John was born on 12 August 1788 at Franktown, N'hamp Co, VA.4,5 According to Rev. John W.A. Elliott's Ledger Book, this John T. Elliott was called generally Jack. He was as enterprising as was his father, but Jack must be educated. A teacher was employed to teach Jack. My father being near his age was taken as his schoolmate for company, but Jack's mind led more to a business life than literature. He did not make that proficiency in his studies as was his opportunity. Thomas Elliott, my father, by far advanced in his studies ahead of Jack. Finally the old man (Jack's father) died, and his son heired the whole estate which consisted of lands, a large neck of land now known as Elliott's Neck. On this site and open to the Bay he built a stately mansion now standing.3 John was named in his grandmother's will on 10 July 1793 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as a grandson John Elliott in the will of Ann Elliott..6 John was named in his grandfather's will on 4 January 1803 at Northampton Co, VA. He was shown as my grandson John Elliott son of Thomas Elliott in the will of John Furbush Turner.
.7 John was named in his father's will on 25 December 1804 at Northampton Co, VA. He was shown as my eldest son John T. Elliott in the will of Thomas Elliott of Northampton County. He was under age 21..2 He married Mary Bagwell Snead, daughter of William (220) Snead and Adah Satchell, on 16 January 1808 at Northampton Co, VA. He was shown as John T. Elliott, minor with consent from L. Upshur, and she was shown as Mary B. Snead, daughter of Adah Snead who gave consent. Major Pettit security..8,9,10 He married Juliet Upshur, daughter of Littleton Upshur I and Ann 'Nancy' (215) Parker, on 22 February 1814 at Northampton Co, VA. Caleb B. Upshur was the security on the M.L.B. of John T. Elliott Juliet Upshur. According to Whitelaw, John T. Elliott's wife was Juliet Upshur, a sister of Judge Abel P. Upshur. For a time Elliott was a business partner of John Upshur of "Brownsville" from whom he bought a large tract of land in N'hamp Co on the bayside. It was located between Nassawadox Creek and Church or Broad Creek, in that area since known as Elliott's Neck. Here he build "Merton" which burned about 1895..1,10 John bought land in 1814 at Northampton Co, VA. In 1814 John T. Elliott bought 85 acres of tract N81 from the exectors of Thomas Jacob, son of Teackle. In 1833 after his intestate death commissioners sold as 82 acres by survey to Thomas C. Mears, and at the time John R. Fisher was living here..11 John was the security on a M.L.B. On 23 October 1814 at Northampton Co, VA. It was on this date that John T. Elliott was security on the M.L.B. of Samuel Poulson & Jenny Bradford..10 John bought land in 1815 at Northampton Co, VA. In 1815 John T. Elliott bought 250 acres of tract N75 near Nassawadox from the estate of Littleton Upshur Sr. Later that same year Elliott and his wife Juliet sold to William M. Upshur as 208 acres by survey..12,13 John bought land in 1816 at Northampton Co, VA. In 1816 John T. Elliott bought a portion of Whitelaw's tract N78 from Henry B. Kendall and his wife, who was Catharine H. Dolby, daughter of Isaac. This part later became merged with tract N79. Also in 1816 John T. Elliott bought a portion of Whitelaw's tract N79 from John Upshur, wife Elizabeth, and so John T. Elliott became possessed of the whole tract. For some years Elliott and Upshur were partners in a mercantile business. According to the Upshur Family in Virginia, 2nd Ed, John T. Elliott was a business partner of John Upshur of Brownsville from whom he bought a large tract of land in Northampton County on the bayside. The property was situated between Nassawadox Creek and Church or Broad Creek, in that area since known as Elliott's Neck. Here he built "Metron" which burned about 1895, a handsome brick house where he and Juliet lived until he died..14 According to Rev. John W.A. Elliott's Ledger Book, he had a large amount of Negro property and 18 hundred pounds in sterling and was said to be the richest man in the County of Northampton or the Eastern Shore of Virginia. After retiring from a business life he settled on his stately mansion as before named and married a high-minded woman without means that led him a miserable life the remainder of his days. He intended to make his wife his only heir and made a will to that effect, but in his last illness being so badly treated went privately to his secretary (his desk), drew from it the will that had been duly executed, and destroyed it, and returned to his chamber unsuspected. Jack Elliott died and the will was searched for, but not found. General inquiry was made, but no will. The disappointment was great by her family.3 John died on 30 December 1823 at Northampton Co, VA, at age 35. John T. Elliott must have died before 12 Feb 1824 when John Elliott Senr sold to George H. Bell for $500 his rights in the estate of John T. Eliott dec'd of Northampton County. This John Elliott Senr. being an uncle to John T. Eliott dec'd. Signed by John "his X mark" Eliott Senr. Witnessed by Thos. Smith of Jonathan, Jonathan Smith & Thos. W. Smith..15,4 His body was interred at Vaucluse, N'hamp Co, VA. Mihalyka's tombstone book shows him as John T. Elliott, 12 Aug 1788 - 30 Dec 1825, but since he was deceased by Feb 1824, his death must have been 30 Dec 1823..4 Administration of John's estate was filed on 12 January 1824 at Northampton Co, VA. It was on this date that Abel P. Upshur was named to settle the estate of John T. Elliott. Juliet Elliott named as widow. The bond was $25,000. Appraisers: Thomas Jacob, John H. Bayly, John H. Harmanson, John Addison & John C. Parramore. According to Rev. John W.A. Elliott's Ledger Book, the settlement of the estate was kept off twenty one years, pillaged, ransacked, and robbed so that the relations got but little.16,3 John was named in a land cause on 29 May 1833 at Northampton Co, VA.17 In 1833 commissioners sold 750 acres of John T. Elliott's land (tract N79) to Thomas R. Joynes after the intestate death of Elliott, and Mrs. Elliott also released to him her dower rights in the 300-acre manor part which had been assigned to her for life. This was the site of Merton, the Elliott home. About 1895 the brick house was burned, and it is traditional that it was quite similar to Chatham (N69A) and that it was erected for Elliott by the same builder, after the latter was finished. Around the homesite has been built up the present village of Bayford. Also in 1833 tract N86, the present Nassawadox crossroad, was surveyed as a part of the real estate holdings of the late John T. Elliott and it contained 220 acres with the notation that it was where George D. White then lived.18
.7 John was named in his father's will on 25 December 1804 at Northampton Co, VA.
