It was on this date that Nicholas Granger with many others, signed an Engagement concerning the change of government in England. His wife was probably the Elizabeth Gringer, aged 33, who made a depostion in Mar 1634/5..2 Nicholas died after 11 March 1652.2
