Great John Elliott

M, b. circa 1640
His common name was John. John was born circa 1640. John was named as a headright on 18 October 1664 at Accomack Co, VA. At an Accomack Co, VA, court held on 18 Oct 1664 John Elliot was shown on a headright certificate granted to Capt. John Savage for 4,200 acres for transporting persons into the colony..1 John was named as a headright on 18 September 1666 at Accomack Co, VA. At an Accomack Co, VA, court held on 18 Sep 1666 John Elliot was shown on a headright certificate granted to Henry White for 1,300 acres for transporting persons into the colony..2 John witnessed a will on 21 September 1686 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that John Elliot, William Whittington & William Payne witnessed the will of William Taylor..3 At an Accomack Co, VA, court head on 2 Apr 1688 John Ellot and Joseph Woodland, both accused of stealing hogs, unsuccessfully sued Christopher Tompson and Francis Aires for defamation. After hearing the witnesses, the jury apparently thought that Woodland (described as a little man in a dark coat) and his friend "Great John" Ellot (a tall man with curled hair and a gray coat) really had been up to no good. On a Saturday evening in November 1687, Francis Cook was in a cornfield near a swamp when he heard a dog cry. He "ran home to the house for a gun and so continued running into the swamp by the cry of the hog." When Cook got near enough, he shot at a dog that was harassing the squealing hog. With one of its legs broken, the dog let go and ran into th swamp. Giving chase, Cook then saw Joseph Woodland take the dog and hand him up to John Ellot, who rode off with him. On 29 November, at the funeral of Isaac Dix, the incident was a hot topic of conversation. The mourners concluded that the dog had belonged to Winifred Parker, on whose plantation Ellot lived; her dog had been missing since the Saturday evening in question.4 John was on the list of tithables at Accomack Co, VA, for in 1688. John Elliott (various spelling of Elliott) was on all the Accomack Tithables lists from 1688 to 1695, with 1 tithable each year. In 1688 he was in Capt. Hill's precint, in 1689 in Major Bowman's, in 1690 in Thomas Welburne's, in 1691 & 1692 in Col. Jenifer's, in 1693 precints were no listed, in 1694 in Mr. Ed Custis's and in 1695 in Col. Scarburgh's precint..5 At an Accomack Co, VA, court head on 21 Feb 1692/93 the suit of Capt. Daniel of St. Tho. Jenifer against John Elliot was referred to the next court.6
