Joshua Perkins was a member of Captain Windsor Brown's Virginia Company of troops when Brown advertised in the 6 June 1777 issue of the Virginia Gazette that he had deserted. Brown described him as: a mulatto, about 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, 24 or 25 years old, and is a straight made fellow; had on a short striped jacket, a felt hat bound round with French lace (Virginia Gazette, Purdie edition, p. 3, col. 3). (NOTE: This seems to be an Amry unit and the Joshua Perkins of Accomack was a seaman in the Navy.).1 Joshua's heirs were named on 29 May 1834 at Accomack Co, VA. Sally Perkins is the only heir at law of Joshua Perkins, seaman in the the Virginia Navy in the Rev. War.4

Nimrod was born circa 1755 at Accomack Co, VA.1 He was bound out on 28 August 1765. He was bound as an apprentice shoemaker to William Sacker James in Accomack County on 28 August 1765 (Orders 1764-65, 489). He was taxable in Accomack County in 1785 and 1790 (PPTL, 1782-1814, frames 154, 347), a "Mulatto" taxable in Northampton County in 1787 and 1788 (PPTL, 1782-1823, frames 74, 81).1 He served in the Revolutionary War between 1777 and 1781. On 31 July 1832 Nimrod Perkins states he enlisted as a drummer on board the Diligence Galley in the Virginia Navy in the Rev. War in 1777 and continued on board until she was laid up in 1781, and that he was on board and in the service more than three years. When he entered, Johannas Watson was captain, Richard Paker was 1st lieut. and Jesse Canon 2nd lieut. He was born in Accomack Co; was a resident of the county when he enlisted and when he was discharged. He received a Virginia Military Land Warrent for 100 acres and scrip for the same for said service.2,3 Nimrod was listed as a head of household in the census of 1800 at Accomack Parish, Acc Co, VA. He was shown as Nimrod Purkins a head of household. There was 1 free white female, age 16-26, and 2 Free Negroes, so he must have been one of the Free Negroes.4 He died before 24 September 1849 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that administration on the estate of Nimrod Perkins was granted to William Nock with Thomas Paramore, Zadock Nock & Peter D. Corbin securities.5
