Thomas Riley (O'Rily)
M, b. 20 September 1637, d. before 1 June 1697
| Charts | Ancestors of William Taylor White (the Boy in the Iron Coffin) |
Thomas was born on 20 September 1637.1 On 29 September 1660, Thomas Rilly was judged to be 23 years old and ordered to serve his master, Jno. Lewis, for one year beginning on the 20th of September 1660, "according to the custom of the country." As it was customary for a younger servant to serve till his/her 24th birthday (unless there was an indenture specifying otherwise), it seems clear that the court believed 20 September 1660 to be Thomas’s 23rd birthday; assuming they were accurate, his date of birth would have been 20 September 1637.1 On 29 October 1662 just a year after his term of service expired, Thomas Ryley was granted a certificate for 600 acres for transporting twelve individuals. He apparently indentured himself a second time to the same master in order to finance his quest for land.2 Thomas patented land in 1664 at Accomack Co, VA. It was in this year that a patent was granted to Thomas Orily for 600 acres. A few years later Orily sold the eastern half to Roger Ternon, who received a patent in his own name for his 300 acres, and at the same time Orily received a new patent for his remaining 300 acres. The division line between Orily and Ternon went through the persent village of Leemont, which at one time was called Woodstock..3 On 16 Dec 1667, Thomas Riley and Sara Webb, both servants to John Lewis, were presented by the grand jury and summoned to the next court. On the 17th of February, Thomas Ryley was fined 500 lbs tobacco for committing fornication with Sara Webb, who was found guilty of bastardy. Evidently Thomas married the mother of his child once they were free of servitude, and she was the wife Sarah mentioned in his will.4 He married Sarah Webb in 1668 at Accomack Co, VA.5,4 He made a will on 1 August 1696 at Accomack Co, VA. Dennis Morris I1
M, b. circa 1645, d. before 21 February 1692/93
Dennis was born circa 1645. He was named as a headright on 10 November 1663 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as Morris Dennis and Dennis Morris and probably Moore Dennis on a certificate granted to Mr. Edmond Bowman for 1,200 aces for transporting persons in the colony if Virginia.2 He married Elizabeth Sterling, daughter of William Sterling and Elizabeth (-----), circa 1668 at Accomack Co, VA.3 On 8 Apr 1668 in Accomack Court, Denis Morrise, who had long endeavored to "obtain his right" from Capt. Edmund Bowman, was now exposed to the great cost and trouble of a trial at James City. Rather than face certain ruin in the recovery of his rights, he must accept the loss and give Capt. Bowman what he could not afford to defend. Capt. Bowman had declared that he would spend 40,000 lbs tobacco before Morris would have his due. For money, lawyers could be hired for the long and tedious trial, but Morris was poor, and lacking the ability to defend his cause, he must decline his right and wait till God better enabled him or good men relieved his distress by dispensing justice with less trouble and cost than an appeal to James City. Morris could not give security to answer the appeal to the next general court, nor would his entire worth defray the charge. Morris requested his petition be put on record to show he did not decline his due claim from Bowman, but to "prevent his utter ruin, must for the present decline his right."4 Dennis Morris I was on the tax list in 1671 at Accomack Co, VA. Morris Dennis was shown with 3 tiths and Dennis Mores was shown with 1 tith. They were listed next to Timothy Coe and George Johnson on Mr. John Wise's list.5 He bought land in 1672 at Bloxom, Accomack Co, VA. It was in this year that Daniel and Anne Jenifer sold 500 acres to Morris Dennis along the south side of the main head branch of Muddy Creek. He appeared in the records both as Morris Dennis and Dennis Morris.6 He was granted a certificate for land on 7 March 1671/72 at Accomack Co, VA. He was granted 100 acres for transporting John Bisby and Thomas Morris into the colony of Virginia.7 He was on the tax list in 1674 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as Denis Morris with 1 tith on Mr. Jno. Wise's list.8 He bought land on 20 April 1674 at tract A138, Mappsville, Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Nicholas Millechopps, mason, and his wife Mary, for 3500 lbs tobacco, sold to Dennis Morris, planter, 200 acres bordering Thomas Gill in the woods at the northern branch of Muddy Creek. Signed 20 April 1674, Nicholas Millechop and Mary (6) Mellichop. Witnesses: Joseph Newton and John Flacke.9,10 He was on the tax list in 1675 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as Dens Morris with 1 tith on Capt. Rich Hill's list.11 He was on the tax list in 1676 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as Dennis Morris with 1 tith.12 He was on the tax list in 1677. He was shown as Dennis Morris with 1 tith on Capt. Hill's list.13 He deeded land in 1689 at tract A138, Mappsville, Accomack Co, VA. It was in this year that Denes Morris gave to his eldest son John, and in 1715 he and his wife Sarah, now living up in Somerset, sold to Elizabeth Abbott the 200 acres where he had lived when in Accomack.14 He deeded land as a gift in 1690 at tract A126, Bloxom, Accomack Co, VA. It was in this year that Denes Morris left to his grandsons John and Denes, the sons of his son Denes. John was to have the 300-acres wester part, which probably ws the home plantation along the road.15 He was on the tax list in 1691 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as Dennis Morris with 3 tithes on Capt. Wallop's List.16 Dennis died before 21 February 1692/93 at Accomack Co, VA.17

Elizabeth was born circa 1650. As of circa 1668,her married name was Morris.4 She married Dennis Morris I circa 1668 at Accomack Co, VA.4 Elizabeth was named as administrator of an estate on 21 February 1693 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Elizabeth Morris, widow of said Dennis, was named to settle the estate of Dennis Morris. Edward Brotherton was the security.5 O 18 Feb 1695/96 in Accomack Court a warrant was issued by Col. Charles Scarburgh at the complaint of Mr. Robert Pitt, who accused Elizabeth Morris of taking Sterling Newton (son of Joseph Newton, deceased) out of the possession of Pitt. At the last court the boy was ordered to remain with Pitt till this court determined how the "child should be disposed of." In the absence of a constable, Mr. John Custis of Pocomk. was empowered to execute the warrant for the return of the child. At Elizabeth's house he demanded the child, but Elizabeth refused to give up Sterling. It appeared that Elizabeth had committed contempt, so the court ordered that the sheriff take her into custody till she gave security for her good behavior and payment of court charges. (NOTE: Evidently Robert Pitt had married her daughter.).6 On 2 Apr 1701 in Accomack Court on behalf of her sister's children, (the orphans of Joseph Newton, deceased) Elizabeth Morris petitioned against Francis Benston, into whose custody some of the children (with their estates) had been committed. He had given security to deliver the estates when the children arrived at age. This "Benston, in contempt of the said order, failed to do and perform, as also that he detained one of the orphans arrived to woman's estate, being above sixteen years of age, and is thereby kept in very hard servitude. Elizabeth Morris asked that the court take action; they ordered the sheriff to take Benston into custody till he gave bond for his appearance at the next court to answer the complaint.7 On 4 Jun 1701 in Accomack Court Francis Benston was summoned to answer the complaint of Elizabeth Morris, whose sister's children were the orphans of Joseph Newton, deceased. Elizabeth had petitioned that the court placed the children with Benston, who had not given the children their estates, as he had posted bond to do. He had also detained one of the girls, who "was arrived to woman's estates being above sixteen years of age and [Benston had] kept her in very hard servitude." Elizabeth asked that the orphan receive her liberty and her portion of her father's estate. Benston now appeared and alleged that the girl was not yet sixteen and that she was treated well. However, since Elizabeth claimed otherwise, and since Benston "would not permit or suffer ye aforesaid orphan to make her complaint to ye court by detaining her at home," the court ordered that the girl have notice to come to court if she had cause for complaint. The court would "give her such redress therein as shall be agreeable to right and justice."2 She made a will in November 1703 at Accomack Co, VA. She was shown as Elizabeth Morris, widow of Dennis Morris. To sons John, Dennis & Joseph Morris 1 s. each. To daughters Sarah Read & Elizabeth Pitt 1 s. each. Daughter Ann Blake. Daughter Mary Morris - Daughter Ann Blake's youngest son born this present year. Grandau Sarah Read. John was born circa 1668 at Accomack Co, VA. John witnessed a will on 14 February 1685 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that John Morris & John Glading witnessed the will of William Aleworth, wife Dorcas.2 He received land as a gift in 1689 at tract A138, Mappsville, Accomack Co, VA. It was in this year that Denes Morris gave to his eldest son John, and in 1715 he and his wife Sarah, now living up in Somerset, sold to Elizabeth Abbott the 200 acres where he had lived when in Accomack.3 He patented land in 1691 at tract A190, Morris Island, Accomack Co, VA. It contained 300 acres, called a marshy island. It also was in the present Assateague Channel, and was described as near Oyster Creek, which today is Oyster Bay. It became known as Morris Island, which it is still called. In 1695 a patent was issued to Morris Dennis (Dennis Morris) as having been deserted by John Morris. In 1704 Dennis Morris sold to John Custis of Hungars.4 He was on the tax list in 1692 at Accomack Co, VA. It was in this year that Dennis Morris and Jno. Morris were both shown on William Anderson's list with 1 tith each.5 Sheriff Col. John West informed the court that John Morris had concealed two tithables, a white servant and a mulatto servant. Now Morris appeared and proved that he bought his white servant after 10 June. He also produced an assignment (dated 9 July 1696) in which Jonathan Owen sold him the mulatto named Devorax Odriggus. Since both purchases occurred after the time for turning in the lists of tithables, John Morris was not liable for their taxes for the present year. The case was quashed and he was discharged.6 On 3 Mar 1696/97 in Accomack Court upon information presented by the sheriff at the last court an order was passed against Dennis Morris for concealing himself as a tithable in 1696. Morris had claimed that he had paid taxes in Pennsylvania, but he now failed to appear to prove it. Ordered that John Morris, security for Dennis' appearance, pay the fine to John West.7 He married Sarah (-----) circa 1700.8 John Morris bought land in 1703 at tract A130, South Side Messongo Creek, Acc Co, VA. In 1690 Dorcus Aleworth, as Extr of William, sold the balance as 140 acres to John Prettiman; he resold to John Morris in 1703 and in 1714 he sold to Jonathan Aleworth, who thus became possessed of it all except the A129 part.9 John was named in his mother's will in November 1703 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as a son John Morris in the will of Elizabeth Morris, widow of Dennis Morris, and given 1 shilling. He and Robert Pitt were to make division of the estate, but his brother Jacob was named Extr..1 John witnessed a will on 20 July 1711 at Accomack Co, VA.
