     The names of four men, who could have been brothers or a father with three sons, appear in the list of headrights given by David Williamson, when he was granted a patent for 6000 acres in Accomack County on 16 February 1666 (Deeds & Wills 1663 - 1666, p. 115). They were William Marfson, Edward (Edmund) Mafson, John Mafon, and Richard Mafsons. Although each of their last names were spelled slightly different, there seems little doubt but that they were all Masons. The land that David Williamson patented in 1666 was bound on the north by Crooked Creek (present-day Bullbegger Creek) and on the south by Messongo Creek (Nugent I, p. 554). It was near the land William Mason's son bought in 1713. William was born circa 1644. He married Sarah Bennett, daughter of Thomas Bennett and Elizabeth (-----), circa 1685. On 27 September 1692, William Mason gave a deposition in Accomack County Court, in which his age was given as 48 years "or thereabout", showing he was born circa 1644 (Orders 1690 - 1697, p. 42). He would have been 22 years of age when his name was listed as a headright in 1666. It is likely he had married when his name first appeared on the Accomack County list of tithables in 1681 (Acco. Co. Tithables (Tax List) 1663 - 1695, p. 27). While no record has been found as proof, it appears his wife and the mother of his children was Sarah Bennet. Thomas Crippen, who died testate in 1735, had a daughter who had married Thomas Bennet (Deeds & Wills 1729 - 1737, p. 411). The Crippen name appeared many times in the settling of the estates of the Kegotank Masons, indicating some family relation. Thomas Bennet was a headright for Edmund Scarburgh in 1664 (Certificates and Rights, p. 15). He could have had a daughter, Sarah Bennet, who married William Mason, in addition to the son who married Elizabeth Crippen. William was living on 28 November 1695 at Pungoteague Creek, Acc Co, VA. William Mason was a ship carpenter, who was living near Pungoteague Creek on 28 November 1695. This is shown by a document he had recorded on that date, stating he had paid John Revell "a valuable consideration" to move a shallop he had built "on a Plantation in the woods near Pungoteague and having no way whereby to convey and Carry down the Said Shallop from the place where it is built to ye water side to Launch but over the land of Mr. John Revell". The boat was built for Col. Charles Scarburgh (Wills & C Orders 1682 - 1697, p. 270).. William sold land on 6 May 1707 at Accomack Co, VA. On 6 May 1707, Edmund and wife Elizabeth Scarburgh sold 121 acres to William, Mason for 4000 pounds of tobacco and cask (Wills & Etc. 1692 - 1715, part II, p. 235). This land was at "ye head of Little Matompkin alias Burton Branch" and was inland from Pungoteague Creek.. William died in 1710. William Mason and wife Sarah had both died intestate when the administration of their estates was granted to their son, William Mason, on 1 August 1710 (Orders 1710 - 1714, p. 7)..¹ Administration of William's estate was filed on 1 August 1710 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that William Mason was named to settle the estates of his parents William & Sarah Mason. On 21 August 1710, the inventory and appraisal of "aIl ye Estate of William and Sarah Mason brought before us" was presented by John Warrington and John Wylie, two of the appraisers, and recorded (Wills & Etc. 1692-1715, part III, p. l). Besides the known son, William Mason, and one daughter, other children of William and Sarah Mason can only be deduced. The fact that William Mason could have had brothers nearby complicates this. The name of Richard Mason does not appear after he was named as a headright in 1666. Edmund Mason got in trouble with the law in 1706 for "keeping an unlawfull Tipling house" (Orders 1703-1709, p. 83a). After this date, his name does not appear in the records. John Mason was listed as a tithable in 1692,1693,1694 and in 1695 (Acco. Co. Tithables (Tax List) 1663-1695, pp. 54, 55, 58 and 61). No record of his death has been found. Taking these facts, and the prevalence of similar given names, into consideration, the next generation of Masons in Accomack County are deemed to be the children of William Mason and his wife Sarah.

     Sarah was born circa 1667. She married William Mason circa 1685. Sarah died in 1710.¹ Administration of Sarah's estate was filed on 1 August 1710 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that William Mason was named to settle the estates of his parents William & Sarah Mason.¹

     Thomas was born circa 1646 at England. He was named as a headright on 17 November 1664 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as Tho. Bennet on a certificate granted to Col. Edm. Scarburgh for 7,950 acres for transporting persons into the colony.¹ He married Elizabeth (-----) circa 1666. There is no specific proof of a marriage between this Thomas Bennett and Mrs. Elizabeth Bennett, but they were the only two Bennetts in the records of Accomack County of this period. There is also no specific proof that they were the parents of Sarah and Thomas, but again they were the only two Bennetts in the records of this period.²

     William was born circa 1685 at Accomack Co, VA. William witnessed a will on 15 April 1707 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Henry Read, William Mason and John Washbourne were witnesses to the will of Thomas Middleton, wife Elenor..¹ He married Eleanor 'Ellen' Satchell, daughter of William Satchell and (-----) (-----), circa 1708. William Mason's wife Eleanor was apparently the widow and second wife of Thomas Middleton, who died testate in 1708, naming his "now wife Eleanor". (Wills 1692-1715, p. 442). William Mason was a witness to the will. William and Eleanor were married by 1713, from a deed of that year.. William inherited land in 1710 at Accomack Co, VA. This William Mason inherited his father's land, which he exchanged with John Collins on 4 May 1713 for land elsewhere (Wills & Etc. 1692-1715, part III, p. 123). He and wife Eleanor sold the new land to Richard Rodgers on 10 October 1713 (p. 153). On the same date, William Mason (carpenter) bought 200 acres on the north side of Messongo Creek from Thomas Preeson for 10,000 pounds tobacco and cash (p. 166).. On 2 October 1716, they reported "ye Rebackah Lister Servt woman by Indenture bound to them Absented herself by runing away" (Orders 1714-1717, p. 24). He made a will on 12 February 1758 at Accomack Co, VA. He left 200 acres on the south side of Messongo Creek to his oldest son, Middleton Mason, "where he now lives". He left 100 acres, bought of Ann Drummond, to son William Mason "where he now lives". He left 450 acres, purchased of Solomon Ewell, to son John Mason. William Mason left his son, Bennet Mason, 200 acres "where I now live" (north side of Messongo Creek). He named daughters as Ann Pilchor, Hannah Major, Susanna Andrews, and Eleanor Howard. He left his wife, Eleanor Mason, half his home plantation for her lifetime. He left a slave to William Mason, son of son John "if he comes to live in this county". He named another grandson as Daniel Mason and left property to grandson Ismael Mason/Andrews. Wife and son Bennet were the residual legatees & Extrs. William Beavans, Ephraim Waggaman & Henry Fletcher were to appraise the estate. Witt: John Milligan, Daniel Howard and Lewis Biswick. Besides those named in his will, William Mason had two other children. Ede Mason wrote her will on 17 May 1748 (Wills 1745-1749, p. 469). Her will was witnessed by brothers Middleton Mason, Bennet Mason, and Zorobable Mason. Zorobable was deceased by 29 November 1748, when the will was recorded (Orders 1744-1753, p. 295)..² William died in November 1759.² William's will was probated on 28 November 1759 at Accomack Co, VA. Middleton Mason was named the heir at law, implying that he was the oldest son. Of William and Eleanor's four sons, only Bennet Mason appears to have left descendants in the Messongo area..²

     Katherine was born circa 1687 at Accomack Co, VA. Thomas Webb, planter, made a gift of a cow, "with a calf by her side" and a heifer to his goddaughter, Katherine Mason, "daughter of William Mason, carpenter" on 18 September 1688 (Wills &. Deeds 1678-1690, p. 481).

     Bennett was born circa 1695 at Accomack Co, VA. He married Bridget Bagwell circa 1720. Bennet Mason's wife Bridget was likely a Bagwell. She was apparently the mother of his older children and it is likely he married a second time after her death. He named no wife in his will..¹ Bennett bought land on 7 May 1728 at Accomack Co, VA. The name of Bennet Mason first appears in Accomack County records on 7 May 1728, when he bought 100 acres of land from William Huse (Hughes) for 3250 pence.      Abraham was born circa 1690 at Accomack Co, VA. He was the plaintiff in a law suit against an unknown person on 6 October 1719 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Abraham Mason brought a suit against James Conner's estate (Orders 1719-1724, p. 8).. Abraham was on the list of tithables at Somerset Co, MD, for in 1723. Abraham Mason's name appears on the Somerset County, Maryland, tax lists for 1723 and 1724..

     Edmund was born in August 1710 at Accomack Co, VA. Edmund was an apprentice on 2 March 1725 at Accomack Co, VA. Edmund Mason, orphan "who will be 15 years of age next August", was bound out to Sabastain Delastatius, Junr on 2 March 1725, "to learn to read and Right and the Art of a wheel Right". This Edmund Mason apparently moved into Worcester County. He sold personal property there on 9 January 1746 (Wor. Co. Deeds A, P 469).

     Eleanor was born circa 1675 at Northampton Co, VA. Eleanor was named in her father's will on 27 January 1679 at Northampton Co, VA. She was shown as my youngest daughter Ellen Satchell in the will of William Satchell. Marshall added a note at the end of the will saying she married Thomas Middleton.¹ She inherited land in 1680 at tract N52, Matchipungo, N'hamp Co, VA. It was in this year that William Satchell left his 300 acres as follows: 100 acres each to his son John, and daughters Grace and Ellen, John received the land on the north side of the branch. Daughter Ellen Satchell married Thomas Middleton and they exchanged her 100 acres with John Cole for 125 acres of tract A91.² She married Thomas Middleton circa 1705.³ Eleanor was named in her husband's will on 15 April 1707 at Accomack Co, VA. She was shown as my now wife Elenor, who had a daughter Mary Mary Middleton in the will of Thomas Middleton. William Mason was one of the witnesses to the will..³ She married William Mason, son of William Mason and Sarah Bennett, circa 1708. William Mason's wife Eleanor was apparently the widow and second wife of Thomas Middleton, who died testate in 1708, naming his "now wife Eleanor". (Wills 1692-1715, p. 442). William Mason was a witness to the will. William and Eleanor were married by 1713, from a deed of that year.. Eleanor was named in her husband's will on 12 February 1758 at Accomack Co, VA.⁴ Eleanor died in April 1760.⁵ Administration of Eleanor's estate was filed on 29 April 1760 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Middleton Mason was named to settle her estate. Littleton Armitrader was the security.⁵

     Thomas was born circa 1650 at Accomack Co, VA. He married Eleanor 'Ellen' Satchell, daughter of William Satchell and (-----) (-----), circa 1705.¹ He made a will on 15 April 1707 at Accomack Co, VA. To eldest son Daniel Middleton 70 acres, being part of land purchased of William Sill. To son-in-law Thomas Budd & Anna Danela, his now wife, part of th above land. To 3 youngest sons, Thoms, John & Gabriell balance of said land. To daughter Mary Middleton by my now wife Elenor. Wife Extr. Witt: Henry Read, William Mason, John Washbourne..¹ Thomas died in May 1708.¹ Thomas's will was probated on 1 June 1708 at Accomack Co, VA.¹
