Betsey Bonwell, daughter of Betsey, married McKeel Wise and is now his widow..¹ Elizabeth died after 1850 at Baltimore, MD. In 1850 Elizabeth was found to be residing in Baltimore City, MD. Sometime between 1810 and 1823 parts or all of Elizabeth's family migrated to Baltimore. The first record was of her son, McKeel T., who was married in Baltimore in 1823. While it is not known if the family moved together or separately, Elizabeth is found living with her son McKeel, sister-in-law Matilda and daughter Elizabeth in the 1850 Census. She died after 1850 in Baltimore, MD. Elizabeth was widowed at a relatively young age of 31. On 26 Jun 1809, she was named to settle the estate of "McKeely" Wise. John Joynes, Clement Bonewell & William S. Watson were the securities. There was a deed between John E. Wise and "the children of McKeel Wise, decd." 7 children were named in this deed. In the settlement of estate of "McKeely" Wise, there is a line item for the payment of the balance of that deed. This confirms that these 7 children were the children of McKeel Wise and Elizabeth "Betty" Bonwell..⁷

     McKeel was born in 1755 at Accomack Co, VA.² Could he be John McKeel Wise, the same as John Wise, the son of Tully Robinson Wise and Tabitha Douglas? He did name children Tully R. Wise and Tabitha Wise and Tully R. Wise was involved in settling his estate. McKeel was the security on a M.L.B. On 5 June 1785 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that Kelly Wise was the security on the M.L.B. of Edmund Chambers & Mary Wise..³ McKeel bought land on 20 January 1794 at Onancock, Acc Co, VA. It was on this date that Thomas Boniwell & wife Nancy sold to Keley Wise for 40 pounds, they confirmed unto Mckiel Wise, 6 acres & ¾ bounded on the East & Northeast by William Gibb, North by the road leading from Onancock Town to Drummond Town, West by a pine standing in the fork of the aforesaid road, South by a road leading from Onancock Town to the Sea Side, unto him the said McKiel Wise. He was shown as McKeel Wise in the will of George West and was to pay $20 for my 1/2 of the schooner that we have in partnership, & that he have 1/2, & if he refuses my 1/2 to be sold by my Extrs..⁵ He married Elizabeth 'Betsey' Bonnewell, daughter of James Bonnewell and Betsey 'Betty' Bonnewell, circa 1796.⁶ He resided and owned land in Onancock, Accomack, Virginia, USA. While McKeel had residence in Onancock, there is an entry in the settlement of McKeel's estate, which indicates that he likely had business interests and perhaps a residence in Baltimore, MD. McKeel was involved in the shipping business and was in a partnership with George West and was the co-owner of a schooner. McKeel was given the opportunity to buy out George's share at the time of George's death. Apparently, McKeel did not opt to do this, as it was shown in the settlement of McKeel's estate that his estate was paid for his half of the schooner "Eliza". A Bible was passed down from McKeel to his descendants. This Bible exists to this day and contains many pages of details involving his ancestors. Primarily, it lists the family of his widow, Elizabeth "Betty" Bonwell. As this Bible became her possession after his death, it is likely that she penned the names of her family into this Bible. Later generations continued this tradition and placed other items of note, such as family lists, drawings and Mass cards.¹
