Robert Slocomb
M, b. circa 1662, d. before 17 February 1722
Robert was born circa 1662. He married Sarah Riley, daughter of Thomas Riley (O'Rily) and Sarah Webb, circa 1700 at Accomack Co, VA. The fact that Robert Slocomb had a wife Sarah is based on the fact that on 26 Feb 1707/08 Sarah Ryle of Accomack County, widow, for the tender love and affaction I bare for my grandchildren hereafter named, do give as follows: To Thomas Lilliston ... ; To Anne Sloocum, daughter of Robert and Sarah Sloocum ... ; To the next child born of daughter Margaret ....1 On 2 Mar 1707/08 in Accomack County Court, Obedience Pittman presented and acknowledged a lease of land he made to Robert Slokeam.2 Robert received land as a gift on 2 March 1708 at Guilford Creek, Acc Co, VA. It was on this date that Obedience Pitman of Accomack Co, planter, assign & set over to farm let to Robert Slocom for 2,261 lbs tobacco 57 acres of land lying at the head of Gilford Creek being ½ of 115 acres sold by John Townsend of Accomack Co to John Read deceased & bequeathed by him the said Read to John Read his son, bounded by a conveyance from said Townsend bearing the date 5 Jan 1684. I Obedience Pitman do here by bind and obligate my self to warrant & defend the said Robert Slocome in peaceable and quiet possession of the 57 acres during the full term of 19 years all rights, housing, fencing, orchards, pasture or any other profit or convenience thereto belonging for 19 years ... And at what time the 115 acres of land shall be divided that the said Robert Slocom shall have his first choice of the same, all which I the said Obedience Ptiman do confirm with may hand and seal 2 Mar 1707/08. Witnessed by Charles Parker. Acknowledged in Court by Obedience Pitman to Robert Slocom 2 Mar 1707/08 & recorded 30 Mar 1708..3 On 2 Jun 1708 in Accomack County Court, Thomas Simpson (assignee of Robert Slocum) brought action against Richard Jones for 300 lbs tobacco. Although the sheriff had left a note, Jones failed to appear. The court now granted an attachment against Jones' estate for the debt and court costs.4 On 2 Feb 1708/09 in Accomack County Court, Robert Slockum presented and acknowledged an assignment of land he made to James Macoom. (NOTE: Possibly Mason.).5 On 2 Feb 1708/09 in Accomack Co, Robert Slocome signed over all his rights within the mentioned lease unto James MaCome. Witnessed by Morgan Bradshaw and Thomas Riley. Recorded 15 Mar 1708/09.6
On 2 Aug 1710 in Accomack County Court, James and Sarah Lewis had obtained from Capt. Bradhurst (a justice) a warrent against Robert Slocum, who had borrowed their saddle and saddle cloth. After they swore to the itmes, Maj. George Parker gave a judgment ordering Slocum to return the saddle and saddle cloth. Slocum appealed from the judgment to the second day of the court, which debated the matter and confirmed Parker's judgment and ordered Slocum to pay court costs.7 On 6 Sep 1710 in Accomack County Court, the suit of Robert Slocum against George Parker was referred to the next court.8 The following was recorded on 18 Sep 1710 in Accomack County Court, James Lewis complained to John Bradhurst that Robert Slocumb borrowed a new man's saddle from James' wife "in the time of her widdowhood about October last past and that he refused to returne the same." Bradhurst issued a precept to Constable John Barnes, Jr., to arrest Slocumb and bring him before a justice. Signed 17 July 1710 by John Bradhurst. The order was executed by Barnes. On 25 July 1710, Robert Slocum came before Geo. Parker to answer the above complaint; Sarah, the wife of James Lewis, swore that the saddle was her own and that she lent it to Robert Slocum with a saddle cloth. Parker ordered Slocum to return the items. Robert Slocum appealed to the second day of the next court.9 On 6 Dec 1710 in Accomack County Court, Mathias Cope petitioned the court to be paid for serving as a witness for Robert Slocum in his suit against George Parker, Sr. Since Cope swore that he served 5 days, it was ordered that he be paid 200 lbs tobacco and court costs.10 Robert bought land in 1714 at Accomack Co, VA. It was in this year that Robert Slocombe bought 100 acres of Whitelaw's tract A137, near the present town of Mappsville, from Thomas Jester and his wife Sarah of Kent County, Delaware. In his will of 1718 Robert left his land to his son Ryley, but he had another son Thomas, who was the eldest son. In 1743, two years after Robert's estate was finally settled, the two sons united in a deed to William Andrews for the land "where Robert Slocumb the elder formerly lived." Andrews deeded it back to Ryley alone the next year, and in 1747 he sold the 100 acres to Nathaniel Shay. In 1744 Charles Stockley had sold to John Walker an unspecified acreage, which also was unbounded, saying it had been sold to him by Robert and Rebecca Slocomb by a General Court deed..11 On 2 Nov 1714 in Accomack County Court, by virtue of a power of attorney made to him by Thomas Jester and his wife Sarah, Samuell Jester presented and acknowledged both a deed for land Thomas and his wife sold to Robert Slocumb and Sarah's relinquishment of dower.12 On 7 Jun 1715 in Accomack County Court, Benjamin Coe brought an action for 630 lbs tobacco against Robert Slocum, who failed to appear. If he did not appear at the next court, the sheriff would have to abide the award of the court.13 On 5 Jul 1715 in Accomack County Court, regarding the action for 630 lbs tobacco, Sloumb, who asked that the case be delayed till the next court, presented as his special bail Mr. Edward Robins, who would have to answer for the debt and cost if Slocum lost.14 On 6 Sep 1715 in Accomack County Court, in the action Benjamin Coe brought against Robert Slocumb at the June court had been continued from time to time; now Slocumb failed to appear. At the request of Coe's attorney, judgment would be affirmed against Slocum (and Mr. Edward Robins, his bail) if he failed to appear at the next court.15 On 4 Oct 1715 in Accomack County Court, regarding the Benjamin Coe action against Robert Slocumb. Continued from time to time, the action was now called: Mr. Kempe (attorney for Slocumb) asked that auditors be appointed to audit the accounts between the two parties. Coe chose Mr. Henry Bagwell as auditor, and Slocumb selected Mr. Henry Custis. Ordered that these tow men go over the accounts and report to the next court.16 On 6 Dec 1715 in Accomack County Court, Robert Slocumb's chosen auditor, Mr. Henry Custis, "was afflicted wth sickness," so the audit was not complete. The court continued the former order, with a report to be made at the next court.17 On 3 Jan 1715/16 in Accomack County Court, Slocumb failed to appear; further, the auditors reported that though Coe appeared on the appointed day, Slocumb did not. Ordered that if Slocumb did not appear at the next court, judgment would be granted against him.18 On 6 Mar 1715/16 in Accomack County Court, regarding the Benjamin Coe action for 630 lbs tobacco against Robert Slocumb, who alleged no discount. Ordered that he immediately pay the debt and the costs of the suit.19 On 6 Nov 1717 in Accomack County Court, John Hutchinson went before John Boadhurst (a justice) and complained that he was "in fear of his life or sum bodyly harm to be don unto him" at the hands of Robert Slocumb. Bound to keep the peace and appear at this court, Slocumb now appeared, but no one came to allege anything against him. Ordered that he pay court costs and be discharged.20 He made a will on 6 March 1719 at Accomack Co, VA. Brother (meaning brother-in-law) Thomas Ryley Exr. Eldest son Thomas Slocomb. Youngest son Ryley Slocomb my land. After payment of debts balance of estate to be divided between all my children. Richard Grinalds to keep my daughter Sarah untll she is 16. Francis Young to have the care of my son Bennitt until he is 21. Witt: Thomas Ryley, Richard Sanders, Edward Brotherton. (NOTE: Was Thomas Ryley a half-brother or brother-in-law?).21 Robert died before 17 February 1722. He must have been dead by this date, as Thomas Riley's will of this date named a cousin Ryley Slocomb (Robert's son) who was to have a years schooling when he arrives to age 15..22 Administration of Robert's estate was filed on 7 April 1724 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Robert Slocomb's estate was administered to his son & heir Thomas Slocomb. Mason Abbott & John Wilkins were securities. (Note: Robert had named his brother Thomas Riley as his Exec in his will of 1718, but Riley died before he could settle his brother's estate and named a cousin Ryley Slocomb (under age 15) in his will, written in 1721 and probated in 1724. By this time Robert's eldest son and heir-at-law Thomas Slocomb had come of age and so his father's unsettled estate was administerd to him.) It was ordered that John Johnson, John Tankard, William Nicholson and Roger Abbott (or any three of them) inventory and appraise the estate of Robt. Slocomb and report to the next court.23,24 On 8 Jul 1724 in Accomack County Court, Thomas Slocomb (administrator of the estate of his father, Robt. Slocomb, deceased) petitioned that during his lifetime his father left different goods and chattels in the hands of Tho. Lucas, Nathaniel Howard, George Middleton and Sarah Riley (widow and executrix of Tho. Riley), all of whom now refused to deliver the items to Slocomb. Ordered that the sherriff summon the above persons to the next court to show why they did not deliver the goods in question.25 Between 25 Feb 1735/36 and 24 Mar 1735/36 in the vincinty of Chesconessex, the line between William Hudson & the heirs of Robert Slocome were processioned by Joseph Bell and about 15 others.26 Robert's will was probated on 24 February 1741 at Accomack Co, VA.21

| Marriage* | He married Sarah Riley, daughter of Thomas Riley (O'Rily) and Sarah Webb, circa 1700 at Accomack Co, VA. The fact that Robert Slocomb had a wife Sarah is based on the fact that on 26 Feb 1707/08 Sarah Ryle of Accomack County, widow, for the tender love and affaction I bare for my grandchildren hereafter named, do give as follows: To Thomas Lilliston ... ; To Anne Sloocum, daughter of Robert and Sarah Sloocum ... ; To the next child born of daughter Margaret ....1 |

Thomas was born circa 1702 at Accomack Co, VA. Thomas was named in his father's will on 6 March 1719 at Accomack Co, VA. He was named as my eldest son Thomas Slocomb in the will of Robert Slocomb..1 Thomas was named as administrator of an estate on 7 April 1724 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Robert Slocomb's estate was administered to his son & heir Thomas Slocomb. Mason Abbott & John Wilkins were securities. (Note: Robert had named his brother Thomas Riley as his Exec in his will of 1718, but Thomas Riley died before he could settle his brother's estate and named a cousin Ryley Slocomb (under age 15) in his will, written in 1721 and probated in 1724. The assumption is that by this time Robert's eldest son and heir-at-law Thomas Slocomb had come of age and so his father's unsettled estate was administerd to him.).2 On 8 Jul 1724 in Accomack County Court, Thomas Slocomb (administrator of the estate of his father, Robt. Ordered that the sherriff summon the above persons to the next court to show why they did not deliver the goods in question.3 On 21 Mar 1727 in Accomack County, William Taylor, Joshua Taylor, Thos: Slocomb, Richard Townsend and Jno Mathews processioned the lands from Solomon Ewells Mill to Gingoteague Creek from the Sea Side to Wallops Road. This included the lines between Joshua Taylor & Wm. Taylor, and between Wm. Taylor & Eliz. Preson, and between Preson & James Wishart, and between James Wishart & William Whittington.4 Thomas sold land in February 1743 at Accomack Co, VA. In his will of 1718 Robert left his land to his son Ryley, but he had another son Thomas, who was the eldest son. In 1743, two years after Robert's estate was finally settled, the two sons united in a deed to William Andrews for the land "where Robert Slocumb the elder formerly lived," Whitelaw, p. 1220/1221. More specifically: On 29 Feb 1743 William Andrews of Acc Co bought from Thomas Slocomb and Riley Slocomb for 15 pounds Virginia currancy a certain tract of land containing 100 acres in Acc Co near the head of Messongo Branch being the land and plantation where Robert Slocomb the elder lived and held. Signed by Thomas & Riley Slocomb, their seal, in the presence of William Arbuckle, George Douglas and Robert Slocomb..5,6

In his will of 1718 Robert left his land to his son Ryley, but he had another son Thomas, who was the eldest son. In 1743, two years after Robert's estate was finally settled, the two sons united in a deed to William Andrews for the land "where Robert Slocumb the elder formerly lived." (Note: The fact that they referred to it as the land wher "Robert Slocomb the elder" lived implied that there was a younger Robert Slocomb, who was evidently not named in his father's will. This would have been the Robert and wife Rebecca Slocomb that sold part of this land to Charles Stockley before 1744.). Robert was born circa 1710 at Accomack Co, VA. About Mar 1735/36 in the vincinty of Chincoteague Branch, the following boundary lines were observed in the presence of Wm. Watts, William Taylor, John Blake, Samuel Taylor and Lemuel Kendall: The line between Charles Taylor and John Blake beginning at a Black Walnut tree being a corner tree in the line betwee Lemuel Kendall and John Blake and from thence by a line of marked trees into Jengoteague Branch and from the said Walnut tree by a line of marked trees to a red oak that stands in the line of Robert Slocomb and from the Oak by a line of marked trees to Jengoteague Branch done in the presents of John Kendall, William Taylor, Charles Taylor, John Wallop, John Blake, Jonathan Owen, Wm. Watts and Lemuel Kendall. There was no line found between John Blake and Robert Slocomb from the water till we came to a red Oake that made the corner tree of Charles Taylor. The line between William Watts and Robert Slocomb beginning at a Hickory tree near the marsh at the Sea Side and then by a line of marked trees to a red Oake which tree is a corner tree between the said Watts, Samuel Taylor and Scarburgh Tunell, Samuel Taylor line running from said Oake by a line of marked trees between said Taylor and Robert Slocomb into Jengoteague Branch and the line between Scarburgh Tunell and William Watts running from the said Oak by a line of marked trees till it intersets William Ewels line.2 Robert witnessed a will on 12 March 1738 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Robert Slocomb, along with George Douglas, John Wallop and William Rowley, witnessed the will of John Kendall..3 Robert witnessed a will on 13 October 1739 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Robert Slocomb, along with Lemuel Kendall and Esther Miles, witnessed the will of Thomas Tyre..4 About Mar 1739/40 in the vincinty of Chincoteague Branch, the following boundary lines were observed/processioned in the presence of, among others, John Wallop, John Blake, Lemuel Kendall, John Walker, William Watts, Scarburgh Tunnell and Rolland (Robert?) Slocomb: The line between William Finney and Lemuel Kendall beginning at a Cedar Stake in the Marsh at the Sea Side & from thence by a line of marked trees to Jingoteague Branch. The line between Capt John Walker and John Blake beginning at a Walnut tree being a corner tree between said Kendal and said Blake and from thence up a line of marked trees into Jingoteague Branch & from the aforesaid walnut tree by a line of marked trees to a red Oak that stands in the line of Roland (Robert?) Slocomb & from the said Oak by a line of marked trees to Jingoteague Branch. No line found between John Blake and Roland (Robert?) Slocomb from the water till we come to a red Oak that made the corner tree of John Wlaker. The line between William Watts and Roland (Robert?) Slocomb beginning at a Hickory tree near the marsh at the Sea Side and then by a line of marked trees to a red Oak which tree is a corner tree between Thomas Watts, Samuel Taylor & Scarburgh Tunnell; Samuel Taylors line running from said Oak by a line of marked trees between said Taylor & Rolland Slocomb in Jingoteague Branch and the line between Scarburgh Tunnell & William Watts running from the aforesaid by a line of marked trees till it intersects William Ewells line done in the presence of the above named people.5 He married Rebecca Blake, daughter of John Blake, circa 1740. The fact that this Robert Slocomb had a wife Rebecca is based on the 1744 sale of land, within Whitelaw's tract A137 (near Mappsville), from Charles Stockley to John Walker saying it had been sold to him by Robert & Rebecca Slocomb..1 On 30 Jun 1741 John Watts' estate was administered to John Goutee. Robert Slocomb and Elias Taylor were securities.6 Robert sold land before 1744 at Mappsville, Acc Co, VA. In 1744 Charles Stockley had sold to John Walker an unspecified acreage, which also was unbounded, saying it had been sold to him by Robert and Rebecca Slocomb..7 It was on this date that Robert Slocomb witnessed a land sale from Thomas & Riley Slocomb to William Andrews for 100 acres where Robert Slocomb the Elder lived and held.8 Robert bought land in 1743 at Worcester Co, MD. It was in this year that Robert Slocomb bought Winter Pasture..9 About Mar 1743/44 in the vincinty of Chincoteague Branch, the following boundary lines were observed/processioned in the presence of those as stated below: The line between Lamuel Kendal and John Blake beginning at the Sea Side and Running near a ditch to a red oak a corner tree and from thence into a branch and so up the Branch and then by a line of marked trees to Jngotague Branch, done in the presence of the above persons. The line between John Walker and John Blake beginning at a black walnut and from thence a line of marked trees into Jngotague Branch and from the above said Walnut tree by a line of marked trees to a red oak that stands in the line of Robert Slocomb and from the said oak by a line of marked trees to Jngotague Branch, done in the presence of the above persons. No line found between John Blake and Robert Slocomb from the Water till we came to a red oak that made the corner tree of John Walker; the between William Watts and Robert Slocomb beginning at a hickory tree near the marsh at the Sea Side and then by a line of marked trees to a red oak which tree is a corner tree between the said Watts, John Walker and Scarburgh Tunnell; John Walkers line running from the said oak by a line of marked trees said Walker and Robert Slocomb into Jngotague Branch; and the line between Scarburgh Tunall and William Watts running from the aforesaid oak be a line of marked trees till it intercepts William Ewells line, don in the presence of the above persons.10 In 1747/48 in the vincinty of Chincoteague Branch, the following boundary lines were observed/processioned in the presence of those as stated below: The line between Lemuel Kendall & John Blake beginning at the Sea Side & running near a ditch to a red oak a corner tree and from thence into a branch & so up the Branch & then by a line of marked trees to Jngotague Branch. The line between John Walker & John Blake beginning at a black walnut tree being a corner tree in ye line between said Kendall & said Blake & from thence by a line of marked trees into Jngotague Branch & from the aforesaid walnut tree by a line of marked trees to a red oak that stands in the line of Robert Slocomb from the water till we came to a red oak that made the corner tree of John Walker. The line between John Watts & Robert Slocomb beginning at a hickory tree near the mark at the Sea Side and then a line of marked trees to a Red Oak which is a corner tree between said Watts and John Walker and Scarburgh Tunnel. John Walker's line running from the said Oak by a line of marked trees, said Walker & Robert Slocomb into Jngotague Branch. The line between Scarburgh Tunnell & John Watts running from the aforesaid Oak by a line of marked trees till it intercepts William Ewells line. The line between John Watts and William Ewell being a mulberry tree near the water on the Sea Side.11 On 18 Mar 1748/49, Robert Slocomb of Acc Co, VA, taylor, for 12 pounds current money of Virginia, mortaged to George Douglas of the same place, the following: one walnut desk, two oval tables, the largest of maple and the smallest of walnut, four feather beds, two rugs, one blue and on green, and all the blankets and shoots to the above bed, five poutor dishes, six soup plates, and all other poutor now the property of Robert, six cyder hoggs heads, two young steers, four cows and one yearling. The said cattle, except the yearling are not yet marked with the proper mark of the said Robert, to wit: both ears croped and one slit in the right ear. George Douglas was to only use these items until Robert or his heirs delivered the 12 pounds with interest. After one year this would be considered a sale. It was signed by Robert Slocomb, S.S., in the pressence of John Pardise, Littleton Dennis and Tabitha Douglas Junior and presented in court on 31 May 1749. (NOTE: The "S.S." after his signature stands for Sea Side, implying there was another Robert Slocomb in Acc Co, probably on the Bay Side. Another possibility is that since his father had lived on the Bay Side at the head of Guilford Creek, that he had always used the "S.S." to distinguish himself from this father and continued to use it after his father's death.).12 The 4 processioners returns of 1735/36, 1739/40, 1743/44 and 1747/48, naming Robert Slocomb and one of his neighbors John Blake, are evidently of the same track of land as the descriptions are very similiar and all mentioning Jingoteague Creek. According to Whitelaw (p 1334) Jingoteague or Gingoteague Creek, is now called Mosquito Creek, alongside the southern branch of which was located the millpond which was first called Wallop's and then Watt's millpond. This combined with the fact that in 1741 Robert Slomcomb was security John Watts' estate, surely puts Rober Slocomb living on part of Whitelaw's track A174, which is just south and east of the present day Wattsville directly on the Sea Side. According to Whitelaw (p 1333/1) a William Blake purchased part of this track in 1686 from a William Turville of Somerset Co, MD. Whitelaw further states that in 1688 this land passed from William Blake to his sons William and John and another part went to a William Kenet and later to the son John Blake, who in 1726 left land to his adopted grandson John Blake, who was a son of Charles Blake, alias Price, deceased, and son of Mary, the daughter of Charles Ratcliffe of Somerset Co, MD. This adopted grandson John Blake, who died in 1761, was evidently the John Blake named in the above processioners returns between 1735 and 1748.13,14
Family | Rebecca Blake b. c 1695 |
| Marriage* | He married Rebecca Blake, daughter of John Blake, circa 1740. The fact that this Robert Slocomb had a wife Rebecca is based on the 1744 sale of land, within Whitelaw's tract A137 (near Mappsville), from Charles Stockley to John Walker saying it had been sold to him by Robert & Rebecca Slocomb..1 |
