Joshua was born circa 1755 at Accomack Co, VA. Joshua Thornton was under age 14 in 1761 when a guardian was named and over age 14 in 1769 when he chose a guardian. This puts his birth at about 1755..2 He married Mary 'Molly' Wessells, daughter of William Wessells Sr. and Egnatia 'Nasha' (-----), circa 1785. Joshua witnessed a will on 24 April 1795 at Accomack Co, VA. Both before and after the turn of the century (1800), a Joshua Thornton was shown by surveys and bounds of adjacent lands to have been the owner, so he may have been the son of the last William. In describing the owership of tract A146 (between Temperanceville, Oak Hall and Atlantic), Whitelaw indicates that in 1748 James & Hannah Wishart sold 73 acres to William Thornton Jr. A disposition by Thornton was not noted, but about 1800, a Joshua Thornton was the owner..5 He made a will on 8 January 1805 at Accomack Co, VA. To son James Thornton 75 acres adjoining James Taylor, Selby Delastatius & John Wharton & if he dies without issue, then to son David Thornton. Sarah was born circa 1710 at Accomack Co, VA. She married Nathaniel Tunnell, son of Nathaniel Tunnell and Mary (-----), circa 1725.2 Sarah Vernelson (Vernelson?) sold land on 3 September 1734 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Nathaniel Tunnell and Edmund Tunnell acknowledged their deed for land to Scarburgh Tunnell. Sarah and Susanna Tunnell (the wives of Nathaniel and Edmund) relinquished their rights of dower.3 Sarah was named in her husband's will on 5 April 1739 at Accomack Co, VA. She was shown as wife Sarah in the will of Nathaniel Tunnell..2 Sarah was named as an heir on 15 December 1742 at Accomack Co, VA. She was shown as Sarah Tunnel in the will of Guzaline Vanelson, the younger, and shown as Sarah Tunnell, widow, devisee of the testator at probate when she qualified to settle his estate. (NOTE: She may have been his sister.).1 She married William Thornton (I), son of Edward Thornton (I) and Patience (-----), circa 1743. In describing the ownership of tract A140, land between Mappsville and Temperanceville, Whitelaw notes that after Nathaniel Tunnell died in 1739, his wife Sarah married William Thornton. In 1754 there was an involved land suit against William and Sarah Thornton, who were in possession of part of this tract. It resulted in a General Court deed from Woodman Stockley III to Sarah and William Thronton in trust for her son William Tunnell. The title was transferred to William Thornton Jr. (Whitelaw indicates that he was a son of Sarah and William Thornton, but he was probably older than Sarah's son William Tunnell, as so was William Thornton Sr.'s son before he married Sarah) during the life of Sarah and then it was to go to his step-brother, William Tunnell, who finally in 1778 (wife Mary) left to his son Nathaniel..4,5 Sarah was named in her husband's will on 14 November 1758 at Accomack Co, VA. She was shown as wife Sarah in the will of William Thornton..4

James was born circa 1696 at Accomack Co, VA. He married Bridget Collins, daughter of John Collins, circa 1720. James was named as administrator of an estate on 4 October 1732 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that James Thornton was named to settle the estate of John Collins..2 James bought land on 13 July 1736 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that James Thornton bought 600 acres for 1500 lbs of Tobacco from Samuel Taylor and wife Jeminia. The land began at the mouth of Gingoteague Inlet, which marsh and hammocks are commonly called Samuel Taylor's Island, alias William's Island. The deed states that the sale included houses, buildings, orchards, fences, woods, etc. The location of this land sounds like it was near where Jonathan Thornton was living in 1732. Even if it cannot be exactly located today, the purchase of island land near Wallops Neck indicates that the Thorntons of Chincoteague Island were of this line..3 James sold land on 25 January 1740 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that James Thornton, planter, sold to Thomas Townsend, son of Henry, for 5 lbs, 300 acres of "marshy lands lying and being in the aforesaid county near Jingoteague Inlet commonly called and known by the name of Samuel Taylor's Marsh." (Acc Co Deeds 1737-45, p. 205). This sale left James Thornton still owning 300 acres at the time of his death..1 He made a will on 20 November 1741 at Accomack Co, VA. To son John Thornton. Nothing more has been found on the youngest children of this James Thornton, but it appears to have been his second oldest son James who settled on Chincoteague Island..4

James was born circa 1725 at Accomack Co, VA. James was named in his father's will on 20 November 1741 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as a son James Thornton in the will of James Thornton..1 Since his older brother John inherited their father's land near Chincoteague Inlet, James would have had to set up a household elsewhere and probably became a waterman and Chincoteague Island became his home. James bought land on 26 March 1783 at Chincoteague, Acc Co, VA. It was on this date that this James Thornton first appears in Accomack County records, when he bought, from Peggy Gillet of St. George's Parish, 42 acres for 21 £, "a tract of land and marsh on Chincoteague Island..2 James was on the list of tithables at Accomack Co, VA, for in 1783. The Personal Property Tax shows 9 Thorntons men as heads of households and subject to tax. James Thornton and Wm. Thornton Senr (father and son) were listed together with a Jacob Taylor immediately under their names. A Jacob Taylor was known to have been living on Chincoteague Island by this time. A John Thornton was listed near by.. On 24 Jun 1799 James Thornton Senr. was ordered by the Acc Co Court to be tax free and again on 28 Jun 1802, James Thornton of Gingoteague Island, was to be tax fee.3,4 James was listed as a head of household in the census of in 1800 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as James Thornton (DON?), over age 45 with 1 male under age 10, 1 female age 10-16, and 2 females over age 45. The was no James Thornton listed in the 1810 census so he may have been living with one of his children..5 An Indenture made between the Overseers of the Poor and James Thornton to carry out an order made in County Court dated 25 October 1802 to bind Thos Russell orphan of Joshua Russell until the age of 21, unto James Thornton who will provide sufficient meat, drink, washing, lodging, and wearing apparel, teach him reading, writing and arithmetic, the trade of a farmer and also pay him $12 at the expiration of the said time.6
The name of James Thornton appears among the names of Chincoteague Island men on 26 Apr 1813 when votes were counted for Thomas M. Bayly for the US Congress (Acc Co Deeds 1812-15, p. 113). Others who voted for Bayly were Michael Read, John Birch, James Jester, Arthur Whealton, Wm. Sharpley, Joseph Sharpley, John Jones, Crippen Booth, David Jones & Joshua Whealton.7 James died after 1813. Since this is the last time his name appears in the records, it is safe to assume that James Thornton Senr. died soon after 1813 as a very old man. He left no will and there was no administration found of his estate. The names of his heirs can therefore only be determined accurately by finding what happened to the 42 acres of land he bought on Chincoteague in 1783 from Peggy Gillet, which he did not sell by a court deed. It is possible that James Thornton Senr. had, besides the son William Thornton, a son John Thornton, born about 1750. He would have married about 1770 and would have been the John Thornton (of James?) in the 1800 census, about age 45, with another male in the household over age 45 (his father James?). This John could have been the father of Jonathan Thornton, b.c. 1771, who married first in 1791 Mary Owen and secondly in 1806 Sally Ross and the father of Kendall Thornton, b.c. 1775 who married in 1796 Betsy Read and d.c. 1824 and was living on Wallops Island, under age 26 in the 1800 census and again on Wallops Island in the 1810 census..

William was born circa 1746 at Accomack Co, VA. This William Thornton Senr. was evidently the eldest son of James Thornton Senr. since he apparently inherited his father land. He would have been b.c. 1746 and could have married as early as 1766 or as late as 1785 as his children were born in the late 1780's..1 It was without doubt he who brought a law suit against William Burch on 28 Sep 1784 for trespass, assault and battery.2 There is no record of this William Thronton buying or selling land, but in 1832, when his son John Thornton sold land on Chincoteague, it was bordered on the East & Southeast by William Thornton's heirs. William died in March 1812 at Chincoteague, Acc Co, VA.3 Administration of William's estate was filed on 30 March 1812 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that James White was named to settle the estate of William Thornton. Bagwell Wharton & David Watts were the securities. On 1 Oct 1812 there was an order to audit the estate of William Thornton (Island) and James White was the administrator. John Jones, William Rowley, Charles Ewell and Thomas T. Taylor were named to appraise his estate. The auditors were Bagwell Wharton & Thomas T. Taylor. The audit was recorded on 27 Jun 1814. The list of men to whom various fees had been paid by the estate included: William Daizy, James Conner, Ocra Brainney, Thomas Hancock, Charles Carpenter, John Jones & William Sharpley.3
